Franklin had a profound presser after losing to OSU in 2018 when he stated that PSU had "gone from an average football team, to a good football team to a great football team - but we're not an elite football team...yet." Now, after five years, having had athletes like Barkley, Dotson, and Micah Parsons, I can't help but feel enormous pain and hurt for the entire Penn State fan base who have respectfully given him ample time to get there. He can't just deflect to the OC... he has to own that the program is back to good, not great. Penn State fans, I feel your pain.

Two 4th down conversions got the 1st TD. Without those risks it’s likely a quieter even worse loss 14-6 or more as MI had 2 straight TD drives. Those risks included not wanting to give the ball back to a hot offense - which this drive cooled substantially. 2nd go for 2 was - we get this - you’re reeling - and next time it’s 2 for the win. (Three passes from the 3 - probably at least one run called for-but you can’t get both risk and conservative).

But the reason why they ran it 32 times was because they weren’t concerned about our offense. All they had to do was burn the clock and win in field position. Remember too that both second half scores came off of turnovers-a fumble and turn over on downs. So for the most part, they did stop them.

I'm a Michigan fan. I don't know that Franklin got outcoached necessarily, his 2pt conversion decisions were definitely questionable, but this was bigs on bigs, and Michigan's bigs were just better. PSU has the 2nd best defense in the B1G and the 2nd or 3rd best offense. Not sure why there's such a sky is falling attitude there.
The margins are thin in these matchups. Penn St loses due to trash coaching more often than not. Franklin has outlived his utility at State College. His coaching, when it’s a talent equated field, goes against Penn St. That makes all the difference in the final outcome. We can beat around the bush all we want but the real problem is Franklin. He did his job making us go from 7-5 to 10-2 (B10 being absolutely trash also played its part) but to beat OSU and UM, you can’t coach the way you did this year. It’s not a criticism of him but his playcalling. It was absolutely putrid. Penn St deserves better than that.
1 Love how CJF represents the program off the field, also done great things for off the field wins for the program. But is not warranting his of his elite/make a difference - pay level for on the field. 2 Current contract = he’s not going anywhere, anyone asking for it can please just stop… complete waste of time and breath. 3 Coordinators do matter, just ask Dabo Swinney or Lincoln Riley. Head coaches can impact coordinators. Can’t picture CJF telling Manny how to scheme a game, but does anyone really think CJF didn’t have a direct impact on the offensive game planning for OSU & Mich? 4 Inability to adjust in game is not just the coordinators, also a fundamental issue with head coach. What did we get from the Ken Whisenhunt experiment? 5 Completely understand the stay on schedule premise. But IMO, the “stay on schedule blinders” (and the play calling that has gone with that on this team) had become more of a limiting and inhibiting factor in calling a game. Particularly against good teams that we don’t have the ability to make up ground again on if we get behind (thank you defense for keeping us in games, although not totally without fault in Mich game in 2nd half adjustments).

Also Keandre lambert smith is the number 1 target he was the number 3 WR last year . Those guys were never replaced production wise. One more thing I miss a dual threat QB I feel in college and now NFL it’s a huge advantage have someone that can run and avoid sacks by extending the play. This is easy to say (I’ve said it myself) but realistically, who are you going to hire in his place that be a sure thing? Look at all of the programs who’ve done exactly that, made some huge new hire, only to end up in complete disappointment and/or disaster? The wrong hire could very easily backfire, set the program back a decade from a recruiting standpoint, and for what? Don’t get me wrong, these two losses were not only absolutely avoidable and terribly embarrassing, but at the end of the day, he’s likely to go 10-2, with his only losses to the 1st and 3rd ranked teams in the nation; both of which games we were expected to lose. You also need to consider the fact that those two programs spend FAR more on their programs, have much better facilities, and far more developed NIL collectives (both are top 15 while we aren’t even top 20), which can be the difference maker in landing a Marvin Harrison Jr vs KeAndre Lambert-Smith. It’s easy for boosters and fans to knee jerk react by pulling back on financial support of the program, but that’s only going to set the program back more (and make a contract buyout much more difficult if things need to go that direction). Yes, the losses were so much worse than they should have been - both were inexcusable - but again, who are you hiring as a sure bet that can come in, keep recruiting at the level it has been, and then beat the two best teams in the nation? That’s a very short list, with most on that list already working for top tier programs. I understand the sentiment and want them to get over the hump more than anyone, but the grass isn’t always greener. Just my $.02…

People r nuts to think Penn state will get a better coach then Franklin. He’s 10-15 IMO. So where’s the top 5-10 coach we’re getting? Yurcich absolutely should be fired. Also Keandre lambert smith is the number 1 target he was the number 3 WR last year . Those guys were never replaced production wise. One more thing I miss a dual threat QB I feel in college and now NFL it’s a huge advantage have someone that can run and avoid sacks by extending the play. Drew is very slow he needs to run north and south.
This is easy to say (I’ve said it myself) but realistically, who are you going to hire in his place that be a sure thing? Look at all of the programs who’ve done exactly that, made some huge new hire, only to end up in complete disappointment and/or disaster? The wrong hire could very easily backfire, set the program back a decade from a recruiting standpoint, and for what? Don’t get me wrong, these two losses were not only absolutely avoidable and terribly embarrassing, but at the end of the day, he’s likely to go 10-2, with his only losses to the 1st and 3rd ranked teams in the nation; both of which games we were expected to lose. You also need to consider the fact that those two programs spend FAR more on their programs, have much better facilities, and far more developed NIL collectives (both are top 15 while we aren’t even top 20), which can be the difference maker in landing a Marvin Harrison Jr vs KeAndre Lambert-Smith. It’s easy for boosters and fans to knee jerk react by pulling back on financial support of the program, but that’s only going to set the program back more (and make a contract buyout much more difficult if things need to go that direction). Yes, the losses were so much worse than they should have been - both were inexcusable - but again, who are you hiring as a sure bet that can come in, keep recruiting at the level it has been, and then beat the two best teams in the nation? That’s a very short list, with most on that list already working for top tier programs. I understand the sentiment and want them to get over the hump more than anyone, but the grass isn’t always greener. Just my $.02…
@@andrewheater3550you might be right about there not being a better option. But the program's progress has clearly saturated at 2nd tier under franklin. It's been long enough to conclude that he is simply not a title contender.
I frankly think he proved that way back in 2017-2018 when he blew two consecutive chances to make the playoff by blowing 4th quarter leads to OSU then losing to a shitty MSU team in both years. but w/e
I am not impressed with him. I about spit my drink out when he started listing the wins and losses in game stats after losing the Michigan game. There's only one stat that matters - SCOREBOARD. This guy is a CLOWN!

calling for franklin to be fired is ridiculous - yeah it stinks to lose the best but please, this program has very bright future. Moreover, he's putting people into the NFL and winning a lot of football games. Penn State would have won the big ten west every year for the last million if Penn state was on that side. The Big Ten East is the best of the best in the country and while Penn State isn't King of the Hill, they are outstanding.

I’ve said this time and time again. When you coach to not lose, you’ll almost always get beaten by a coach playing to win. The reason Ohio State and Michigan are undefeated is they play every game to win. Meanwhile we play big games to not lose.
With Franklin, Penn State will get the six wins needed to qualify for a bowl game every year. They'll never make the college football playoff, especially if they have to go through the Ohio States and Michigans of the world.
