  • Peter Brukner OAM, MBBS, FACSP, FACSM, FASMF, FFSEM is a specialist sports and exercise physician and the founding partner at the Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre in Melbourne. Peter is a world renowned sports medicine clinician and researcher. He has recently been Head of Sports Medicine and Sports Science at Liverpool Football Club as well as team doctor for the Australian cricket team.
    Peter is also Associate Professor in Sports Medicine at the Center for Health, Exercise and Sports Medicine at the University of Melbourne. He has served two terms as President of the Australian College of Sports Physicians during which time he was instrumental in the establishment of a specialist level training program in Australia for sports medicine physicians. Peter was the first Australian to be elected to the Board of the American College of Sports Medicine.
    Dr. Brukner is also the co-founder of the public health campaign SugarByHalf and is committed to the challenge of improving the nation’s health with improved diet and increased physical activity.     I came out, as a “low carber” last winter. I was 223.5 lbs, exercising a lot. Was still gaining weight and feeling unwell. About to turn 53, no energy, blood work not bad, but borderline. Decided to cut bread and sugar, added more beef, bacon and eggs, along with avocado and more veggies. Pretty much most of what he is talking about, I went through. In 5 months, I lost 63 lbs, and find it easy to maintain my weight since hitting goal weight 4 months ago. Bloodwork, vital signs, fitness and sense of well being vastly improved and still improving.
    Low Carb is the better way of life.
    Apparently, I am now the “go to” guy at work for questions regarding fat loss and health and fitness.Funny, I work in healthcare.

      enrico branchetti 60-100 mg of carbs, sometimes less, sometimes more. Cholesterol was borderline, along with AC1, they have been excellent as of April, Thyroid med almost cut in half. No rebound weight gain. Vital signs are excellent.

    I’m 77. My youngest child was born in 1972. I put on a lot of weight and lost 14 kilos on the Atkins diet which was controversial at the time. A visit to the doctor 9 months later he was so impressed with how well I looked and the weight I’ lost. I proudly told him about my Atkins diet. He told me how dangerous that diet was, the Atkins was a quack doctor etc etc. I went back to eating normally because I didn’t want to die from heart disease. I struggled with my weight for many years until I found the LCHF lifestyle.

      Are story’s match. I came back to low carb when I was sick enough at 71 years old and now at 75 I’m not sick at all. Feel great and call myself a “ metabolic super power “ .

    Thank you all for the presentations. I am a Female 73 lchf five years down 60 lbs, never look back, but still upset with the medical field big pharm and government for the the years of lying to us. I had to discover and undertake low carb high healthy fat on my own. Thank goodness for U tube with programs like this so We can learn how to live a lchf life and live longer healthier. Most physicians don’t know about this life path to good health.

    Last year my HbA1c was a pre-diabetic 6.1 then early this year rose to a diabetic 6.7 but after 3 months of following low carb and no fructose diet with a bit of intermittent fasting (basically skipping breakfast) my HbA1c is as of last week down to a non-diabetic 5.2 my liver values are also brilliant (ALT went from 65 to 38, basically no longer fatty liver). All other bloods really good. This diet really works. Oh and I also lost 16 kg in 3 months.

      I started keto 2 years ago when 69 and now no longer diabetic. An 84-year-old friend started doing just a few of these things and uses hardly any insulin anymore and is off statins. My 54-year-old wife lost 85 pounds. More importantly, much healthier. It isn't difficult to do and it's never too late.

      I'm over 70 and have the same wish, although I could go back 10 years more. I am ketogenic but am worried that I may have waited too long. I have severe edema and have had at least 2 CVEs. Because of the heart failure, I have become much more strict about being in nutritional ketosis. I figure that I just need to stay the course and see if there is any improvement or not. I already know it (the diet) sure won't hurt anything.

    it's strange that diet advice and even politics seem to be treated as religion today. Evidence that opposes a point of view is vilified. This is a very good talk with evidence and recognition of other points of view and approaches.

      Although this is a great video, I am not sure it's a good idea to show to school students. Firstly we need them to not think too polarized, second they may view things too black and white. This is not a physics equation. This is highly complicated and political, we want to keep young minds innocent and ot political and not polarised and not fill them with too much emotions against the actions of industries until they are older. When such a hard message hit children, they may have difficulties processing it.

    This is so heavy on me..
    I am on carnivore, (or trying to be)... Obviously this is not pop news sp everyone was just in shock, and some were backhanded critical which is fine..
    I wish my aunts would get on some form of a low carb.
    All 3 are overweight and whether diagnosed or not, are diabetic and obviously hyperinsulinemic smh..
    I wonder if my generation will wake up. I just wana stay healthy and alive long enough until they realise whats happening and change.

    It's amazing how much we've been brainwashed into believing fat is bad for you but sugar is wonderful. It's also amazing we've been led to believe we need to eat multiple times a day. Even my dad and his wife who are in their mid fifties come to believe this BS. But I have started to ask them, how many fat kids did you see when you were growing up? At the very least it makes them think.

    Hello great information about our sad health care providers that I already had a good idea of what they are mostly consisted of... But I've been doing a moderate ketogenic diet for the last month and a half,I started after listen to Dr. Eric Berg ,and there is a little if not a lot more food to live on and constantly live on for a long time without being hungry all the time. Also at the same time I after listening to his video about intermittent fasting aswelll I got on that too.i just needed to say that. Like steak,bacon ,pork chops, rice,eggs (which I usually boil) salt pepper ,homemade salad dressing, bay leaf tea with cinnamon and ginger root .
    Now I only eat two meals a day ,with the odd day I go with just one.and instead of low carb I'm going NO Carb until I clear up my eczema that also along with ackey joints and bad back sore muscles.i am gonna make an attempt to cut all unnatural sugars and sweeteners out of my life for good. I don't have a house scale,and I'm not interested in the number watch Anyway to much ,although it will be nice to get on after another month of this to see what is going on...now I know I started at around 235 pounds. I'm 6 foot male I know that I should be around 185....so thanks for your information, it will help me push on my way to a healthier lifestyle and stay away from the Drs.;) and I'd like to add I'm from and live in Canada, its not any better here. I have heard in the last 5 years on Facebook or TH-cam, I'll need to try and find the video I watched about a female Dr. I believe she was from Germany this was in the 50s she came out with a cure for cancers, and a lot of it was staying away from processed foods ,and the store bought salad dressings... she also said that staying away from fish oils omega 3s was a good plan. Instead she suggested organic flax seed oil ,the fresher the better and cottage cheese and something like home made milk. I tried that for a while ,even though I have my cancer contained like it should be. You see we all have so called cancer,aids,the works...it's our lovely immune system that keeps it all in check. Anyway,if someone knows of this Drs. Name that would be great for you to let me know so I can have a listen to her again. Thanks!

    😹We do have a moderate amount of arsenic - at least in the USA. It is given to chickens in the feed to kill parasites + help them gain weight. Maybe used for other things - haven’t researched that.

    So I’m having a situation. I have an auto immune disease that affects my hands and makes things very painful and hard to function. It seems that when I eat more simple carbs and sugar and essentially junk food, my symptoms clear up. When I try to go lower carb and incorporate more meat vegetables and nuts into my diet, my symptoms seem to flare. I’m suspecting it’s the nuts which really bums me out because to me they are the perfect portable and non-perishable snack that really keeps me full. I like meat and eggs but I don’t like to eat them constantly, and Fruits and vegetables are good but they are harder to carry around as snacks and involve more shopping and cooking, and finally they just don’t seem to satisfy me no matter how much fiber they have. Some easy portable and non-perishable low-carb snacks would be appreciated :-(
    Edit: Almonds and peanuts are not the problem I think, but perhaps certain other nuts, I’m just not sure. It’s not easy for me to do an elimination diet because my flareups are sometimes very delayed and don’t happen very often but when they do they are awful. Sometimes I can go months or even a year without a flareup so this would make elimination diet hard to pinpoint. Maybe I need some sort of food sensitivity test to know for sure

      I would recommend looking into AIP (autoimmune protocol). It will give you guidelines regarding which foods (nuts, eggs, nightshade vegetables) are more likely to increase inflammation for you. There is lots of good information and recipes out there. The Paleo Mom website might be a good place to start. She tends to have a good scientific reason for any advice she gives, and plenty of information freely available on her website. Lots of blogs and podcasts out there too.

      Because some of us are Insulin resistant and type 2 or at least approaching type 2 diabetes..We simply cannot assimilate Carbs=sugar into our system... Our blood glucose soars as does our insulin secretions...Some folks, particularly the young, although not always for them either but their metabolism is able to cope...I submit for your consideration that won't last...I used to be able to eat anything, buckets of candy etc, but alas, the abuse of ones pancrease/liver will catch up.....

      Arsenic is just a pure natural element. While it is a poison in large amounts it has been known to be used for some reasons in small amounts. ( although for the life of me I can't imagine what and can't remember what I've read about it).

      Same here, except that I'd call my results preposterous. I started it just to shed a little weight but it ended up fixing... well, pretty much everything, and I had quite a few issues that needed fixing. I never understood why quitting meth made me _less healthy_ but, as it turns out, it was just because I'd "fast" for days while on a good, old fashioned meth binge, from which I'd usually recover in a day or two anyway.

    Half the carbohydrate in coca cola, honey, and table sugar isn't "just glucose"; it's fructose, which goes straight to liver and gives you NAFLD.

      To my knowledge no research has even demonstrated that fructose can contribute to NAFLD in the absence of overfeeding. If you can provide a source to back up this claim I'll be very impressed. Research comparing overfeeding fructose and overfeeding saturated fats find that saturated fats cause greater fat deposition in the liver than fructose. This is a terrible argument against fructose.

      Green Deane I was in high school from 1977-1981. There were two fat students, although by today's standards they were just overweight, not nearly obese.

      I was in grade school during the same period with one fat student. During that same period my dad worked for Wonder Bread Hostess Cake and there was never a shortage of bread and sugar products at home. Remember the slogan, "Builds strong bodies 12 ways"? We all bought into Wonder Bread's lies and I ate a ton of that crap all washed down with 16 ounce bottles of Pepsi with real sugar. It's no wonder that I had poor sleep habits.
      That all led to "wheat belly" and my 6th grade basketball coach recommending to me that I "skip the potatoes at dinner time".
      I carried that wheat belly all my life. It didn't matter what I did. I tried all the various diets and nothing worked. I even got into cycling and rode 30,000 miles and never lost the belly. It wasn't until I tried the carnivore diet that things clicked and the belly shrunk.
      Ancel Keys's remains should be exhumed, shot in the forehead, and shoved down a garbage disposal.

      Yes but that was when the rate of sudden heart attacks peaked. So actually the high fat, high cholesterol, high sugar diet was a complete disaster. The rate took off after WW2. Despite having very little obesity people had extensive diseased arteries. Vegetable oils were not even used until late 70's/80's.

    I did low carb with success 26 years ago and quit when the migraines STOPPED. Well now 4 years ago I had refatted and got type 2 and immediately realized low carb was for me, I didn’t take the medicine and 4 months later the Dr. checked up on. Me and said Donald your Type 2 is not present and your sugar is correct, (what did you do) I said short story is I stopped feeding me sugar , Sugar. 😎she quit talking to me. Feeling good 👍

    Last Feb 2020 my GP told me my HbA1C was 13. He gave me a script , went home and did my research. I found out my number was extremely dangerous. After 4 months doing LCHF ( keto ) and did intermittent fasting 18:6 beside daily 4-9 kmwalk Or 30 min threadmill if the weather was bad , now my Hb A1C is 4.6. 🙂🙂
    I Committed to continue what Iam doing and can’t wait for my next HbA1C blood work.
    Yes, I take tablespoon of Extra virgin olive oil /lemon with a pinch of sea salt on empty stomach in the morning. Iam 64 years old.

      I’m about to start the keto way of eating because I’ve noticed that eating carbs leaves me achy all over with no energy. I’m curious about the spoon full of olive oil in the morning? I’ve never heard of that before.

      It is an energy source. If not yet fat adapted ( not able to dig into one's own fat stores); ingesting oil can keep one satisfied for longer into the morning, after fasting during the night. It also serves to cleanse, by stimulating bile excretion. (Listen for example to John Doulliard's soft cleanse protocol - advised to be done from time to time - not on a constant basis).
      Had been taking OO regularly myself - in the morning and evenings, but then realised it probably is not a good idea, since it's preventing me from losing more weight.

    By the way, the label he shows at 49:35 that's full of unpronounceable ingredients, about 40+ of them... that label is from baby formula in case you were wondering. That's what the label looks like on the garbage they're feeding to babies. It's just soy, corn, some oil and sugar, and a bunch of synthetic vitamins.
    This is why the mother (as long as we're not talking about an adoptive mother, they obviously don't have any option to breastfeed) needs to be eating a good diet so she can actually breastfeed for longer than a couple months.
    I almost lost my milk supply, it was getting worse and worse and my baby was crying after eating and hungry every hour. It was horrible. I tried every supplement and nasty herbal bars, herbal teas, herbal "candy," power pumping, etc. Nothing worked. Changed to a low-carb, mostly animal-based diet and I've been able to stop taking all the supplements and my baby gets plenty of milk now.

    I been on the high protein low carb eating plan for 5 months lost 22 pounds lost 4 inches on my waist I'm 47 years old 5 '7" tall went from 160 lbs to 138 lbs. Will eat like this forever! Had my yearly physical exam with bloodwork done. Doctor said i was real healthy and to keep my current exercise program pre bloodwork results. All bloodwork tests came out good except my LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol was high at 253 and recommend to go on statin meds. I politely declined.

      No one stays vegan for long, because they eventually get very sick. Only the young can be vegan because the fruit burns out the pancreas, and the starchy carbs also contribute to insulin resistance.
      It’s bonkers that the animal at the top of the global apex pyramid is copying the diet of cows and sheep.
      Vegans do it because they have been brainwashed into thinking they are saving the world, and that eating animals is cruel and unusual punishment, and has adverse health consequences.

    Keto isn’t hard, it’s satisfying in every way.
    After a disabling accident I was forced to quit my active lifestyle and put nearly 20kg on and got from 10% body fat to 36%.
    Keto literally saved my life.

    I'm actually thankful I got covid, bc I lost my sense of taste I managed to get off coke( I was having 2-3 a day for 14 years) and switch to coke zero bc I couldn't taste the difference, and while not healthy either it doesn't spike my insulin, and making that switch was huge and the first step to get on a Keto diet. I thought about doing keto before but I never committed bc I knew I couldn't give up coke. But 3 months since quitting coke, 2 months on low carbs, and 1 month of strict keto I've lost 27lbs. My next step is to get off coke zero which I think will be a lot easier now I don't crave sweet things, just got to get over the caffeine addiction.

    well... I have been on the keto diet for 2 months . I have dumped 16 pounds. My blood pressure has dropped significantly. It is a challenge, but I am not hungry, mostly just trying to resist influence by others to have goodies to eat. I do believe it is different for everyone, you have to fine tune the fat/protein/carb ratio to fit your body metabolism. After 2 months I am now trying to really focus in on super healthy,nutritional carbs just for the needed vitamins/minerals. But I believe I have broken the sugar ( as in drinks, cookies ,ice cream, candy ) addiction....and I was really hooked. The thing that surprised me the most was how sensitive I have become to foods. I am still drinking 2 large cups of coffee in the morning and I can really feel the caffiene and I know this is not good so that is my neck hurdle, dump the coffee or at least get it down to a very small cup in the morning....damn I love the coffee

    LCHF and IF I’ve lost 19kg (42 lbs) and maintained this lose for over five years.
    Blood chemistry is excellent. My Triglycerides/HDL is less than 1 .

    When you focus on obesity rather than insulin, you stigmatize people with obesity. Thin people also are insulin resistant. And obesity is also caused by stress hormones, hypothyroidism, and chronic inflammation (which can be caused by many many non-dietary sources).

You can lose weight by starving or you can lose weight by reversing insulin resistance and hyperinsulinemia all the while being satisfied and allowing your metabolism to fire (accomplished by some combination of fasting and ketogenic foods). The key difference is sustainability. Sure you can eat around the clock in a caloric deficit and expect to lose weight, but only after months of fatigue and a tanked metabolism. There's a reason people can never stick to these calories-in/calories-out diets, and it has nothing to do with their willpower or their gluttony. Starvation is not a healthy treatment, and it's important to remember that losing weight does not always imply good health, but good health always implies losing weight. Just because a weight-loss method works doesn't mean it magically achieves healthcare relevance.

    I have a friend who's a beer alcoholic. He only eat once a day, or every other day. He hate sweets, fruit and vegetables, and only eat meat. He can work for 8 to 10 hours a day with no problem. Is it because of the omad, Intermittent fasting and carnivore diet I'm confused🤔

    I would be careful with the statement at @38:38 .. "carbs are carbs". That sounds a lot like "calories are calories" and is also incorrect! (e.g. half of sucrose is fructose, and that makes a big difference.)

      Carbs are not sugar. Sugar is half fructose which is 10 times worse.
      If glucose is as bad as fructose how do we explain the 300 gram plus of glucose people eat in the healthiest populations. Ie Sardinia, Costa Rica, japan, and parts of California. And carbohydrate consumption didnt increase in asian and African countries and yet when fructose came in massively (no increase in total carbs), we asians are getting sicker and sicker.
      So absolutely, you are right. CARBS ARE NOT SUGAR!!!

    Its hard to eat less than 20 gr. of carbs a day... Just 1 avocado has 18 gr., 1 carrot has 7 gr 1 egg has 2 gr., protein is transform into glucose by glucogénesis...

    As a health and fitness professional and having a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol and diabetes, this is an interesting topic. A factor that wasn’t really touched on is that regardless if you’re eating low carb, keto, or balanced diet….1. you will not lose fat if your calorie intake is above your maintenance level. You may lose water weight initially when cutting carbohydrates however that will plateau and weight loss will stop if calorie intake is above maintenance. 2. Is the blood work improvements a result of the weight loss or a the macronutrient changes in your diet. When examining the meta data in regards to lipid profile and blood work, it tends to suggest it’s a result of the weight loss and not the particular diet profile.
    I’m honestly on the fence in regards to point 2. I have very low body fat, exercise daily with cardio and resistance training and my cholesterol and A1c are still high. I’m almost willing to do an experiment on myself following a low carb diet with maintenance calories and rechecking my blood work in a couple months.

    I'd like to know what the hell they do with our milk these days. It plays hell with my knees but butter and cream doesn't. I can eat butter and put cream in my coffee all day long but milk.... Milk absolutely cripples me and did so for many years before I stopped using the stuff. I couldn't believe it was milk, I'd given up everything else that had any kind of sugar in it except milk. Imagine my shock at the age of sixty eight to find I no longer had arthritis.

      I couldn't drink "regular" US milk for years. No issue in most european countries.
      That said- have you been tested for lactose intolerance? I'm tolerant, but something else in US milk just... wrecks me.
      I know it sounds preachy, but try organic milk. I could suddenly drink it by the gallon.
      That said, I went very low carb a few months ago so I don't drink much milk now.

    😮 Viewing such images... Diabetes is a scary disease! Additionally, in the past few children were suffering from cancer, asthma, and various allergies. There hardly was any (that I can remember) who had serious learning problems, and autism was extremely rare.
    When it comes to plant/grain-based food pyramid: So fitting, since this is basically how ancient Egytians were eating.

    Gut-Microbiome seems part to Inflammation...
    A third major factor, after
    1) Insulin, and
    2) Inflammation, is IMO
    3) Insufficiencies.
