Making Silver Lining Cold Process Landscape Soap with the Sculpted Layers Technique

  • I made this soap in collaboration with 91 other members of the Soap Challenge Club as my "entry" for the #secretsoapchallenge in honor of Amy Warden.
    There was no official challenge this month as Amy is battling cancer and had surgery. However, several other members took charge and organized for everyone to make a special soap for Amy with a message to show her our support during this difficult time.
    I decided on this design, which I named Silver Lining, because I wanted to wish Amy for the sun's rays to break through the storm she's facing and shine for her from here on forward.
    The soap developed some glycerin rivers in it, but these just added to the charm of it. The layers with storm clouds got outlines and a bit of texture and as someone else pointed out, the sun has a sort of halo effect around the rays, too.

    This is my first time ever watching soap being made like this. I truly enjoyed the process. At first I could not imagine how the layers were being formed and as I watched I realized just how creative an artist you are. The details that show in each layer show the passion you have for your craft.

    What a lovely tribute, the end message was beautiful. It would be great to see the cut of the soap rather than just a picture as it always makes me think the rest of the bars maybe didn't turn out so well, when you only get to see one of them properly in a photo. Seeing the cut is always an exciting bit to witness.

    OMG it is so amazing, congrats. I have a question, you did one part in one day and the other part tne next day so how it get together? I tough when you cut it will separate or something, so how do you do that? Thank you.

    • @CreamyObsession
      @CreamyObsession  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thank you! No, it doesn't separate. I covered it with plastic wrap for the night but that was all. If it hasn't cured for long, the soap usually will not reject the next layers. I also oven processed it, so perhaps this heats the soap and helps it all stick? The only time I had layers separate was when I made a mica line too thick.

    i love how you always manage to use most of the soap 'batter' you've prepared so there's no soap being unused or wasted. I've seen a lot of soap makers on youtube that left their soap 'batter' unused and just bring them out of camera frame which is so unsatisfying to watch 😂
    sorry for the broken english, i hope you understand what i mean🤭

    • @CreamyObsession
      @CreamyObsession  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! Your English is perfect, I understand 😊
      I don't always show it on camera, but I always try to use every drop. If it doesn't go into the mold, it goes into individual cavity mold. Even the excess that I scrape out from each layer gets used... I usually put it in piping bags and pipe flowers for future soap!
      Thanks so much for stopping by, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video 💕

    How do you not get bubbles with those tiny spikes?

    • @CreamyObsession
      @CreamyObsession  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The batter had to be super thin and runny, and I poured it from one side to the other to allow the air room to escape. I also banged out the few bubbles that were trapped in there. 😊

  • @sawcrys9231
    @sawcrys9231 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    It's gorgeous! So it's that ok to microwave the batter if it is over trace?

    • @CreamyObsession
      @CreamyObsession  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends, really. In my particular instance, my soap batter got a little thick because it was too cool. Therefore, microwaving it helped to loosen the batter by melting the solid butters that were solidifying. In another instance, if the batter is tracing quickly because you're soaping too warm, you could end up hot processing it if you microwave it. I hope that this helps!

    • @CreamyObsession
      @CreamyObsession  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you! I waited from 20 minutes to a couple hours in between pouring the layers and scraping them. It depends on the color, and how thick the trace was at the time of the pour. Overall, it took me 2 days to complete all the pours but I had stopped halfway through and finished the next day.

    Heyy I heard that if you let the soap set too much between each layer, it will have a hard time sticking together... Can you share on how you do yours since you need 2 days to do this soap?

    • @CreamyObsession
      @CreamyObsession  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I oven process mine (cpop). This melts the layers together, I assume, and I've never had one reject the other or any sort of separation. Hope this helps!

    That may have been the most intricate, detailed and absolutely beautiful soap I have seen to date. Your process and video presentation was the most amazing experience! From the music, description of each process, even the video speed was outstanding... It took me to another place that felt warm and safe, I didn't want it to end!! Kudo's to you and thank you so very much for sharing.. you are truly an inspiration.. again my sincerest appreciation.

    How do you go about deciding how much soap to make for each layer? I have tried these a couple of times and I don’t seem to be able to get it right. I know I’m supposed to mix each layer separately so that the last layer is just as fluid as the first was, but I’m struggling with the amount for each layer. Is it just trial and error basically or do you have a system? Thanks in advance! I love your vids 😁👏🏻👍🏻

    • @CreamyObsession
      @CreamyObsession  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't mix each layer separately, just whisk the main batch to an emulsion instead of blending to a trace. Sometimes I do make several batches, but each one normally makes a few layers. You could calculate the percentage of the total batch that each layer takes up, but I prefer to eyeball it. I can usually guess approximately how much I need to split off.

  • @AggroGizmo
    @AggroGizmo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Does the lye get fully incorporated when you hand mix? Like When you split off a batch like that before blending it, ever mess with the ratio? Like on parts lye heavy some more oil heavy?
    Just asking as someone who's really curious. I absolutely love your soap!

    • @CreamyObsession
      @CreamyObsession  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It does get fully incorporated. I don't show on video, but I mix by hand for 5-10 minutes before immediately splitting off a portion. Then I use the blender in each portion. I also mix again thoroughly each time before pouring off more. This just helps me keep it fluid enough to work with it. I do test with pH strips, and have never had an issue yet.

    Your soaps always beautiful, it like an artwork. 😊
    But how each layer of soap don't seperate once you wait until it set first before you pour next layers?
    I saw some failures from other soap maker that each layers of soap they don't stick together.

    • @CreamyObsession
      @CreamyObsession  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! This is cold process soap, so it isn't as prone to separating as melt and pour soap. Also, oven processing when I am finished with it helps to meld all of the layers together as well. I don't have any issues with separation this way :)

    Very interesting technique. This is actually how very ornate and detailed architectural moldings used to be made using plaster. The plaster would be poured in a long mold similar to the soap mold you are using. As the plaster would begin to set up they would run a steel stencil down the mold to create the relief much the same way you are doing with the plastic stencils. Definitely an interesting technique and one I would like to try. Thank you for sharing your video.

    • @CreamyObsession
      @CreamyObsession  ปีที่แล้ว

      No, this isn't glycerin/melt and pour soap. I use the cold process method and my base is my recipe of oils and butters that I add lye to, to make traditional soap.

  • @azfarulnaim1486
    @azfarulnaim1486 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I dont understand the science behind these soaps. How can the soap in the mould was almost harden/thicken but the the same batch in the mixing bowl wasnt? How did you do that?

    • @CreamyObsession
      @CreamyObsession  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The batter in the bowl wasn't blended to a trace, just stirred to an emulsion by hand, so it took longer to thicken. Also, I didn't add fragrance to the batter in the bowl, I added that last the the individual sections after adding the color and before pouring. Fragrance oils tend to speed things up

      I like to bring the soap to a thicker consistently but also have it at the point where it will pour easily. I don't want it to be runny, nor too thick to have to scoop it into the mold. I hope that explains it?

      Creamy Obsession and there is me that calculates each layer and adds separate the lye, still sometimes it turns to hell when i need fluid soap the most! Genius. Thanks for the fall back strategy 😃

    • @CreamyObsession
      @CreamyObsession  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I rarely bother with all the calculations. As long as I hand mix and add fragrance separately, I have had my batter stay fluid for as long as 15 hours at a time (12 layer soap in one go). Honestly though, I hate the thought of all those dishes more than the calculations themselves!

    • @guelle01
      @guelle01 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Creamy Obsession wow, 15hrs! No way. What i do, i usually clean the pot like you do and re use it. But honestly i learned that cleaning method from idreaminsoap Lisa, and just few months ago. I don’t want to think how my pipes look. Brrr. Soapers are best!

  • @DreamwalkerTenesha

    How were you able to get the layers to adhere together after waiting until the next day??!

    • @CreamyObsession
      @CreamyObsession  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I CPOP the soap once I am finished, meaning I oven process the loaf in a preheated oven at 170 degrees Fahrenheit (turned off after 10 minutes) and leave the soap in the warm oven overnight. I've never had issues with separation. Once, I poured the last layer into a soap a month later! 😆 I don't recommend waiting that long, usually try to complete my design within a few days.

    • @CreamyObsession

      I was making several batches at the same time off camera, and they accounted for most of the soap batter. Whatever is left over after scraping gets put into individual cavity molds or is piped into flowers for future soaps. None goes to waste!
