  • 2018 BMW R1200 GS Adventure Review - First look at the TFT screen!
    I'm a huge fan of the BMW R1200GS and have been an owner of an LC "standard" machine for several years. One of the complaints I have made about the GS is that the instrument panel is way to small to read, BMW have listened (although possibly not just to me!) and now added the option of a spectacularly clear TFT display to the latest 2018 spec machines. I was very interested therefore to ride one of the new machines as soon as possible and thanks to my pals at Bahnstormer in Maidenhead I have now test ridden the 2018 GSA with all the bells and whistles - stay tuned for my first impressions review...
    Many thanks to Bahnstomer in Maidenhead for making this review possible, check 'em out via www.bahnstormer...

    Love my GSA. It's given my a whole new outlook on biking. I've had them on and off for over 40 years but for the last 25 it's been fun only, dry days and maximum of around 1000 miles a year. Got the gsa in March and it's done 5K already. Travelled from Elgin to west Cumbria (310 miles) none stop in heavy rain and loved every minute. Still had 80 miles range in the tank as well

    After watching this video for the third time, I began salivating like one of Pavlov's dogs. In my mind, the GSA is my " Ultimate Motorcycle" . In reality, I don't need all those hi tech features to enjoy a bike. It all goes back to the feeling I had as an eight year old, throwing a leg over my brothers 2.5 horsepower minibike. From that moment 47 years ago, I was hooked! Thank"s TMF, for another great review!

    Another great review. I test rode a standard suspension GSA last year with full luggage and my wife as pillion. I'm also 5'9" and I found it just to tall for slow riding and carpark manoeuvres. Thankfully the dealer had a secondhand GSA with reduced height suspension. I was totally hooked and bought the bike. My best bike ever, fantastic tourer and so comfortable, maybe just a little turbulence from the windscreen but nothing to get worked up about. It's possible I may get an MRA in the future, not sure yet. Totally agree, absolutely fantastic bike.

    Well done as usual, I bought an Africa Twin based on your review and a long test ride. Was going for a GS having had the older GSA. But the cost of these bikes is now out for me. The AT is very good just done 560 MLS over the weekend with friends never had an ache, which for me is rare (excuse the pun). Weather as you know was pretty awful but the bike was again brilliant so thanks for these hugely informative reviews as they are so unbiased which us riders need.
    Best. David

    I got a 2017 GS Exclusive..first week the entire ignition system had to be changed..there is a current recall on all GS from '15 for faulty forks and last month a crack appeared on the intake...best bike ever when its working..better have warranty! still can't see what I'd replace it with!..you have to own em to understand..superb bike..but flawed no doubt..

    Nice informative review as always. I agree with you, the combination of Sat Nav and TFT is the way to go, the TFT does look great and I look forward to your detailed review on it. The 1200 GSA has always been my favourite bike and I have been lucky enough to have a few of them over the years. I am currently on a 1200 GSA TE, it's my third GSA, and probably my last. To spec up a GSA with all the toys ( as you do) plus hard luggage you are now talking £ 20K, I don't think I can justify that sort of money now. There are other options out there that will do the job for less money, and they are excellent adventure bikes. I think TFT will be the norm on most new adventure bikes soon.

      Yea, will be interesting to see what the connectivity will be like. Rumours say you need the BMW bluetooth, but I've seen the manual, and it says anything thats A2DP. So my Schuberth should be ok!! Roll on tomorrow :)

    Thanks for the review mr Flyer! I'm getting mine this Saturday 😀. Without the TFT: in my view connectivity is too distracting. On top of that it's a shame BMW did not integrate the Navigator. Seems like KTM forced them to release the TFT too soon.

      @ptanderson1000 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Having spend a bit of time on one with the TFT screen running the nav, it’s not distracting at all. The directions only pop up when you’re approaching a turn. It’s all very clearly laid out and you can get all the info you need in a very short glance.
      And also worth noting that you spend less time trying to figure out what the dials say (as on the old analogue dials) as the information is so much clearer, so if anything its less distracting.

    Another gold standard review, fantastic bike, my only concern would be moving a fully luggage loaded bike around, probably 620lbs? you'd have to be really careful with slopes, gravel etc, which is probably why the crash bars are fitted, my other concern would be the longevity of all the electronics, probably really expensive when they break?
    keep em coming TMF!

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you Jeff - and yes I agree on the fully loaded weight point, which is partly why I chose the standard GS over the GSA when I bought mine....

      As far as handling, the GSA is an outstanding bike. A customer brought in his 1150 GSA that had an 11.8 gallon fuel tank, fully loaded paniers and camping gear strapped to the back. After having new tires spooned on, I took it out to scrub-in the tires. That big GSA showed none of the extra weight. (I would have put the test ride weight at approximately 750 - 850 pounds.)

    I'm not a KTM fanboy, it's just the KTM DNA that appeals me, but this GS to be honest is the best looking GS they have made so far. Finally a GS adventure bike not designed to look boring. Nice job BMW. In real life they look very nice. Especially that blue frame. I've never tested one, perhaps I should. :)

      TheMissendenFlyer I just swapped a Tiger 800 abs for an Africa Twin in August. I love the Honda but I always find myself wishing I had more. 1200 gs rallye, 1290 super Adventure, customised Triumph scrambler! The list goes on. . .

    Another great little road test, very informative. Just want to clarify that the LED aux lights have been around on the GSA since 2014. I also had a KTM1290s on demo but only for the day. I loved the power and handling, but getting back on my 2016 GSA was so much more comfortable. So sticking with it for another year and then may well buy the Rally version as tested. All the best from Tim ex Missenden boy.

    Hi, I know it’s been awhile since you posted this, but I do tend to go back and watch a lot of yours when I change your bike which is quite often thinking of changing my bmw 1000xr to the GS 1200 2018 mainly for my wife to be more comfortable. Another great review, I wonder though after watching a lot of your content are there any bad bikes, up and down the list of manufacturers you have tested and the entire price range from a couple of grand to this you find positives and no matter what you get on you seem to have fun. I think 19K is way over the top.

    • @TheMissendenFlyer
      @TheMissendenFlyer  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I love this bike. Money is not my concern. Just want the best riding, best quality equipment and experience money can buy. This BMW R1200 GSA May have tipped the scale for me. I have not heard the horn, to me an important feature with clueless cell phone using caged drivers. If the horn is unacceptable I would add the USA made Denali 120 decibel horn and lastly the Denali or Clearwater high 6k lumen for additional safety awareness and driving lights. Good job here Mate. Thank you.

    Visited Williams Mcr weekend and couldn't believe the loaded £22k price tag on an Adv, I run a 14 plate but think won't ever buy new! the PCP returns will be my route. Although nothing wrong with mine it's great suspension, and has all bells and whistles. Interesting test you do, as always! Try the Tenera thought it went great when I tested a year ago comes at a price point, saw loads in Europe!

    I've found your reviews to be informative and it's so hard to be objective on the big BM. But like you, I found my BMW GSA to be much more comfortable touring long days than my 1190R KTM but in the dirt the KTM felt so much more at ease than the BM. 21" front wheel and WP suspension is very hard to beat off pavement.
    I took delivery of mine here in the US 2 weeks ago. I was so impressed with the Rallye spec bike, I traded my old GSA(2014) and my K1600GT the day I saw it.
    The new GSA was so familiar compared to my 14 model year, but It does seem to have some notable changes to engine smoothness and maybe a little more performance.
    However, I've lost a few mpg's. Went from consistently getting 52 mpg on my 14, to 46-48mpg on the new Rallye. The new color and graphics is just superb IMHO,
    Keep up the good reviews,

    That's a serious piece of kit. Absolute beauty and an intelligent one too (rare). Great to see BMW made several improvements and not just whack a new model out with only a lick of fresh paint.
    Yes it's pricey, but it's pitched a the right market. People with a bit expendable cash who fancy some tour and travel, why not do it in comfort with all the trimmings?!! Nice review TMF, especially because you have one the previous models.

    Perhaps it's the styling and rugged appearances of a go anywhere machine that makes these big sellers, but unless I planned on riding off the tarmac regularly I would go with a K or RT, especially for full fairing weather protection and additional comfort features like the standard heated seats. Plus panniers are included on the K or RT. But I do get the attraction to these beasts. Nice review as usual sir! Cheers!

    Very hard not to like this bike and review. You always give us facts as opposed to hyperbole but I still think at heart you favour BMW over other brands and I will say I can understand and accept that. What I’m eagerly awaiting is your review and opinions of the new Triumph 1200 XRT. Think I can predict it won’t please you as much as the BMW but that’s where my money is going. After I posted my comment, I watched your ride video into Central London. On the same 03 1150GS I commuted from Watford to my work across the road from Buckingham Palace, so the motorway ride, filtering down the A40 and the roads around the palace and West London brought back a rush of different memories (not as fun as the Chilterns, but more "exciting"). Thanks for making my day. Now back to work so I can afford the bike you reviewed :)

    Great review so happy to see this so soon. I do think this is the Rally edition though with street tires and comfort seat. Rally has the blue frame and some other bits. EDIT nope just checked local website here in town, not rally, its a premium color scheme on the GSA. Btw since we are comparing import pricing, this is what a fully loaded one costs in the states... 2018 BMW R 1200 GS Adventure Light White / Cordoba Blue Premium $24,790.00
    EDIT wow saw another vid and saw the bikes manual and in the US it is Rallye.

    Good review, as always. A problem i forsee for high tech bikes is by the time they become affordable, to normal bikers on tighter budgets, they will be about 8 years old and i would worry about the reliability. Are the electronics going to work the same, and if not, they could cause a serious accident to the rider who is dependent on the safety aids. Also, if anything goes wrong with the bike, the owner could be faced with a massive repair bill running into thousands of pounds. The same could be said for the cheaper bikes with all the electronics, because after a few years old they could be expensive to fix also. Not like today where people can buy a cheap bike and any problems can normally be fixed quite cheaply but not so in the future

    Great review TMF, I am looking to renew my 2014 GSTE and already have the Nav VI so I am glad you showed the new TFT display as I thought it may be surplus especially for all the money as an extra but from your report it looks like it is worth having so looking forward to you more detailed video on that. I took a 2017 GS out which was keyless and I initially thought it would be a gimmick but as I am always loosing my keys I would definitely get it, I also really like the Rallye but not the seat or screen.

    Enjoyed that, as always. When are Dave going to give you your own series? Probably not totally sold the GSA Rallye colour scheme, but that TFT when paired with the Navigator looks really smart. Bought my straight GS 3 months too soon! The older auxiliary lights are also LED. The old ones are supposed to be prone to water ingress (of course, I purchased mine 6 weeks before the new ones came out...). Ah, life is but a hamster wheel.

    Great review........ £19K for a bike..!.. I wonder what the pinch point will be regard bikes being simply too expensive.... We are starting to see adventure - touring bike perfectly suitable for the job (Super Tenere) for a fraction of the price... Is it the case that a majority of these bikes (GSADV) will become Chelsea tractors.... never going anywhere near a curb let alone a track..?

      Dave Youde fair point Dave but a lot of people (like me) buy a GS as a comfortable, go anywhere , very capable touring machine. There are of course cheaper bikes but as the old saying goes you ‘pays your money and you makes your choice’.

      On the one hand, bikes are no longer essential transport, but a luxury item or a 'lifestyle' product therefore it's one of the first expenses people cut back on so you'd think that cheaper bikes would sell better at this point in time with economic uncertainty ahead of us. On the other hand, if only those with the means are buying i.e. filthy rich, why not sell uber-expensive bikes since only the wealthy are buying them...

    As attractive a touring package the R1200GS Adventure is with optional paniers and top box, consider a realistic alternate choice for the same amount of money - The 205 HP 4-cylinder Boxer powered Subaru BRZ. While you are in shock consider: fully synchronized 6-speed manual gearbox, RWD sport suspension w/ limited slip differential, auto climate control & heater, an integral roof, VCS, TCS, ABS, 6-way adjustable bucket seats for two, Starlink multimedia, airbags, a rear seat & small trunk, plus power windows! I already own four motorcycles. This makes sense.

    Excellent review as usual TMF. The speedo on the 2017 model is as you say very difficult to see for those of us with short range issues. I will be very interested to see your review on the TFT screen as I have been trying to find out more about it on line but as yet there isn’t much out there. It would be good to hear your opinion of it and the connectivity side of things. The impression I get is that you have to have the BMW Comms to get the full benefit of the features. I know you aren’t that fussed with the keyless ride and I must admit that neither was I initially but now after four months use on my RT I absolutely love it. Anyway keep up the good work and I shall eagerly await your next vid.

    Great review TMF, after my test ride on a GS my only complaint was the numerals on the analog speedometer. I simply could not read it quickly enough and keep my eyes on the road. Yes the Nav 5/6 can display speed but that surely defeats the point of the GPS. I had the TFT demonstrated by the “sales assistant “ and it was a no brainer to add to my new bike order, the downside was another £500 to the end bill. Only 8 days to go. :- ))

    Another peach TMF, thanks. Dunno if you remember me but I bought the 2018 KTM Super Adv S, it really is the bike with the best motor, that thing hauls ass, it's SO quick :) However...... and I hate to admit it..... the bike's not comfortable and I know as I've put 10,700 miles on it in 5 months. She get REALLY hot under the seat (unbearably so) and the seat's too hard, put those two things together and I'm now looking at the BMW. All told if you're going travelling I feel it's gotta be the beamer, although I gonna be absolutely gutted to let that monster motor go, can't afford both :(. Cheers again awesome stuff as always :)

    As to the cost, most of the bikes you see in the US are Harleys, at least in the southern US where the necks are tinged with red. HD's can and do set folks back easily $30k US so $28 for the BMW fully loaded isn't far off...

I'm 6'2, so I am very comfortable with the size/height of this machine. An added plus is the fuel range of this bike.
