Different compression ratios make all the difference 1993-1997 were all 8:1 1998-2001 they were 9:1 and then met in the middle after with 8:5:1 my wrx has a jdm ej205 with 9:1 like my99-01 so it’s heaven and nothing compared to the rest of the 2009 wrx’s and sti’s for that matter
@@saccusgalifinaccus3184 Headers are probably making a bigger difference as the non equal length gives em that sound and depending on how much the offset is it can sound very different. For example check out Adam LZ's cream 240. earlier it sounded like a 4cylinder would and later on with different headers and exhaust it almost sounded like a rotory.
@schulze design lesson time: if you compress air tighter it’s going to have a different tone between 9:1 - 8:1 it’s because you have the same 2.0 liters of air being pushed through but a tighter clearance which will make a bigger bang when a lesser compression takes more forced induction do create the same tone. Headers when it comes down too it isn’t to make a sound it’s to scavenge as much flow from past exhaust beats to ensure that the cylinder creates wants to find the pressure difference and escape to atmosphere. You can mess with the pattern between long tube short tube equal length unequal length it’s not going to change much unless you change cams timing cylinder bore intake and exhaust ports; what I’m getting at is the sound is more to do with bore stroke and compression ratio. Which I can sit here and break down each my engine setup on what differences in mechanical build may be the sound. Shit not to even get into the turbo which increases induction and compression ratios further.
@Shulze design did you even think of any of these factors or do you buy into all the media manja on “ oohhh this 600 dollar exhaust is gonna make your wrx sound like a porche that has two extra cylinders and half the exhaust pipe with double the engineering
@@saccusgalifinaccus3184 Yes that's what Headers should do but you can't ignore the fact that they also affect the sound. I didn't say that compression has no effect on sound. Equal vs unequal length headers don't change the sound much? LoL then tell me how some gt86 or other boxer 4s sound like a normal 4cylinder with equal length headers and sound like a Subaru with unequal lengths between the 2 banks.
Sorry but i design speakers as a hobby for 8years or something by now and i know how acoustics work. If two same sources are firing into two different lengths of pipe the sound from the longer pipe takes more time to get to the Turbo in the case of a wrx and because of that the sound is overlapping in a different way than if the pipes were the same length.

Now go and learn how acoustics work before you are telling things that aren't true. Sure compression, cams and so on change the sound too. On a V or boxer engine sound also changes if one bank has shorter headers than the other bank as you can hear in this video.
I could go as far as simulating it with some acoustic simulation software but that would be a waste of time as this video should also proofs it.

I love WRX's. I've wanted one since they started being sold in the US in 2002. In fact, I just bought my first new car ever a few weeks ago. A 2020 WR Blue manual WRX. It had 7 miles on it when I drove it off the dealer lot. All that being said, the wing at 8:10 is stupid. It's too much.
