  • Khewra salt mine is located in Jhelum District Punjab Pakistan. This place is 160 km from Islamabad and 250 km from Lahore. There is a lot to see here for the tourism enthusiasts. Khewra Salt Mine (Punjabi, Urdu: خیرا نامک کان), also known as Mayo Salt Mine, is the second largest salt mine in the world, located in Khewra, Punjab, Pakistan. The mine is in the Salt Range of the Pothohar Plateau, originating from the Indus River in Punjab. The mine is famous for its production of pink Khewra salt, often marketed as Himalayan salt, and is a major tourist attraction, attracting 250,000 tourists annually. Its history dates back to its discovery by Alexander's troops in 320 BC, but its trade began in the Mughal period. The main underground tunnel was developed by mining engineer H. Warth in 1872 during the British rule. After independence, BMR took over till 1956 and then PIDC owned the mines till 1965. After the Indo-Pak war in 1965, the WPIDC took over the management of the salt mines and in 1974, the Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation took control of the mine, which is still the largest source of salt in the country, accounting for about 99 Percent pure halite produces more than 350,000 tons annually. Estimates of salt reserves in the mine range from 82 million tons to 600 million tons.
