    I love Dagoth's story and how confusing and conflicting the accounts are. Even if Dagoth is telling the truth that he loved Nerevar and protected the tools at all costs, it hardly matters. He'd become a madman and a terror that needed to be stop.
    It makes him a very tragic character, imo. His death is a bitter reward for his loyalty.

      Back in the 90s there was a D&D type game on AOL (Neverwinter Nights) and a group of guys where playing a campaign where a certain Dagoth Ur achieved godhood. I played a paladin and was target of their ridicule, although I'm the real mad man mocking the god, Fa-goth Dur! They'd tried so hard to make fun of me, they laughed, I laughed, they got pissed, I laughed harder.
      I even adopted the name Dagoth, because I'm the real mad god, lord of laughter, sir Laughsalot haha I didn't make into TES though... "I am the jester in my own court, for I am the mad king who rules all! Bow before me so I can hop over you!"

    Beautiful documentary, as it were. While I don't hold the same rose-colored glasses a lot of Elder Scrolls fans hold about Morrowind, it was a great game for its time and you have to admit the lore keeping in the game was absolutely top notch. I love how, just like in the real world, some things about history are lost to the sands of time, like what really happened to the first Nerevar. You also get this feeling that everyone you talk to who claims to have knowledge of what went down are lying to you in some way, to suit their own ends. Again, just like you would get in our world, especially when it comes to religious matters.

    • @thexith
      @thexith  5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I love the sociological and philosophic approach you took in this comment, the same approach which ultimately made me to create this video; showcasing how easily someone's perception can either be tainted or maybe even falsely elevated. I've always been so fascinated with the outcome of the second Battle of Red Mountain, lines were intensely blurred and the victor most probably wrote a distorted version of events. Nearly all sources(except the Temples Heirographa) point to the fact that Nerevar was initially murdered by the Tribunal, this explains why Sotha Sil's mental health heavily declined - his legacy was built upon a foundation of betrayal and untold horrors, he even claimed so himself. I myself never really enjoyed the gameplay Morrowind had to offer as well, but Morrowinds lore only struck me as beautifully intricate a year ago, for I had dug through some Tribunal lore for an anonymous source. Once I delved into it more, I honestly think it might harbour one of the best and most rewarding fractions of Elder Scrolls Lore, it definitely ranks with Martin Septim manifesting himself into an aspect of Akatosh. The Chimer were a magnificent race, they were the first race to devote themselves to proficient Daedric Princes, princes which cared for them as the Aedra would for their Shezzarines. Fictional history usually never strikes me emotionally, but imagining Nerevar's reign, and Azura's devotion crumble into bits and pieces by the hands of their own product is disheartening to say the least. Loved your comment, and thank you for leaving it. An even better video on Sotha Sil is incoming, stay tuned.

    I honestly think from his perspective Dagoth did no wrong. He tried to have the tools destroyed, and when they weren't he protected them faithfully. When his best friend was murdered by his closest friends, it likely made him vengeful and slowly go mad. But to his mind the disease he's spreading is enlightenment and his goals are to rid Morrowind of those who murdered his best friend and the empire who subjugates them. It's not that he's evil, he's simply deluded.

      You're right to an extent. Their punishment was grave and came with repercussions for the entire Chimer race. Now, not saying I agree, but Azura punished the entire Chimer race because their representatives(the Tribunal), committed an unspeakable act. Azura wanted them to feel the pain their greed caused the Chimer, and to remind them of her everytime they looked at their followers.

    Really nice work on this video! Love to see the appreciation the elder scrolls community has for Dagoth Ur. I've always wondered if tapping into the heart fundamentally changed the person doing it, or if it magnified more subtle character traits (egotism, delusion, paranoia, etc) to unprecedented levels. The question being: was Voryn Dagoth driven mad by the tools and the heart, or was he already a bit of a madman to begin with and becoming a demi-god gave credence to any existing delusions and paranoia?

    • @thexith
      @thexith  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Even during the making of this video I tried to approach the topic of Dagoth and his shift in mentality with less bias than most people, mostly because there's just something about the interaction he has with the Nerevarine in TES3 that makes me question the picture that the Tribunal painted. I think the heart just magnified certain traits to a point where he was infatuated by the guise of infinite knowledge; this undoubtedly bred his need for totalitarian control so that he can also feed his lust for knowledge and further divinity.

This dude played Dagoth Ur in that D&D type game with some others and they had achieved godhood. Later on Dagoth Ur was a god in TES... yet that's not the first game with Dagoth Ur... to my knowledge atleast.

      Neither do I, the ending sequence was just me attempting to write his downfall artistically. There are a lot of indicators that some of his actions were justifiable, but on the other hand - totalitarian dominance by using the Akulakhan to conquer Tamriel and indoctrinate future generations isn't really the best look. His Demi-Gods were Ash Vampires, and the way he went about his business was rather savage and barbaric. I just presented all of the possible sides that contributed to his rage-fueled return, whether that included Tribunal propaganda or not. I also still believe Nerevar never even fought Dagoth in the chamber of the Heart, I strongly believe the Tribunal took his life after they did their deed with Nerevar on the slope/peak of Red Mountain, that is whilst Dagoth was guarding the tools in the Chamber below.
