    In the video I am using a "cheap" spray gun I bought off amazon. You need a 2.5 nozzle to spray gelcoat. At my shop I have very expensive spray guns but you DONT need that! Just be sure to set yourself up for success!! Please check out my NEW video that focuses on ONLY this cup gun and spraying gelcoat.

      at the time of this video it was a small rolling job site compressor. I now

    Cool stuff but fuk this i paint cars and do body work and this shit is way to complicated with way to many chemicals and mixes if i need to spray a boat ill just get some single stage and add a shit load of flex additive screw this

    • @HoldFastMarine
      @HoldFastMarine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah lol. Single stage is good but doesn’t last very long. Once you do it a few times it gets pretty easy!

    Great video, thanks! I'm a DIYer and have tried spraying gelcoat with varying degrees of success over the years. There is an additive/thinner called Duratec that I really like.
    The tip on removing the filter is gold. Can't wait to try that!
    Funny story: I sprayed a part one evening--it was cold in the garage and the gelcoat didn't want to kick. I warmed the kitchen oven to just over 100 degrees, turned it off and put the part in there overnight. Worked like magic; but, when the wife and kids came into the kitchen for breakfast the next morning I was not a popular man. Needless to say, I haven't done that again. Haha.
    Funny sidenote: Since this video is for a "Dorade Box" I thought would share that I've actually done a bit of sailing on Dorade. Great program.

    Looked like you mixed it with half the required hardener (4x16=32?). How did it turn out?
    I had my first experience wit gel coat (Evercoat One Coat - no wax needed) this week and even though I mixed it correctly it’s not curing. I wish I watched this first because you go to great effort to maintain room temp. I’m in CT and my garage was 62F during the first 24 hours. I have it up to 72F now but not sure it’s going to fully cure. Very upsetting.

    • @HoldFastMarine
      @HoldFastMarine  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gelcoat will not cure without wax, or putting pva over the top. Any polyester based material needs to have either wax, or pva added post spray. I always use the required amount of mekp, either by weight or drops.

    Great channel thank you! I’m in the process of spraying gelcoat layers. How many layers of gel coat do you recommend before sanding? I’m afraid I might send through. I’m spraying an entire boat 26 foot.They say 22 miles thick but how do you measure that when doing layers?

    • @HoldFastMarine
      @HoldFastMarine  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Well it is frustrating when someone says “this thick” but give you no reference. When your spraying it will be thick, make sure you use laminating gelcoat! Two coats of laminating and one coat of finishing should do the trick for you. You have a lot of sanding in your future my friend!!!

    Hello, so if you use gelcoat with wax, how many coat can you spray. Do you have a video explaining gelcoat with wax and without? Kinda confuse lol

    • @HoldFastMarine
      @HoldFastMarine  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gelcoat with wax needs to be sanded between coats. Without wax is a laminating gelcoat and can be applied several times. But you need to cure the unwaxed gelcoat with either pva or a final coat of gel with wax. Check out my other spray video

      Not advisable at all Rossi. Check it out. Gelcoat is a special formulation & viscosity is maintained by mfrrs for ease of application, always. By thinning it you are compromising quality as thinner will react in a haphazard manner. Earthling if course 🙏🙏🙏

      @@vasantuchil5302 I literally talked to them on the phone before I did my work. They said it’s fine and done all the time. I think the people who make it are to trust. You HAVE TO buy it without wax and apply the a coating at the end to cure it. If you don’t then the job is done wrong. If you add the wrong about of styrene(which is all you can use to thin, not acetone) then it’s done wrong. So there’s a lot to do right to make sure it’s done correctly
