  • It may seem like a dark art, but spraying Gel Coat is a simple process with some basic technique and maintenance your HLVP Spray gun can last for years and give you trouble free service. This video is my take on this subject and I hope it may help you in your projects.

    Great video. You obviously have a system that works, I'm a great fan of the 3M PPS products just the cups and liners will save you all the cup cleaning time and now that there are plenty of knock offs available for the adapters liners and outers the cost is pretty cheap too, just remember to pull the built in filter out if you're spraying Gelcoat. The Accuspray guns, especially the HO versions with pressure feed are great. Tips for the Accuspray aren't that expensive, can usually be reused and if it all goes wrong and the Gelcoat sets up well you've only lost a $5 tip

    Great video man lots of valuable information
    I have a few question for you. Did you used Gel Coat with Paraffin?and how many coats?
    When should the one without Paraffin be used and how many coats before giving the one with Paraffin?
    Where do you buy spray gel coat?

    Hi Ross,
    You ask for thing we would like to see and here is mine. Can you show how to do overhead glassing? I am talking like tabbing or repairs where the glass wants to fall away while you work. I am sure you will be doing a lot of this on your boat build and I am eager to see it done. Thanks so much for these videos I wish they were here 20 years ago when I was working in glass.

    Get the 3M pps system.Throw away the liner and clean out the gun in a fraction of the time with 1/10 of the solvent.

    Thanks Ross! I always learn new things from you. I disliked the cleanup part of the job, but it is important and you just made it easier. Oh and now I have to throw out the gel coat I've been keeping around for a couple of years! 😁

      I know it is hard to throw it out but it will only cause heartache when you have to do the job twice Daniel.Cheers buddy.Ross

      @@TH-cam_Zukz Our waste management company has a hazmat day every so often. You can take it to them and they will properly dispose of it for you, ands it's free where I live. Otherwise I would guess it is like paint, add the hardener and you can dispose of it like any other solid. I live in the US it might be totally different in other places.

      Simply mix about 10percent wax in styrene to mske flow coat and you can spray onto external surface then sand and polish to a finish.Rossco

    do you have to clean the gun between each gel coat application if you are doing a large area ?

    • @thecompositesshop
      @thecompositesshop  ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as the gel coat is live and the pot emptied between each pour you can continue.Cleaning is required prior to gel setting.Cheers Ross

    Say you were shooting a big mould, not quite as big as yours. And didn’t have a proper resin gun, do you reckon it’s possible to do with 3 of these guns and have a mixer person, a cleaner and a sprayer. Do you like these guns better than the other gelcoat guns that have the paper inserts and the cup on the back of the gun that are sold as “gelcoat guns”

      @thecompositesshop  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I honestly think a G100 cup gun is a much better solution for larger moulds.Hvlp guns are excellent small job tools and gear for repairs etc You would need to be constantly changing cups with a cup gun and I have sprayed moulds with 4-5 cups full at a sitting.The key is keeping pressure constant and moisture out of the air feed A dryer or gravity drain with moisture trap/ filter is an essential in any case.Rossco.
