I was there, actually. In fact, I not only did I help Darbont direct, but I coached Clancy with this scene. We shot it like 4 times, & it wasn't what was needed on camera so when Clancy wasn't able to muster that violence we needed for this scene, I asked him what means more in this world to you than anything, he said my children. So I said, imagine Frank here just did some horrific thing to one of them & you have just walked in to catch him, now you're defending them. Then he upped his game & beat Frank. True story.

He then mentioned that they were on an episode of ER a few years later, where he "killed him again." Clancy was portraying a doctor, Frank was playing an emergency victim, and Clancy had to administer a few amps of epinephrine to revive him, but Frank flatlined.
It makes me laugh too. The prisoner who said that must've been a real smartass. Hadley had a good comeback which shows that he's used to prisoners making smartass remarks.....
One of the most interesting parts of this scene is the guy at 2:57 that says "Cap, take it easy." A prison, full of men, who have done something warranting spending the rest of their life in there, has some that are less callous, violent, and bitter than the Captain of the guard. While it is just a movie and many people in prison are worse than this level of violence, it's just a good touch of storytelling hearing a distant voice of mercy coming from what are supposed to be the "bad guys", the inmates themselves. It adds the proper level of humanizing to really drive this movie forward.

Clancy Brown is such a beast in this movie. Everything from his delivery to the way he carries himself, he is completely menacing. Every time he'd show up on screen, there would just be this oppressive sense of dread. Super talented actor.

EdSkywalker even the guy in the cell next to him quietly telling him to shut up because he had a good side, people only did the Fresh fish for bets and I'm sure even they have broke down crying some of them aswell before hand on their first night so for them it's passing time and it's meant to be a bit of fun
If I were a convict with a convict mindset, I wouldn't have wanted the fat guy beaten to death either. I might have wanted to make fun of him /with swear words involved/ for laughs and pull pranks on him for being a crybaby but so long as he hadn't done anything too bad to get put into prison, pranking and teasing him would be as far as I'd go.

The first night would likely be the worst as the reality hits you that your former life is gone, you are now in a strange and scary place with other prisoners, you're in a place where seriously bad things happen daily, all your friends and family are gone from your life, your freedom is gone..."when they put you in that cell and those bars slam home, that's when you know it's for real. Whole life blown away in the blink of an eye, nothing left but all the time in the world to think about it"

It's not fear of violence or rape or harsh punishment, as much as it is the desire to just 'walk freely on a street' 'run in the woods' 'swim in an ocean.' Just 'physical' freedom. That's what gets prisoner's down the most, that and NO cold or even chilled milk lol. once you settle in, and have library privileges book access, and some friends, it really is something you adjust to faster than you'd expect. It's why even many of the most despised inmates do not want segregation for protection, and why many notorious inmates (serial killers etc) say they are happier in prison than having a chance at their old life. Because being on the outside is just too painful trying to manage your urges and impulsivity. A smart guy in prison also often becomes a guru of sorts, inside they're SOMEONE outside they're NO ONE.

He played serial killers in movies in 1980s and was the main villain in the 1986 movie Highlander with Sean Connery. He was a corrupt cop on an episode of Chicago PD I think in first or second season and plays a lot bad guys in cartoons but has played good characters to.

I get why Prison Guards beat up inmates sometimes but Hadley shouldn't have beaten up the fat guy just for being scared and crying out in fear. He should've just chucked him into solitary confinement for creating a disturbance or something.

2:06-2:07 Absolute 'perfect' acting by Morgan Freeman. That expression shows so many things that could be going through the character's mind "emotionally", it's absolutely 'Perfect'. This film is just....no words. This scene alone is just enough to leave someone like me speechless...
I like that in a way, this scene comes full circle. Hadley beats a prisoner for sobbing controllably from fear, then years later he himself gets his comuppence and is imprisoned/ executed, and like the poor guy he beat to death, finally feels the same fear, sobbing uncontrollably as Red mentions.
The movie never said Hadley was executed. How did you come across that?? I would even say we don't know if Hadley would do time because there would have to be proof and witnesses testify against him.

Having been to prison myself, here's my thoughts on the fat guy. One, I firmly believe he was either a case of mistaken identity through a lineup, or he unwittingly took the fall for someone else, got framed, etc. based on his insistence that there was a "mistake" , he's "not supposed to be" there, "not me", etc. I mean sure Red had the running joke with everybody that they were all innocent, but you get the feeling with the fat guy that he legit got railroaded in some form. In my experience it's extremely rare that such a spineless blubbering amoeba would go out and commit crimes in the first place - someone like that would just be too scared of getting caught. Two, Hadley almost did him a favor here. If he had lived through that beating and not been crippled, his experience in prison would have been a nightmare. He would probably be targeted by the Sisters and further, because he probably wouldn't even stand up for himself like Andy did, he would be extorted. Whatever money he had on his books, he would be made to "pay rent". And if it wasn't enough, well, his family had better cough it up. Long story short is his existence would have been so fucking miserable that he would kill himself. Or, he would be dumb enough to snitch on the people giving him a hard time and he would be killed.

Captain Hadley got away with Manslaughter and felonious assault here and so many other crimes inside the Shawshank prison, he was the worst criminal there.

Because of this scene, whenever someone new gets hired at my theater, I’m always referring to them as “Fresh Fish” to other older co-workers and not once has someone gotten the reference... yet.
Underrated moment here is when his neighbour who seconds earlier had been tormenting him with the others murmurs “shut up man... shut up” with a haunted look on his face as the guy pleads with Hadley. He knows what happens to people who annoy Hadley. The look on his face suggests that he’s been on the receiving end of one of Hadley’s beatings himself.
Toby Langlois Yea, but that is how it probably works around in prisons. Inmates trying to break newcomers because they don't have anything else going for them. Not only that but the guy who told him to shut up was also trying to break him because he would win cigarettes if he predicted that the fat guy would have a breakdown first out of the newcomers. The inmates didn't expect him to actually cry and talk in front of the prison guards because they all know even newcomers that it can get you in trouble.
I think that because of Hadley’s scary personality, they probably assumed that Fat Ass would’ve shut up when Hadley came. Thus, preventing the beating. But because Fat Ass didn’t shut up, Hadley beat him to death and they were shocked

This is the only movie that has confused me on whether lines were scripted or if it was extras shouting out random lines, and the main characters going with it.
He never. Made. A sound. There's something about that line that was so calming and reassuring. Kinda like a foreshadoing of how Andy will handle himself throughout the rest of the movie

I get being terrified your first night in prison, but you should have some sort of survival instinct that tells you when to shut the fuck up and not draw attention to yourself
This entire scene was done with only 12 actors playing prisoner extras. yet because of the sound mixing, it sounds like 120... great film.

They're as dangerous as the prisoners, if not more. But I suppose you need those kind of people if they are to deal with some of the most dangerous men who are currently living. I don't know how some people rape and murder and feel that it is okay.
I get why Prison Guards beat up inmates sometimes but Hadley shouldn't have beaten up the fat guy just for being scared and crying out in fear. He should've just chucked him into solitary confinement for creating a disturbance or something.

I like that in a way, this scene comes full circle. Hadley beats a prisoner for sobbing controllably from fear, then years later he himself gets his comuppence and is imprisoned/ executed, and like the poor guy he beat to death, finally feels the same fear, sobbing uncontrollably as Red mentions.
The movie never said Hadley was executed. How did you come across that?? I would even say we don't know if Hadley would do time because there would have to be proof and witnesses testify against him.

Having been to prison myself, here's my thoughts on the fat guy. One, I firmly believe he was either a case of mistaken identity through a lineup, or he unwittingly took the fall for someone else, got framed, etc. based on his insistence that there was a "mistake" , he's "not supposed to be" there, "not me", etc. I mean sure Red had the running joke with everybody that they were all innocent, but you get the feeling with the fat guy that he legit got railroaded in some form. In my experience it's extremely rare that such a spineless blubbering amoeba would go out and commit crimes in the first place - someone like that would just be too scared of getting caught.
Two, Hadley almost did him a favor here. If he had lived through that beating and not been crippled, his experience in prison would have been a nightmare. He would probably be targeted by the Sisters and further, because he probably wouldn't even stand up for himself like Andy did, he would be extorted. Whatever money he had on his books, he would be made to "pay rent". And if it wasn't enough, well, his family had better cough it up.
Long story short is his existence would have been so fucking miserable that he would kill himself. Or, he would be dumb enough to snitch on the people giving him a hard time and he would be killed.
Tragic but true.

Underrated moment here is when his neighbour who seconds earlier had been tormenting him with the others murmurs “shut up man... shut up” with a haunted look on his face as the guy pleads with Hadley. He knows what happens to people who annoy Hadley. The look on his face suggests that he’s been on the receiving end of one of Hadley’s beatings himself.
I like how all the other prisoners are upset once the beating starts but if not for their " hazing " none of this would have happend.
Toby Langlois Yea, but that is how it probably works around in prisons. Inmates trying to break newcomers because they don't have anything else going for them. Not only that but the guy who told him to shut up was also trying to break him because he would win cigarettes if he predicted that the fat guy would have a breakdown first out of the newcomers. The inmates didn't expect him to actually cry and talk in front of the prison guards because they all know even newcomers that it can get you in trouble.
I think that because of Hadley’s scary personality, they probably assumed that Fat Ass would’ve shut up when Hadley came. Thus, preventing the beating. But because Fat Ass didn’t shut up, Hadley beat him to death and they were shocked

I think he must be mentally off or something, the guards can't do shit about getting you out even if they wanted to, and Hadley pretty obviously wasn't a sympathetic ear and flat out told him he was going to beat the shit out of him if he didn't shut up. I get being terrified your first night in prison, but you should have some sort of survival instinct that tells you when to shut the fuck up and not draw attention to yourself
Every strike from the Captain's baton made me wince. That kick to the head was the icing on the cake. Brilliant acting.
