Was he praising the Warden, or warning the warden? “Keep watch because you dont know when the master of the house is coming”; obviously the warden thinks Andy is saying “stay on your toes because you never know when the Warden will show up.” What Andy really is saying is “Watch out, I am in charge here, and when I want to, I will bring this whole place down.” Warden cannot fathom a prisoner is the one who is actually in charge. But as Andy is innocent and literally everyone else is a criminal, Andy is the actual Master of the house. As the movie progresses Andy set the Warden up to go to jail, and walk out with the Wardens money.
I personally don't think he hid the pick inside the bible. It just makes so much more sense to hide it behind the poster, and Andy was so much smarter than any of us. I feel he purposely carved that pick slot in the bible when putting it in the safe, purely because of the "salvation is within" line. A deep irony.
I saw someone else comment that the reason why he probably kept it in the bible is that on the off chance they did find the hole , he would still have the pick axe to try again with.
But he would have needed a place to hide it before he started digging the hole. He couldn't hide it behind the poster before the hole existed and his cell would have been searched before he started.

This is one of the all time great movies. Everybody gets what they deserve in the end (Samuel Norton, Byron Hadley, Andy Dufrense) and justice is served. The Biblical principle of reaping and sowing in action. Something Mr. Norton forgot about.
That music that plays when Norton hands Andy the Bible back.. I wish they included it in the soundtrack. Even if you're having a bad day Thomas Newman music can lift your spirits.
found this comment while looking at indiana jones music: The "Grail Theme motif" is copied note for note, and is used twice by composer Thomas Newman in the movie The Shawshank Redemption. The first instance is at the end of the scene where Warden Norton supervises the guards tossing Andy's cell. The Warden leaves the cell with Andy's Bible, and the theme plays when the warden hands the Bible back to Andy and says "Salvation is found within." The second instance of the theme is when Andy is in the Warden's office, and sees the sign hanging on the wall that says "His judgment cometh and that right soon."
This scene has such a different meaning on second viewing. Andy is fearful, but not for the reasons the warden thinks. "Almost forgot. Hate to deprive you of this, salvation lies within". And in his blind arrogance, he hands him back his salvation, both figuratively and literally. Such great writing.
The master of the house line has so many meanings. It could be interpreted as Andy must beware of his tunnelling because he does not know when the warden or his guards might show up. It can also be meant as subtle threat to be warden as Andy knows what he’s doing and to treat him with civility or he’ll expose his secrets after he escapes. The salvation lies within line could mean the rock hammer inside the bible but also the hope that compels andys desire to escape, his reminders of the outside world such as the music and the beer. I like the think that’s what compelled Andy do both of those things
"salvation lies within" Andy when talking about music: "it's in here (head), and in here (heart). They can't get that. Haven't you ever felt that way about music? You need it so you don't forget. That there are places in the world not made of stone. That there's something inside that they can't get to, that they can't touch. That's yours."
A Memorable Scene in a Very Memorable and Remarkable Film. You may want to consider calling it the "Salvation Lies Within" or the "Salvation" Scene. Most Folks will know what it means. Thanks for Sharing
Just realised Andy's 'favourite' passage actually mirrored the scene... 'Watch therefore, for ye know now when the master of the house cometh'... after Red told him about the surprise inspections, he was just waiting for the warden to come. If he hadn't read any passages from the bible, the warden upon testing him may have opened the bible to read from it. Salvation truly lay within.
@Indian Nayak This is how. Imagine you had never seen this movie before. Would you have any clue how tense you should be, knowing what you know now, watching it?
Its sick how someway, somehow, I was thankful that the Captain came into the cell and brought the warden in... and the viewer got the innuendo that the Captain briefed the Warden on Andys skills. I felt as a viewer, as if the Captain was a hero for a moment and kept Andy safe.
Translation Andy: Watch and make sure the Warden isn't there when you're hiding shit in your bible Warden: I am the boss here. Do as I say and we won't have any problems.
YES!!! i had this exact thought years ago ... you would obviously put the hammer in the hole because if the hole gets discovered, you're screwed anyway. the hammer in the bible makes for the nice ironic twist of 'salvation lies within' though similarly, andy would never wear the warden's shoes to his cell on his last night. it's incredibly risky because if any guard or inmate looked at his shoes for a moment and called him out on it, his entire scheme would likely be foiled after 17 years of effort. instead, he would save up a few bucks over the years, and buy a cheap pair of shoes the morning after escaping. much smarter plan.
Salvation lies within was a huge factor early in this film, sometimes to defeat, your enemy is to get close to your enemy and promise things, but never promise that one day you’ll take it all away
There is a lot of hidden meaning behind those passages: Andy: “Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh.” Prison Translation: I don’t know when you’re coming around for inspections so therefore I am careful and mindful. Warden: “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” Prison Translation: I control your destiny. Do as I say and I will help you in return. This was clearly an insight of what was to follow. The Warden is basically telling Andy that if he helps him, that he will help Andy in return.
Watching this the first time, this is just an ordinary scene of great dramatic quality between the main character and the antagonist. Watching this the second time it takes on a whole new extra dimension of suspense. Well acted and well written.
Loved the film and this scene. Dufresne was more astute, more patient than all the state penitentiary staff. Good Lord, have 21 years actually have passed by already? -DLM
I love the bible Readings they are both very passive aggressive. Andy saying I gotta watch out Because I don't know when you are coming. And the Warden saying that if you listen to him everything will be fine. Also of course "Salvation lies within". Every line of every scene of this movie has a purpose, which is why it is one of my all time favorite films
When I first learned that Clancy Brown voiced Mr. Crabs in spongebob, I was shocked. I mean, here's an actor who practacly played a bad guy on almost every movie I've seen so far. Talk about irony.
Andy had a close call, here. He already got the rock hammer earlier in the movie and he may have already carved out the hole in the Bible to hide it. :)
i don't know...i'm thinking there was no reason to hide the hammer in the bible until the end. if they find the hole, he's screwed anyway. why create 2 places to get himself caught?
Captains don't normally do cell searches and Wardens don't usually watch over the search. That's a lowly bottom rung guard's job. The highest rank I've ever seen enter a cell was a sergeant.
"The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which." George Orwell.
The way they used the Bible to depict one another. Beware of the master always be on guard. Then the warden whose so consumed within himself believed he ruled the world. That’s why this is my favorite movie.
I like the fact that Andy knew the bible verses off by heart, just from the numbers. The fact that he (must have) memorized the bible ahead of time hints at what a goody-two-shoes he was before he went to jail.
Salvation truly lies within the pages of God’s word. Escape from the prison that is this world. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.” John 3:16-18
- Pleased to see you reading this (Bible). Any favorite passages? - "Watch ye, therefore, for ye know not... ...when the master of the house cometh." Mark 13 35. - I've always liked that one.- But I prefer... ..."I am the light of the world. Ye that followeth me shall have the light of life." - John, chapter 8, verse 12.
Favorite passage? “Ye not know when the master of the house commith” saying you’re the master of the jail and I had no idea you were coming to my cell got dammit.
First watching it, I found it a little weird that Andy was quoting the Gospels but only had his book open to Genesis. But I didn't think anything of it, until rewatching it of course
For this of you who don't notice, when Andy says his passage, it's referring to the warden "master". For Andy has to watch out for him at all times while digging.

"salvation lies within"
Andy when talking about music: "it's in here (head), and in here (heart).
John Chapter 8 Verse 12"I am the light of the world whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life"
Just realised Andy's 'favourite' passage actually mirrored the scene... 'Watch therefore, for ye know now when the master of the house cometh'... after Red told him about the surprise inspections, he was just waiting for the warden to come. If he hadn't read any passages from the bible, the warden upon testing him may have opened the bible to read from it. Salvation truly lay within.
If Mr. Krabs were inspecting Andy’s cell he’d try to look for hidden money
Every time I watch this, I pick up something new.
2:25 "I'd hate to deprive you of this, salvation lies within"
My word. You weren't wrong 🤣
“watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh”
MY GUY EVEN GAVE HIM A HINT 😎
I love how the best films are all from the 90s pre 2000s. Better acting , better scripts, better music.
The misdirection here is brilliant.
Brilliant.
idiot
@Indian Nayak This is how. Imagine you had never seen this movie before. Would you have any clue how tense you should be, knowing what you know now, watching it?
The acting and attention to detail were incredible in this movie. Absolutely timeless movie!!!!
This scene was BEFORE he up and vanished like a fart in the wind.
Wbo else noticed when the warden opened the Bible and it opened to the book of Exodus? Fantastic!
Its sick how someway, somehow, I was thankful that the Captain came into the cell and brought the warden in... and the viewer got the innuendo that the Captain briefed the Warden on Andys skills. I felt as a viewer, as if the Captain was a hero for a moment and kept Andy safe.
This is a really great movie I watch over and over ... beautiful!
The same !
Translation
Andy: Watch and make sure the Warden isn't there when you're hiding shit in your bible
Warden: I am the boss here. Do as I say and we won't have any problems.
‘Salvation lies within’, Love It!
Hmmm. The warden didn't notice that Bible was a little heavy?
We do not really know what the weight ratio is, maybe all those pages ripped out weighs as much? I have no idea really.
He may have left the hammer behind the poster, instead of putting it back in the bible?
YES!!! i had this exact thought years ago ... you would obviously put the hammer in the hole because if the hole gets discovered, you're screwed anyway. the hammer in the bible makes for the nice ironic twist of 'salvation lies within' though
similarly, andy would never wear the warden's shoes to his cell on his last night. it's incredibly risky because if any guard or inmate looked at his shoes for a moment and called him out on it, his entire scheme would likely be foiled after 17 years of effort. instead, he would save up a few bucks over the years, and buy a cheap pair of shoes the morning after escaping. much smarter plan.
Well, the bible has always been a little padded out. ;)
It's a movie based on a book written by a drunken hack you fucking morons.
Salvation lies within was a huge factor early in this film, sometimes to defeat, your enemy is to get close to your enemy and promise things, but never promise that one day you’ll take it all away
Most rewatchable movie of all time.
There is a lot of hidden meaning behind those passages:
Andy: “Watch ye therefore: for ye know not when the master of the house cometh.”
Prison Translation: I don’t know when you’re coming around for inspections so therefore I am careful and mindful.
Warden: “I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
Prison Translation: I control your destiny. Do as I say and I will help you in return.
This was clearly an insight of what was to follow. The Warden is basically telling Andy that if he helps him, that he will help Andy in return.
Bob Gunton---great actor and a great man.
-DLM
Tossing the cells is just an excuse. The truth is... I have watched this movie at least 5 times and still enjoyed it each time.
"rips down the poster"
And just like that, Andy Dufrane was gone......
''salvation lies within'' had never been truer
Andy had a close call, here. He already got the rock hammer earlier in the movie and he may have already carved out the hole in the Bible to hide it. :)
he most likely had already carved it out.
That's why this scene like most of the movie is just priceless.
many people probably don't think about this but Andy couldn't escape without being on the far cell so he wouldn't dig into another cell.
YoMama Skillet iv though of that many time
i don't know...i'm thinking there was no reason to hide the hammer in the bible until the end. if they find the hole, he's screwed anyway. why create 2 places to get himself caught?
truly one of the scenes of all time.
Captains don't normally do cell searches and Wardens don't usually watch over the search. That's a lowly bottom rung guard's job. The highest rank I've ever seen enter a cell was a sergeant.
"The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which."
George Orwell.
I shudder to think what would have happened if Norton had discovered what Raquel was hiding...
The way they used the Bible to depict one another. Beware of the master always be on guard. Then the warden whose so consumed within himself believed he ruled the world. That’s why this is my favorite movie.
Fun fact: the theme that kicks in at 2:32 is the same used in Indiana Jones and the last crusade. Same composer
By far one on my favorite movies of all time, Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman absolutely killed their roles
Most intense scene and we didn’t even know it yet
I like the fact that Andy knew the bible verses off by heart, just from the numbers. The fact that he (must have) memorized the bible ahead of time hints at what a goody-two-shoes he was before he went to jail.
2:30
Warden: “Salvation lies within”
Andy: “Literally”
Salvation truly lies within the pages of God’s word. Escape from the prison that is this world.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”
John 3:16-18
0:08 Andy thinking “I like that rock hammer, that is a nice rock hammer”
Do you know what I love?
"For ye not know when the master of the house cometh" -> they were tossing the cells! That's so funny.
- Pleased to see you reading this (Bible). Any favorite passages?
- "Watch ye, therefore, for ye know not... ...when the master of the house cometh." Mark 13 35.
- I've always liked that one.- But I prefer... ..."I am the light of the world. Ye that followeth me shall have the light of life."
- John, chapter 8, verse 12.
Thanks for repeating it I didn't hear it the first time
Salvation lies within
Absolutely right
“Salvation lies within.”
Little did he know...
Never get sick of this movie
0:23-0:27, 1:04- 1:07, 1:15-1:23 and 2:30. That's an awful lot of foreshadowing.
What a great movie. The story was superb. And the acting amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Get Andy in a poker tournament. He’d bluff anyone... along with that ace in his bible
The casting of this film was near-perfect
In 1:05 when Warden and Andy are talking about the bible, it just totally made me think of two nerds talking about a sci fi game or something idek
Why is that weird?
Harry Drake The Gospels are clear on the other side of the book. You know, the pages that he had to ear up to fit his hammer in
You're asuming that this is the first time that Andy reads the book.
The hammer was hidden in the book of Exodus and was hiding that fact by reading from Genesis
For this of you who don't notice, when Andy says his passage, it's referring to the warden "master". For Andy has to watch out for him at all times while digging.
Salvation did lie within.
One of the best movies ever made cleverly put together
Maybe lower the sound a bit... I was still able to almost hear them speaking!
"Salvation lies within."
The hammer inside the Bible. What a hint! Even the language is figurative.
