You’re are very truly strongly amazing man!!! The more I see this, the more I find you and Otmaro above. Above and above... thank you my friend. Please, excuse my french.
Dude! Some major funkiness going on there! Rock-steady tempo, wide tone variation with different strokes, huge bottom on that kit and great punchy snare and cutting cymbals. And don't get me started on the snare fills ... Woo hoo!
@@jfender8023 post the video of you playing … If you knew were well versed in jazz you wouldn’t have made an asinine comment like you just did . All the jazz greats Coltrane … Parker …. Grover Washington… Joe Zawinul …. Miles etc played outta key 🔑. I believe it’s called dissonance look 👀 it up and educate yourself .
Nonesense 'Side-slipping' or side-stepping are methods of playing outside. In one version, one plays only the five "'wrong'" non-scale notes for the given chord and none of the seven scale or three to four chord tones, given that there are twelve notes in the equal tempered scale and heptatonic scales are generally used. Another technique described as sideslipping is the addition of distant ii-V relationships, such as a half-step above the original ii-V. This increases chromatic tension as it first moves away and then towards the tonic.Lastly, side-slipping can be described as playing in a scale a half-step above or below a given chord, before resolving, creating tension and release. This video is none of that! btw Dissonance is the term used to describe musical sounds that build tension. In Western music, dissonant CHORDS involve dissonant intervals. Dissonant intervals include the major and minor second, the major and minor seventh, as well as tritones (any interval of three adjacent whole tones) and certain augmented or diminished intervals. Dissonant sounds demand resolution by a consonant interval, again this solo was none of that!
Herbie Hancock gave the world This, Watermelon Man, Canteloup Island, and said... THERE YOU GO, TAKE IT, HAVE HAS MUCH FUN AS YOU WANT BUT BRING IT BACK BEFORE YOU FINISH.
Grant Geisman's solo is SO good on this! It's like he can make any notes fit... then he tops it off with some sweet slide playing. His playing throughout is impeccable....with those sustained note fills he uses later, and his little funky chord jabs. Seems all off the top too!
I just can't get enough of it I'm a jazz/blues musician as well but you guys are just so groovy all of you have perfect time and you guys have perfect solo ideas musically and rhythmically good job!
Total respect! Not only can these cats throw down a nasty groove, but they've done their homework. During Ruiz's keyboard solo, he and Jervonny truly reflect the soul of the Headhunters' original. Super stuff!
That's Grant Geissman. He played with Chuck Mangione for yrs. One of my guitar heros from HS! His soloing is a bit harsh at times but man, great rhythm and fills! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grant_Geissman
Can anyone tell me what are the cords that the keyboard player uses during his solo? To me they seem; A7sus, Db7 sus, Ab7maj, Db7/ 9. Sorry for my english. Thanks Maurizio
Cookin' like a Michelin-starred restaurant. Man, that's some good eatin'! Thank you to all involved for this tasty repast. I just this week discovered the Studio Jams channel, but I have a feeling I'm going to be a regular customer.
Whew Grant Geisman on guitar. A legend. His playin makes me "Feel So Good" Sorry I could not resist. On top of my favorite pickers list for sure. All these cats are top notch studio sausages!
What a groove! with a fantastic sound! (the drums are just fine, thanks to Gary Stanionis... and the sound engineer, very nice snare!). I love the feel of the whole band, who gives honour to Hancock's chameleon with a new taste. Indeed, Otmaro Ruiz solo (kb) (nice harmonic progression in a jazzy funk spirit) with Jervonny Collier (b) puts us in the groove and sound of the seventies, it's outstanding! What love (or a musical orgasm) deeply is: each one taking pleasure with others to reach, touch and go over the limit: then Ruiz's (tapping chordings) and Geissman's (bend loop embellishing voicings) way to support Elan trotman's big uprising sax solo yields an overwhelming effect! Waoouuuhhhh boooooommmm booooooommmm :)
J. Andrew De Guzman, So, the joke he made at Norman’s Rare Guitars went over your head, eh? Grant Geissman is the real deal. You don’t make more than ten albums and play with artists like Quincy Jones just knowing three riffs. It’s just the opposite. He made the joke because he’s a VERY capable musician who has nothing to prove. His bio is on Wikipedia.
I gotta see where this Otmaro Ruiz is workin' and what records he's on. This is like the 3rd jam i've heard him on and he's a CAT.... Dude is playing interesting-solid solos! And then his comping is the sh*t too. Oh, and then.... Jervonny Collier-Damn.... loved him in Bruce Hornsby's band, and STILL love his stuff. What feel!
Otmaro is on a live Jing Chi album with Robben Ford, Jimmy Haslip and Vinny Colaiuta. He is also on a good jam (on youtube) with Allen Hinds, Abe Laboriel doing The Chicken. He pops up here and there. His solos are always great.
People don’t realize how difficult it is to generate constant creative ideas like Grant (guitar) over seemingly easy almost static chord changes- I find creating great solos over simple funk more difficult than over more complex jazz progressions.
Give sax player some lovin' guys.
Elan is the real deal!!!
Oh that synth solo! Yess. 💯
An amazing group of cats to play with! Thanks Tom for including me! What fun!!!!

the guitarist ruined it with all that “out of key” nonsense

This is easily one of the best covers I’ve heard on this song
Grant Geissman is really amazing, such great licks.
There are literally no more notes left to play! These guys are in groove and cooking!! That was fun
Herbie Hancock gave the world This, Watermelon Man, Canteloup Island, and said... THERE YOU GO, TAKE IT, HAVE HAS MUCH FUN AS YOU WANT BUT BRING IT BACK BEFORE YOU FINISH.

yep it is (edited!)
Grant Geissman is ridiculous!!! Awesome solo. Great song

Funnily enough, I thought what he was doing under the sax solo was just as good, if not better!
for all of you guys complaining about the guitar solo, this is grant geissman the same guitarist who soloed on chuck mangione's tune feel so good!
+Joshua Han I love that record, just listened to it yesterday, to find him a day later here is amazing! my ears led me here.....
I never would have placed it but now that you say that, I hear it. He does those little mordent-type things a lot which were in the FSG solo as well.
Every single one of these instruments is pure audio porn, amazing to listen to.
Surething!
Yeah, the sound quality is awesome and the equalization is so well done
Ha,ha,ha,ha,audio porn🎶🎶🎶✊✊✊👍👍👍😆😅😄🤣🤣🤣🦅🦅🦅🎸🎸🎸🎶🎶🎶
Great to hear Grant G. Strech out on guitar. Havent heard much from him since his solo on "feel so. Good" by Chuck Mangione.

Wow what an electrifying guitar solo

AMAZING GUITAR SOLO, WOWWWWWWWW, AWESOME

the solo guitar is a copy of stratus ( billy coban ) and is poor and repeat and repeat ......no fresh and clean , no have peace ....is poor .
gado agreed.
Unmusical widdling crap. And truly dreadful slide.
That's Grant Geissman. He played with Chuck Mangione for yrs. One of my guitar heros from HS! His soloing is a bit harsh at times but man, great rhythm and fills!

Grant Geissman must have been saving that one up for a long time!
Well done, boys. Each one is a star.

Can anyone tell me what are the cords that the keyboard player uses during his solo? To me they seem; A7sus, Db7 sus, Ab7maj, Db7/ 9. Sorry for my english. Thanks Maurizio

Awesome! I love this tune and these guys 'nailed it'! As a guitarist I totally dig the tone grant gets from that beautiful Gibson guitar! Jam on!

I have been playing this for year, but starting at about 7:00,,,,, I really liked it. Sorry but I am going to copy.
That is the second part of Chameleon...... If you listen to the original vs you will hear these chord changes.........
Thanks for the love.......
Yes I have been playing this for about 20yrs. I prefer my 137 over my 335. I use a martin pedal with a polytone amp
You can tell the bass is good when it shakes the cymbals
F***ing amazing soloists all!
Great rendition!
I love those piano chords that start around 2:37
That shit was funky!

Cooking from first to last note! Standing Ovation in order
