Far out, man. Excellent visuals with groovy tunes. '73 is a few years before I started going to the races in late 70's as a teenager. Bob Hoover, Rare Bear before it got those eye popping paint job. Fantastic video!
The song has been changed to say "America Used to be The Beautiful". In 1972 I went to the Indy 500 Time Trials. As with the Reno Races, I could get "up close and personal". When it was Mario Andretti's turn for laps, I went down to the outside wall of the track between turn 1 and turn 2 to watch "the Andretti Line". I climbed onto the wall, inter-laced my fingers into the wire fence, and watched him come around. Mario would come down the main straight at over 200mph, stay low coming into turn 1, then drift out to the wall to set up entering turn 2. I was standing within 4 feet of his right rear wheel. His judgement of the drift was such that the inertia maintained his speed but in doing so, his right rear tire would come within one foot of the wall. It was astounding to watch ... and "nobody" came to tell me to get down from the wall. America has come so far "the wrong way". Today, there is an endless supply of millennials just poised to invoke their will on anyone doing anything. Personally ... I take every opportunity to piss them off, which is an easy and rewarding adventure. BTW ... that was the year Bobby Unser came within 3 mph of breaking the impossible 200mph average lap. We were all standing on our feet and screaming in support. I'm praying November 5th will provide Americans the opportunity to rejoin the greatness we once were.
This footage is great! Do you by chance have any other vintage footage of the Reno Air Races? Im making a documentary and book series on my Grandfather Tom Cassutt, Designer/Builder/Pilot of the original Cassutt 111 Special I Sport/Racer and Cassutt Special II N11U Racet. I'm also looking for footage from the 2000 Races when Formula 1 flew him out to Reno to honor him. Thank you very much!
If I am not mistaken (it's been a while) I attended this air show with a Marine Corps Band that played ceremonial opening music for the event.
I hope you are not responsible for the irritating background noise. Sounds like a kindergarten band tuning up. Turn off the volume & enjoy the show.
As an Australian, I have never had the privilege to witness the Reno Races in person. Thanks for posting.
