It's a Mark IX Spitfire, not a Mark 1X.
It's neither, it's a replica
It’s so wonderful that America is so protective of the history of aviation, and not only its own. Full respect to the people who care to keep the planes in excellent condition, and thanks to America.. My full respect you, guys and Big Sub and like. Keep doing your great job
The song has been changed to say "America Used to be The Beautiful". In 1972 I went to the Indy 500 Time Trials. As with the Reno Races, I could get "up close and personal". When it was Mario Andretti's turn for laps, I went down to the outside wall of the track between turn 1 and turn 2 to watch "the Andretti Line". I climbed onto the wall, inter-laced my fingers into the wire fence, and watched him come around. Mario would come down the main straight at over 200mph, stay low coming into turn 1, then drift out to the wall to set up entering turn 2. I was standing within 4 feet of his right rear wheel. His judgement of the drift was such that the inertia maintained his speed but in doing so, his right rear tire would come within one foot of the wall. It was astounding to watch ... and "nobody" came to tell me to get down from the wall. America has come so far "the wrong way". Today, there is an endless supply of millennials just poised to invoke their will on anyone doing anything. Personally ... I take every opportunity to piss them off, which is an easy and rewarding adventure. BTW ... that was the year Bobby Unser came within 3 mph of breaking the impossible 200mph average lap. We were all standing on our feet and screaming in support. I'm praying November 5th will provide Americans the opportunity to rejoin the greatness we once were.
This footage is great! Do you by chance have any other vintage footage of the Reno Air Races? Im making a documentary and book series on my Grandfather Tom Cassutt, Designer/Builder/Pilot of the original Cassutt 111 Special I Sport/Racer and Cassutt Special II N11U Racet. I'm also looking for footage from the 2000 Races when Formula 1 flew him out to Reno to honor him. Thank you very much!
What a stunning plane, I listened to the whole video it gave me goosebumps. I would've risked my life to fly in one.
It’s a shame we have to listen to the music instead of the airplane engines .
When America was AMERICA!!!! before it become a nation of political correctness and homosexuals , transgenders and clowns and censorship fuckery.
Great audio visuals
Thanks for sharing, presumably taken over a number of years.
I built all those planes
Ahhhhhh ... And you're a Vietnam Veteran And you invented the Atomic Bomb And ...........
Thanks for sharing this!
Far out, man. Excellent visuals with groovy tunes. '73 is a few years before I started going to the races in late 70's as a teenager. Bob Hoover, Rare Bear before it got those eye popping paint job. Fantastic video!
As an Australian, I have never had the privilege to witness the Reno Races in person. Thanks for posting.
I'm likely there somewhere, but in a stroller. ;-)
Bahahahahaha ...
If I am not mistaken (it's been a while) I attended this air show with a Marine Corps Band that played ceremonial opening music for the event.
I hope you are not responsible for the irritating background noise. Sounds like a kindergarten band tuning up. Turn off the volume & enjoy the show.
Nice, Juan Brown doing the announcing!
A relative of mine was shot down over Rabaul in 1943 in Corsair Bu. 17806. Pretty cool to see one of these still flying.
And 99.5% of people seeing that plane would not know it was a replica with an ALLISON engine, and NOT a "REAL" Shitfire !!!
I suspected I'd find Snorting Traitor on this video, and here you are.
That pilot is very experienced, but he is flying very near to the edge. I hope he will fly long, not only great.
Pale green went with green & brown uppers.
Alison ??? Packard Merlin ! Get it right
Incredible footage! Thanks for sharing Mike
Is the announcer Jaun Brown? Sure sounds like him!
P-51B through P-51D etc had Rolls-Royce Merlin V-12 engines. Only A models had the Allison engines
Love that turboprop conversion, real cool.
There were never any 7AC Citabrias. First Citabtias were 7ECA's. All 7AC's are Champs. Aeronca never built Citabtias. Beautiful plane!!
Correct. And "Citabria" is Airbatic spelled backwards.
I would love to see the P39 done up like this.....
"Suddenly it's 1945"
What do you normally cruise at? 80mph?
Excellent! Love your champ!
I have going to an Airshow on my list. Wise powerful people of this world forbid war ever repeats. But these planes are so iconic. The more I learn about British RAF altogether, the more I love it.
P51 Mustang had a RR Merlin….
I think I'd put a Steve Morris built LS based big block Pro charged engine and one of these. For the right price he would build you a V 12
Is a Thunder Mustang roughly the same size and dimensions as a "P-51 Mustang"?
no its 3\4 size
No.
The Mitchell B-25,second most beautiful aircraft of it era, just behind the P-38 Lightning!
That announcer sure sounds a lot like Juan Browne.
I do believe it is Juan. It sounds exactly like him especially when he gets excited about the plane.
Definitely blancolirio. Mr Juan as that is Nevada County airfield.
I do not believe WACO means Weaver Aircraft Company of Ohio. The name comes from "W"eaver "A"ircraft "CO"mpany.
Lovely 3 pointer at the end!
Hey Mr. Announcer - the engine in the Mustang was a Rolls Royce Merlin, NOT the Allison which gave poor performance in the VERY early versions.
The engine in the P51-A "was" the V-12 Allison. The plane was not accepted by the US due to lack of high-altitude performance but was sold to the British who were woefully depleted of fighters. It was the British who saved the P51 by (on their own) replacing the Allison with the Rolls-Griffon V-12. With that modification, and the ability of the British to produce the Rolls-Griffon for export to the US (subsequently for the US to produce the Rolls-Merlin on contract). Also, pull up the PIC of a P51-A, you will see it was a "razorback" configuration. It was the British who modified the Spitfire Canopy for use on the P51 (I saw one at the Olympia, WA airshow a few years ago, with no doubt it was a Spitfire Canopy). Once North American Aviation saw the reconfigured canopy, a redesign occurred to the P-51D with the canopy you see today. ALSO ... just for sport. The Corsair F4U was designed as a US Navy fighter, which had extraordinary performance and was air cooled. Unfortunately, freshly trained American pilots could not land the plane on carriers and piled up more in training accidents than in combat losses. Again, the plane was sold to the British who developed an approach pattern that allowed the pilot to see over the nose and safely land on carriers. With flight consultation by the British pilots, the Chance Vought F4U Corsair was again applied to US Carrier use (versus land-only use that it had been relegated to). The Corsair went on to become one of the great American Fighters of WWII. Major Greg Boyington, USMC (Cour d'Alene, Idaho) became a multi-ace in the plane in the South Pacific Theater.
REPLICA with an Allison engine! Beautifully made and an incredible effort.
Thank you; I have a picture of this on my wall and I wanted to learn more about her. She’s beautiful. The picture is of her right side, so when I saw the left side, I was thrown off. All this time I hadn’t even noticed she had that racing stripe on her nose! 🤣 Thanks for sharing.
stud pilot
Even the hydraulics on the inner doors mimic the real plane. They only close when the engine is running, and open when the engine shuts off.
The Cub has the legendary status, but the Champ is more comfortable airport hopper.
Um the Alison was dumped for the RR Merlin by the time of the P51D mate
The Merlin was licensed built by Allison
My mistake, Packard built them on license
Flew in this very Howard from Albuquerque, NM to Wichita, KS when Capt. Clayton Graves owned it. Loved that flight and what a one of a kind guy Clay was. One of my fondest memories as a teenager so many moons ago.
Great visuals - crappy soundtrack.
Man I want one so freaking bad.
Me to. At the very end of the video the sound effect they added of the aircraft doing a flyby sounds awesome! I don't know what it is but it sounds good!
