  • On the night of February 17, 2017, a top female actor in Kerala was kidnapped and sexually assaulted by six hired criminals. Dileep, a superstar actor in Kerala, is alleged to have masterminded the night. The crime initiated in Kerala a Weinstein-scale movement that predated the global #MeToo movement.
In our 11-chapter saga, The News Minute looks at how one night pushed Kerala to the edge, almost to the cusp of a much needed change. Yet, the women did not get the coverage that their counterparts in the West got. Even in India, those outside Kerala knew little about the extent of the rot.
In this conversation, Dhanya Rajendran and Nidhi Suresh talk about what exactly happened, why the case did not get the coverage it deserved, and the process of reporting on this case.

it is the actress and procecution who were delaying the trial by giving other cases in other courts and asking for more time.. Dileep wants to complete the trial as quickly as possible..
Nov 2019: The trial in the case began, however, it is stopped after the actress approached the High Court seeking a transfer of the trial to another court. It was alleged that the trial court judge was biased throughout the trial. The actress reportedly asked for a woman judge.

Nov 23, 2020: The Kerala HC rejected the actress's petition. Following this development, Special Public Prosecutor stepped down and criticised trial judge for being biased.
Dec 2, 2020: Kerala government approached Supreme Court requesting the judge to be changed.
Dec 15, 2020: The Supreme Court rejected the Kerala government’s appeal.
Dec 25, 2021: Just when the trial was nearing an end, Dileep's former friend director Balachandra Kumar made several explosive allegations against the actor.
Jan 5, 2022: In light of the recent developments in the case, the Kerala government approached Supreme Court seeking a six-month extension to finish the trial. The trial court asked for the further probe to be completed by January 20.
24 Jan 2022... Supreme court turns down Kerala plea to extend time in Dileep trial completion | Delhi ... - The Supreme Court on Monday turned down Kerala government's plea to extend the time for completion of trial in the actress abduction case.
24 Jan 2022... State playing a 'mischievous game' to delay trial, actor Dileep tells Supreme ... - Accusation against State came even as court refused to entertain plea by Kerala for six-month extension to complete trial.

The Dileep case has left Malayalees deeply divided, but one thing is clear: we all stand firmly with the survivor. As deeply emotional and intelligent people, Malayalees demand justice and express frustration over the legal delays and perceived manipulations. Many believe that Dileep is using his influence in the film industry to tamper with evidence and intimidate witnesses. Despite the complexities and challenges of the case, the unwavering support for the survivor reflects our broader societal concern for justice and integrity in the judicial process.

I am also fan of this on screen couple. They worked together 19,20 movies as a hero and heroine. When dileep and kavya wedding , dileep invited entire media to prove that there marriage is naturally happened. I have stopped watching his movies. We can still see some paid comments where some heartless faceless ruthless comments that it is still not proved whether such a harrasment has taken place or like its a conspiracy to bring that actor down. But whoever followed the case from the beginning has clearly understood that he is the culprit. The way he manipulated the judiciary, the Malayalam film industry through every possible way and the way he tampered the evidence (even which was in "safe" custody) through hook and crook. The way his paid PR team harassed n tortured the actress and whoever stood for her and justice. The way there was no cctv of that particular day in Lakshya n the register missing and then burning down Lakshya, the judge giving verdicts in favour of him, a retired ips officer giving spl privileges for him even when he was in jail. The witnesses, the audio recordings everything evidently shows that he is the masterbrain behind this unbelievably ruthless crime!!!

This is precisely why I don't agree with the idea of referring to victims as 'survivors'. It's up to the victim to decide if she has survived it or not . We shouldn't pressure victims to present themselves as survivors so that the rest of us feel less uncomfortable about these crimes. If the things that are said about this actress even now are anything to go by, the smear campaign against her in which even senior lawyers were involved; she can't have survived it. She's gaslit and sl_ shamed every day. Secondly victimhood and survivorhood aren't mutually exclusive. Even if you have somehow managed to get past the trauma of such an act of assault ; the likelihood of which is way too low, you're still a victim. A crime was committed against you. Being a victim should not be something to be ashamed of ; something that generates pity. It's NOT easy to be a victim and to continue to live with the trauma ;-it takes a hell lot of bravery.

Kudos to Newslaundary and News minute for re-narrating this story. Not the pettan fans association committee commenting here saying how innocent he is. Of course, he is so innocent that he can literally afford a lawyer and make his own brother say that how his first wife was a drunkard. And he is so innocent that he married an actress to show off what kind of a big person he is to accept a person whose life is ruined because of him in front of media (I remember how much media coverage happened for his wedding with another actress). Just because that court proving a person is innocent or not is the reason why you are siding him then remember this case also where one teenager literally killed two people in a bike with his sports car and how the teenager escaped the punishment. That’s what he is capable of, twisting the narrative and making himself look so innocent as if nothing happened.

No offense to wcc, but there is no icc in 99% of movies being shot even rn, in spite of there being a law. A friend who's been part of 50+ movies since 2017 has seen the icc in only one movie set. The actual fallout has been that films employ even less women now, save for tokenism. This had been in conversation earlier this year when it was seen that most hit mal movies didn't even have heroines.
On the other hand are actors like srijith ravi who was booked, TWICE, for child SA but are still increasingly cast in movies, including those with children. The rot runs deep. It's as if the pervs work hard to ensure that only enablers and abusers form the majority in the industry.
It is probably reflective of the malayalee society itself.
The irony is to see biggies from other industries praise the malayalam industry and society as some kind of progressive heaven that could do no wrong. If only they keenly watched news from Kerala instead of just movies.

During the period from 16-03-2022 till 14-04-2022, the survivor was not under any form of confinement...
The applicant and the survivor have been communicating with each other through WhatsApp and Instagram consistently and in plenty and the available messages (from 31-03-2022 to 17-04-2022) conveyed an intense relationship between them; further those communications did not refer to any instances of sexual assault.
While the applicant deleted the messages from 16-03-2022 till 30-03-2022 from his phones, the survivor also deleted all messages between them, for the entire period in question.
Applicant had already been questioned for 38 hours and he had handed over his mobile phones to the investigating officer.

The supreme court bench said that police can very well retrieve those messages and moreover it appears that the victim has also deleted those messages, which shows some kind of understanding between them.. However, on the issue of tampering evidence, the Bench was of the view that since the Police has his mobile, they can retrieve it. It added, "Both (Vijay Babu and the victim) had deleted the messages so there was some mutual understanding."..
Advocate then argued that in the instant case, Presumption as to absence of consent in prosecutions for rape under Section 114A of the Indian Evidence Act would apply.
Expressing its disagreement, the Bench asked,... "Can there be presumption when there is admitted intimate relationship and promise to marry, where the respondent was already a married man and he was not even free to marry?"...

Obviously like many others i stopped watching any of his movies. I merely loathe the sight of him even in YT shorts if i come across. I dont feel pitty on the Victim.. Am so proud of her for fighting her battles.

Who is the guy that misbehaved with Nidhi? The guy should be exposed, in my opinion. Thanks to the constant media attention and awareness around the case created, Dilip's acting career is now as good as over.
