Super interesting video. A good idea is to include checking if your wall is really closed, or if there is a tiny gap in it. To do so, you can take a villager and let it move behind your wall, to see if it is going through it.

It's a small thing but I had to laugh so hard at 22:54 - looks like you cycle through the hot keys of WONDER, COLLOSEUM, WATER TOWER, ARC DE TRIOMPHE to finally get to the archery range. I know it's possibly an editor thing but man was I confused for a second. Absolutely perfect educational video btw. Much love!

Very useful video. I reached 1400 peak with no full walls and I could never medium wall either. I only ever did resource walls and hoped I could reach castle age first and build tcs instead of walls to protect my resources.
I am using the same strategy and after castling first I attack all in😂
I’m around the same elo (1400, peek 1530) and usually I don’t full wall. But it happens that I get punished for this. Probably the solution is fully walling gradually, because in early castle age full walls are important e.g. vs knights

This sort of video just really speaks to the high degree of RNG in this game. Having a bad map literally put him behind 150 wood. 150 wood! That's like a civ eco bonus!
Further, even after walling he wasn't actually safe! Both golds exposed to archer harassment. To wall such that archers wouldn't be able to hit his golds it would have cost even more!
This is why you have to decide whether it's even worth it to wall. On those very open maps, just making military/a defensive tower can be better.
I need a video like this on countering castle drops.

0:30 this is what happened to me everytime, so now i don't wall my base anymore. my opponent walls, that way he falls behind xD I go for resource walls, and towers if needed.
i too do not wall completely, or i notice when i wall i tend to lose. if i do wall, i leave huuuge gaps so i don't have to mind the gates and shit
@@twdsmaguns Yeah it's a big choice to make! i rarely leave gaps when walling, but i find i have no resources left to build army ;_; i build the barracks, build the archery range and that's it, 0 wood left! By this point the enemy is coming over with scouts or archers, and i'm just sitting there like an idiot.
After this point what usually happens is: The enemy sees that he will not get in, so he stops army production and goes to Castle Age instead. Then starts making knights and builds a forward siege workshop and makes mangonels. This happens a lot.
Now i don't wall at all, maybe just a few tiles to wall the resources. i tend to go for archers 90% of the time, by not walling i can build 2 archery ranges and make archers right away! So with no walls to defend, i have army, which is much better than having walls and no army xD If need be i'll drop a tower or two, no problem.
How do I make it so my map spawns with resources at the back and many woodlines? Viper seems to have a way to do that.
For those of you who intend to use terrain to wall, do be careful that you check it with a palisade wall or other building first. Once when playing Arabia, I once thought I walled to the left and skipped a section with a cactus, only to find out that the cactus was a decorative tree and not an actual tree, allowing my opponent's scouts to come into my base and do damage. While I did win the game afterwards, I was slowed down significantly in feudal age so do check the walls beforehand.

Good to see you keeping up with new content. It's nice to watch something other than the same old caster who you know is going to say the same thing over and over in every video.
The main reason we don't see as much of this kind of content is that it takes a long time to produce. I'm pretty sure this video took me around 50 hours to make.

4:00 switch from partly palisades to buildings
There will always be a hole somewhere in my walls. No matter where I build the walls. Right next to a building, next to Woodline, wherever there's a hidden spot that's open somewhere. I'm used to it.
Something people should sometimes consider is, often you can take dramatically more of the map with minuscule increase in resource investment. For example, on an arabia map I just generated, I could cover half my base with 34 palisades, or I could take literally half the map with 39.
One of the major issues with this is that you can't wall behind walls that are too far away. Walling too big actually makes you less safe in many situations.
@@SurvivalistAoE Just as long as you don't end up having to place a dozen houses behind your walls as they send their scouts up and down.
If you can take a lot of the map with a few extra walls it's a perfect case for a few stone walls imo.

I am a old aoe 2 player and today i see that players tend to use more aggressive strategies in early game.
Super helpful! I have a question, why is that you wall only to near the town center? Is it that if you garrison you make that much of damage?
I mean if you have enough army you can pass below it and then you are in... Isn't it?
Archers die very fast to the tc fire, so you usually don't need to seal your base against them (assuming you can garrison in time). Against scouts they will just run past though.
By the time the archers player has enough army to run through your tc, you should either have army or be in castle age. You can also do emergency quick walls to prevent your opponent from leaving the tc fire, though this requires some quick thinking.
How do you break down your own Palisade wall to release your sheep, as in The "Emperor is Sleeping"?
You need to reach imperial age first to do that. Don’t ever click the wall and press the delete button though that doesn’t work at all
18:45 - What are some examples where 1 civ is (much) *better late game* than another? (maybe just 3-5 examples)
The examples I had in the video are Goths-Mayans, and Berbers=Mongols. You could also include Persians-Eagle Civs (no two handed swordsman). Any Good Infantry Civ-Goths is also somewhat true.
Dear Survivalist, I hope I can give you some constructive feedback. The font (I've only watched the first minute so far, maybe it will change later) is a bit hard to read for me on my smartphone. I'm not an expert on these things but maybe the font should be less playful or the contrast higher, maybe thicker borders. As always, thanks for the awesome video! I know it's gonna be good before even watching it :D
mmm I didn't consider phone screens. I'll make sure it's bigger and has a smaller outline to make it easier in the next one.

it sounds terrible but its actually my playstle haha ... my elo high is 1260 but usually am around 12! should i change my ways?
i do quick wall when scouts are about to hit / construct and delete gates to ward off archers and that kind of thing but in terms of the pre-emptive palisade wall thing i just dont do it. i dont see the value (cause it takes too much time let alone resources)
