Spirit of the Law's video was not about the best Hussar, it was solely about Hussar lines ability for raiding. While raising is a major part of the Hussar, it also often plays a critical role in the main battle, both as a meat shield for archers while gold is still available and in late game trash wars. Polish Hussars are worse at raiding than many others. But in straight up fights they are pretty much always better than other Hussars due to the trample damage. On top of that, the insane Polish farming eco definitely helps with Hussar spam.

In fights involving hussar vs hussar with ranged units as support, Magyar Huszar is better than Polish Winged Hussar given the last armor upgrade. In large scale melee fights without ranged units, they trade near evenly with a slight edge to Poles. Although needing castles is a drawback, Magyar Huszars are much cheaper (around 1k res) to fully upgrade. I’d put them Number 1 but unfortunately I’m not the hussar king :).
Agree, a little inconsistent not to give magyars #1, if to count their hussar+uu. Bonus vs siege is huge for trash unit. Poles w.hussars great in melee, not bad even vs halbs. But vs range they performs worse than generic hussars. Actually strenght of poles hussars in numbers, that possible to afford with efficient folwark farms.
turks are deadly to surprise transition, all you need are the blacksmith upgrades and bloodlines and you get max survivability hussars with extra pierce armor
I just played in your community tournament with the mongols. Their scouts feel so strong with the +2 vision. This video would have helped me maye choosing what civ to play, but it worked out anyway
Hi Hera! Love your tierleist. Wanted to point out that IMO mongol hussar arent that bad against ranged attack compared to regular hussar. Infact castles with 11+2,11+3 and 11+4 attack take out both of them in the same number of hits. The most significant difference seems to be against arbalast which takes out mongol hussar in 20 hits while needing 24 hits to take out a regular hussar. Against Heavy CA its 17 hits vs 19 hits , and against anything with 12 attack its 15 hits vs 16 hits. Against gunpowder units mongol hussarsperform better than regular hussar.
Aye, that 30% hp bonus is no joke. It’s my favorite Hussar too for its ability to meat shield, including against hard hitters like enemy knights, halbs, and gunpowder. Plus, since the bonus is active in castle, it’s a strict upside until imperial. I hear some people say ‘well 2 less armor means way more damage against skirms’ and I’m like ‘skirms!? I’m not worried about skirms, if skirms are hitting my hussar, that means I’m winning!’

Sorry but aren't there any Lithuanian Winged Hussars? According to SOTL they are the best in the raider function, they lack the last attack update but even without this they match the attack of the other complete hussars and also have greater HP, all the armor updates, natively a bonus towards gunpowder units and an extra point of melee armor.
the problem is, lithu main units is heavy cavalry. Most of time, it is very hard to tech into both pala(or leitis) and winged hus. If you priortize teching into winged hus as lithu, you are not utilizing their civ bonus. If you tech into heavy cavalry(esp pala), then upgrading L cav to winged hus is opportunity loss of at least 10 pala. That is fk huge. But if you just use scout line as L cav, lacking blast furnace is too hurt.
In gold low situation, upgrading hus for having 15 more hp is too expensive so u could just use light cav, but after lithu lost blast furnace,lithu cannot just use 7+2 att light cav cuz it damn too weak. 800 gold for upgrading winged hus is too huge in low gold situation.

If Hera would expand his list of honorable mentions, though, then I think they would deserve a mention, alongside Cumans (+4.5% speed and faster creation time).
Probably magyars because of the free attack upgrades and the discount. Discounts in general tent to be among the best bonuses and said discount and the free attack help your rushes.
How broken would be if Lithuanian Hussars gain the same atk than knight line and Leitis with the relics? Because i imagine devs don't give the bonus for all cavalry for a reason, but i don't see how much impact would have.
I'm not a fan of the Polish Winged Hussars in the game. They are good in mass melee... but they Poles get super cheap cavaliers, which are in mass melee. So therefore I don't consider this a great asset to the light cavalry role, just a nice bonus. What you want them to be able to do is raid farms if you find a gap in your opponent's walls (if they have any), you want them to be able to kill monks that threaten your knight line units, and you want light cavalry to be able to close the distance on ranged units. Mongol light cavalry are pretty good at this, but Portuguese and Frankish light cavalry aren't bad either. And the Poles... die to Arbalest and town center fire just as easily as this group. So they're only at the Frank- Mongol level for the roles I want out of a light cavalry unit and they're better at a role, mass melee, I consider secondary.
I remember a team game I played back when they were much newer, we were up against a Britons player who had large hordes of Elite Longbows and literally the only thing we had that did anything at all was mass Polish Hussar which tore completely through the Longbows thanks to the opposing player not using staggered stance. Caviller wouldn't have stood a chance.

Polish hussar lacking armor is questionable # 1 for me. Feeing like the judgement is clouded by the polish eco here. If civ’s ability to pump out the units is considered, which I think it has to be to put poles on top, then where are gurjaras?
Two big points: 1) This is "Best Hussar Civ" so their ability to support them economically is definitely relevant. 2) The lost piece armour sucks and makes the poorer Hussars for raiding, but the trample damage (plus the attack and HP from winged Hussar) makes them really freaking good as a component of your army, which is a major role of hussars.
Light cavalry (2s) attack slower than hussars (1.9s) and the bulgarian hussar (1.27s) attacks faster still, meaning the bulgarian hussar deals more damage. This is even before you factor in their increased durability or potential to ramp up their building damage via team bonuses. On top of this, the Bulgarians have cheaper and faster blacksmiths, as well as stirrups being cheaper and available sooner than Farimba. The downside being that the Bulgarian eco is mostly generic.

AOE is the kind of game that even if you play with weaker opponents you can always still improve because there is so much little things that you can refine...

Haven't watched yet, guessing it's something like: Honorable mention to Turks. Free upgrade and bonus pierce armor are hella good but they don't have any eco bonus to benefit them long-term and Turks also lack trash units which makes their Hussar easier to counter since they're kind of stuck on them. 5. Berbers. Cheap and fully upgraded. 4. Tatars. Silk Armor. 3. Mongols. Free HP > Silk Armor. 2. Bulgarians. Cheap blacksmith upgrades plus Stirrups gives them the best damage output of anything outside of Polish Winged Hussar. 1. Magyars. Discounted Scout line plus FREE attack upgrades edges them out over Bulgarians. EDIT: Guess I'm overrating what Mongol HP is worth. Now do BOTTOM Five Hussar Civs

Historically accurate. Polish Hussars were the best unit in the world at their time, defeating enemies with 20 times more troops, like Turkish or Sweden armies. 1683, Vienna Battle, for example.
Idk hera it is a clickbait if we talking about hussar as a raiding unit. poles are imo the worst raiding hussars BY FAR. We ain't gonna trample the villagers anyway. And they are net negative as raiding units imo. They die fast enough to make garrisoning vills not even a problem in terms of idle time rss lost vs rss lost by dead pole hussars.
I'd love to see some changes done for certain units. First of all hussar and magyar hussar should finally lose wings. Over 1 year after dawn of the dukes release devs still didn't change this. Magyar hussar should be similar unit to steppe lancer with 1 range and keep its bonus attack vs siege. I love how this unit looks, but unfortunately its attack animation just doesn't make sense with its long lance and 0 range. I vote for 1 range for magyar hussar to make it similar to steppe lancer. Speaking of steppe lancers - they should be renamed to "lancer". Winged hussar shouldn't really be an upgrade for hussar line because in reality it was heavy cavalry and this formation was armed with long lance just like magyar hussar and steppe lancer are. Winged hussar should be redesigned to be an unique upgrade for lancers for both poles and Lithuanians. When it comes to "uniqueness" of this unit I would say giving it bonus attack vs gunpowder/archer would fit them perfectly and it'd be historically accurate.
Indeed. The problem is that most people know about hussars as the Napoleonic-era light cavalry, but in the late middle ages where this game is set in, hussars were not really light cavalry. Not as heavily armored as knights, but they were still fairly heavily armored and were used as shock cavalry, unlike the 19th century similarly named counterparts which were armed completely differently had had completely different roles.

Well... Some time ago I learned Lithuanian attack bonus from relics doesn't apply to Hussars. And they don't get Blast Furnace.
I guess the takeaway is that the winged hussar upgrade is less impactful than a good Civ bonus (even mongols got an honorable mention while Lithuanians did not). Maybe the cost needs to be lowered

@@forsakenquery They might be missing blast furnace, but winged hussar provides the +2 that they're missing anyways, so they're still pseudo-fully-upgradable. They end up with a little more hp, same PA, a little extra melee armor, and a few minor buffs to bonus damage.
@@jasonsmith1950 yeah so they're...good. Not 'needing' blast furnace could even be viewed as a buff, but only if you didn't go calvary (not likely with Lit). But they're nowhere near as powerful as Bulgarians or Magyars or Berbers or Tatars etc to be mentioned in the same breath.

Haven't watched yet, guessing it's something like:
Honorable mention to Turks. Free upgrade and bonus pierce armor are hella good but they don't have any eco bonus to benefit them long-term and Turks also lack trash units which makes their Hussar easier to counter since they're kind of stuck on them.
5. Berbers. Cheap and fully upgraded.
4. Tatars. Silk Armor.
3. Mongols. Free HP > Silk Armor.
2. Bulgarians. Cheap blacksmith upgrades plus Stirrups gives them the best damage output of anything outside of Polish Winged Hussar.
1. Magyars. Discounted Scout line plus FREE attack upgrades edges them out over Bulgarians.
EDIT: Guess I'm overrating what Mongol HP is worth.

I'm 100% sure Hera forgot that Gurjaras have 25% cheaper Hussar.
Well... The tech for 25% cheaper Hussars comes at a very high cost, so it's useful only in late game, and Gurjaras don't have Blast Furnace.

Historically accurate. Polish Hussars were the best unit in the world at their time, defeating enemies with 20 times more troops, like Turkish or Sweden armies. 1683, Vienna Battle, for example.

Idk hera it is a clickbait if we talking about hussar as a raiding unit. poles are imo the worst raiding hussars BY FAR. We ain't gonna trample the villagers anyway. And they are net negative as raiding units imo. They die fast enough to make garrisoning vills not even a problem in terms of idle time rss lost vs rss lost by dead pole hussars.
I'd love to see some changes done for certain units. First of all hussar and magyar hussar should finally lose wings. Over 1 year after dawn of the dukes release devs still didn't change this. Magyar hussar should be similar unit to steppe lancer with 1 range and keep its bonus attack vs siege. I love how this unit looks, but unfortunately its attack animation just doesn't make sense with its long lance and 0 range. I vote for 1 range for magyar hussar to make it similar to steppe lancer. Speaking of steppe lancers - they should be renamed to "lancer". Winged hussar shouldn't really be an upgrade for hussar line because in reality it was heavy cavalry and this formation was armed with long lance just like magyar hussar and steppe lancer are. Winged hussar should be redesigned to be an unique upgrade for lancers for both poles and Lithuanians. When it comes to "uniqueness" of this unit I would say giving it bonus attack vs gunpowder/archer would fit them perfectly and it'd be historically accurate.
Indeed. The problem is that most people know about hussars as the Napoleonic-era light cavalry, but in the late middle ages where this game is set in, hussars were not really light cavalry. Not as heavily armored as knights, but they were still fairly heavily armored and were used as shock cavalry, unlike the 19th century similarly named counterparts which were armed completely differently had had completely different roles.
