Now that you’ve seen the last episode… think back about to each character in episode 2. Sangwoo was gonna commit suicide, and he does in this episode. Saebyeok smashed a glass pot over the broker’s head and threatened to slice his throat, and she was killed by broken glass and knife to neck. The gangster jumped off the bridge, and had his epic ending on the glass bridge. The story structure is so tight!

Before pulling the knife, Sangwoo says: "When we were kids, we'd play games just like this. And our moms would call us in for dinner. But nobody calls us anymore"
This line speaks to the burdens that come with adulthood. There comes a point in time where we all grow up and we're let off into the world and left to fend for ourselves. Our parents aren't calling us in for dinner anymore. We inherit responsibilities we never had. We work jobs to provide for ourselves. We saddle ourselves with debt in an effort to improve our lives.
For some of us, things turn out really well. For most, they turn out just okay. But for an unlucky few, things turn out disastrous. Those are the people who end up as contestants in Squid Game.

Gi-hun's mom died in pain and thinking that her son abandoned her. Sang Woo's mom lived on knowing her son screwed her over, and thinking that he left her to the mess he left behind. Sae-byeok's little brother (at least for the first year where Gi-hun was bumming out from PTSD) lived on thinking that his sister abandoned him like the other kids said she would.
At least the latter 2 found some closure/happiness with each other, once Gi-hun finally got his act together.

The creator has said that he intended this to be a final thing, that the series could just end there with a complete but open-ended ending but he did leave things unanswered on purpose. Although it's not definite yet (and making season 1 was so stressful for him), he said that if he were to continue the series that the three things he had in mind were either seeing what Gi-hun does next, exploring the backstory of In-ho/The Front Man, or even getting more in-depth with The Recruiter.

I will say, this wouldn't have worked as a standalone series. It really needs a second season. It's fine having some unanswered questions, but there's a difference between ambiguity that helps a story vs. ambiguity that distracts from it. I think you have to explore In-ho's backstory, and you have to follow through with whatever Gi-hun does to take them down. It would have been unwise to end the series here, so I'm glad they're following through.

Here, we look at some Squid Game Easter eggs and clues hidden in plain sight that you may have missed.
    1. The Writing's on the Wall
Right since episode the walls featured several pictograms that illustrated the games to come. As more people were removed from the quarters with each round of deadly eliminations, more of the illustrations were on display for those who noticed. The hints to the games were right in front of all the players but the stacks of bed were covering them up and nobody noticed it.
    2. The Old Man Goes Undetected
During the first game (Red Light, Green Light), player No.001 (Oh Il-nam, an old man with a brain tumor who we later find out is the mastermind behind the competition) avoids detection by the eyes of a giant robotic doll that looks for those to be eliminated. If you look closely him and the girl in his vicinity does not have the green filter when the robot doll was detecting movement while everyone else had one. He had a protective ring around him so he can go undetected by the robot even if he moves.
    3. He's All Smiles Throughout a Fatal Competition
Il-nam is also the only one smiling while competing in the fatal games. His surprisingly upbeat attitude in the face of the do or die situation may have been one of the biggest giveaways of his identity.
    5. There's No Trace of Player No. 001 in the Game Records
The policeman, who infiltrated the game facility disguised as a staff member, discovers an archive room containing records about every competition held to date. A book outlining the players in the latest competition (the 2020 edition) appears to begin with player no. 002, and not player no. 001, indicating there is no profile on the old man since he is the creator of the games.
    6. His name
The name "Oh Il Nam" in Korean translated to the "First man" which was a hint suggesting that he is the guy leading this entire thing.
    7. The Old Man Gives Player No. 456 His Jacket
Before the Marbles game round, Gi-hun gave his jacket to the old man to cover his trousers after Gi-hun noticed Il-nam had wet himself while sleeping. Now if you notice you'll also see an empty water bottle right next to him which suggests that he actually did not pee himself but fabricated the entire thing in order to make himself look "weak" so no one picks him for the next game. He knew the following games were all based on chance unlike the ones they played till then which was more on strategy. These games are all games that Il nam was good at and played a lot as a child but since the last ones were totally based on luck he tried to back out of the game but he really did not see Gi-hun picking him for the marble game. He pretended to be delusional there just to lose the game so he can go and attend to the VIPs.

I appreciate that they want to keep the character of Gi-hun as good and "clean" as possible, so he can't kill Sang-woo, and he can't just win the sixth game because they'll shoot Sang-woo, so the only option left is to have him offer Sang-woo his hand and say, "Let's get out of here, old friend. Let's go home," only to have Sang-woo, whom we already know is suicidal and drowning in guilt and shame, and who has done awful things in the name of self-preservation, and who is looking at prison time for the embezzlement and fraud charges awaiting him back home, kill himself, thus redeeming himself and handing a fortune to his old friend.

There’s a theory that there are actually several Front Men/Front Women since these games are global. The one we see in this show is the Front Man for South Korea. And since Il-Nam is passed away, there might be a games of thrones-style power struggle amongst the world’s Front Men/Front Women vying for the position of Grand Host.

    • @JR-ub2wt

    • @h-e-acc
      @h-e-acc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@JR-ub2wt you have a point 😬 but maybe being host comes with certain executive privileges, influence and prestige among the secret society class and that maybe many billionaires would rather delegate the responsibility and would rather spectate than be involved in the mundane preparations and organization. That’s probably why il-nam had to delegate the hosting to the front man.

I actually have a theory regarding Oh Ill-Nam's death. In his final moments, he created an opponent for his successor, the Front Man. The Old man used specific manipulation tactics to ensure Gi-hun's would return to theliving. After all the game must go on. Squid game season 2: Gi-hun vs front man, battle of the victors!!!

How come there're two different types of English subtitles? This version is more poorly translated than other version. For example, when Sangwoo dies, he only says 'My mom'. but this version kindly translates,' My mother, go help her'. Not vastly wrong, but hey. not exactly intended by Korean script.

Confession time: I actually laughed out loud at your episode 6 reaction BUT it was a sympathy laugh because I knew exactly how you'd feel after this twist. Your reaction was so sincere and knowing the show was pulling an evil trick on you made it funny in a "oh I remember how I felt like when I watched that" way. I don't know if that makes sense. Point is I wasn't laughing in a mocking way. More in a "oh no, here it comes" way.

Aww for Adam. When I saw you crying for the old man I was like damn, Adam is going to be so pissed when they get to the finale.
I suspected the old man from episode 2. Something things he said made me suspicious of him. Then as the series progressed, I saw more clues to confirm it.
So while watching the season, I had a love anger relationship with him. Love, because he was so sweet and I just wanted to protect him. Anger, because I suspected he was working with the persons behind everything, which was a betrayal to everyone, especially Gi-hun.
Anyway, really enjoyed your reactions 😊

Adam taking ownership of how the show went from really upsetting him publically to straight out anger over the final twist is amazing internet viewing, Bravo, what a rollercoaster. Both Jay and Adam's reactions are a testament to the show's writers and the actors portraying their characters.
I am conflicted about if I would like a follow-up series. On the one hand, I would like to see perhaps another version of the game in another country with Gi-Hun trying to disrupt it, perhaps teaming up with the police officer if he survived. But on the other hand, perhaps the show would be best to stand on its own and not be milked to death...

Gi Hun is a idiot so it is better they make him die at the beginning of the 2nd season and new hero take the lead. Korea has a very good actors and actresses. I know at 2nd season they will put the most known names and one of them will be the lead. Really wonder about the 2nd season and the new kid games that they will use. and sure the new plot twists. and hope they tells us the background of the the metro guy. Gong Yoo is a huge actor in Korea. They cant leave that mysterious guy as a side character.

Lol, I was the same. Was like I want ALL my tears back I cried for you. Part of me still wants to believe that the old man also didn't want to see the rest because he did have a connection/feeling with Gi Hun.
Also I'd rather not have 2nd season, as much as I enjoyed it I don't think it would be as good. A prequel about the Front Man would be good, I'd like to know how/why he got into the games, him winning and what led up to him becoming the Front Man. And maybe in that we can get an answer about In Ho, cause once he found that badge, he was trying to get him to surrender to (savehim). As much as he was offing people with no problems, hitting him in the shoulder was definitely trying to give him a chance to survive.
