    Great vid. I worked an "exemption" hay operation in Central Texas, lots of machines rolling where the biggest and newest urban blight on the edges of Austin are today. Tony fixed lots of tires for me out on the frontier of "New Cali-York-Xico". Im sure lots of people know allll about some tire repairs, im proud of you all. The only time he had to do a return trip on the same tire for me, was when I ran over a second deer antler in the same field, same tire! 7 years worth, Tony always showed up, and I was rolling again quick!

    Thank you Great Video Had to see this before I started changing my Model 1910 Ford rear tires. I work in a tire shop as a kid and have the equipment to do the tire change but it has been 45 years since I "busted tires" for a living. This refresher course works for me.

    I defer to Tony's experience. He's changed thousands more tires than I have, on everything from semis to earth-moving machines. He has very good reasons for everything he does, gained through decades of experience, and he's always glad to share them, but I haven't asked him about why he prefers to work with the tube as flat as possible.

      When I did bicycle tubes, I liked to have a little air in them to hold shape and help keep them in place.

    Glad I found this video... Showed a way to remove tube without all the hassle of taking the wheel/rim off the tractor. Worked great. I liked the vice grip on the rim while mounting. Saved me lots of time.

    I do tire repair in Northwestern Wisconsin . I learned how to fix and change them from my Dad . The Old guy was as tough as $ 1.50 steak . He had 1 eye and 1 hand . lost his eye to a cow horn stabbing him and his hand to ALLIS Chalmers mounted corn picker . He was still out changing tires at 80 when he died . The old guy had a system of changing them that would make you shake your head . With one hand and a hook , he could flop them on and off . I worked in a Machine shop so if he needed any special tools made I could do it for him. I always asked him , Dad when are you going to retire ? He'd say Ahh that's for all them old Buzzard's !!! he said that when he was 79 . Lol.
    He died on 10-19-1998 changing a flat tire on gravity box full of corn that was about a 1/4 mile from his drive way . a guy went by and blew a tire on a full load of corn. Well as being that dad was the tire guy he was Johnny on the spot got it off , fixed , and was putting it back on the wagon , when the Hell raising next door neighborhood punk , that lived a half a mile south of our place , That had just got his license came flying down the road and slammed Into the back of the wagon . It was all most dark so they had the guys pickup in front of the wagon shinning the lights on it to see , and all the kid could see was one light and thought he was meeting a car and didn't slow down. He hit the wagon and pinned Dad in between the wagon and the truck killing him instantly. I always told him that you'll probably die with your boots on and your arm in a tire . Lol He would laugh and say yeah but at least my boots Will be on ! So all this is in the memory of Lester J Wagenius . The Toughs Tire Guy I Ever Meet . Rest in Peace Buddy !!! May all your tire jobs be easy ones ! Love Ya Man !!

      That's a hell of a story, and a better way to go out than rotting in a hospital. Makes you wonder how long he would have kept thumbing his nose at death before something else took him out!

      artgoat Hey how you do n . Yeah if I was going to sit and type a story of what I knew about him . It would take a while to write. All things he went through in his life was unreal. I we live in Grantsburg Wisconsin . And at the age of 9 he was sent here to live on his Aunt and Uncles farm cause they had no kids (aka) slaves . To work on a Dairy farm . Him and his brother were sent here in 1929 from Wolf Point Montana. He stayed here his whole life working like a dog for them. He got drafted during the war but was sent home because they had no kids of there own . He was almost killed Four times by horses in Runaways . Almost died from Rheumatic Fever , He would of if it hadn't been for the old veterinarian being at the farm for one of the horse's and chewing my aunt out and hauling him to the hospital him self he would of . Then loosing his eye dehorning cows here at home in the mid 50's , getting his hand in the corn picker on November 1 1967 . Times were tough as hell but we don't know it as kids . He spent 3 months in St Joseph hospital in Minneapolis till he got his hook , all this time my mom had a hard time keeping people to milk cows , He was milking almost 40 head of cows . It was a cold snowy winter and I remember all the men in the neighborhood got together and cut wood and brought over 6 big hay wagons of wood for us cause that's all the heat we had . He'd been home for a couple of months and things were going OK. He was try n to get use to his hook . And when those guys had dumped the wood by the house there was a big block for splitting . He was splitting some with the axe a double bit. He gave it a hell of a swing and it caught the clothes line flying back and caught him in the fore head and laid him cold in a puddle of blood in the snow . He laid there about 2 hours till the neighbor stopped to say hi and found him .His Aunt was killed in a car crash in 1970 and he was deeded the farm . Spent his while life for 200 acres Wow . He milked cows till 1975 and sold out . Still did crops. Had a job driving the whey truck for the Cheese factory for a few years . They had the Shits trucks on the road. He was in 4 Roll overs. Said the hell with that job. And that's when he started fixing tires in about 1981 . The old guy could put away a few beers . But his true love was dancing. He could polka till 2 and be up drinking coffee and ready to go at 6:30 . Hell he didn't get gray hair till he was 75 . He died at 80 and the shape he was in 6,2 175 wasn't on any meds or nothing . he would of went another 10 or 15 years. His mom was 96 when she passed. And she did a acre and a half of cucumber s by her self every summer . but he was always happy go lucky . Always said. My Boy ! If you have your Health ! And good Friends ! Your a Wealthy Man ! And I guess he had friends there was almost 350 people at the church. They were packed in like fish . Lol. Thank you so much for letting me tell his story. Roger. Wagenius

    Tony the tire man Morgan is in his mid 50s been working with tires since he was 7 started out in his father's shop ... He knows every trick to the trade and is one of the hardest workin people I've ever seen taught me everything I know .
    No need for a jack stand on a light tractor like this and the wrinkles in the tube were previously done so all you nay sayers can go away cause if you don't know the man then can't run your mouth or keyboard about him

    • @eabaendallbeall7959
      @eabaendallbeall7959 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      james krumm the only thing I would have done different is inflate the tube a little before mounting the outer bead otherwise the tube can get stuck under the bead. also wrinkling in the tube can be help sometimes by deflation and re-inflated of the tire after the beads are seated. otherwise he was very efficient. and I was kinda eyeballing the phone # on the truck maybe see if he needs another guy.

    Wrinkles in the tubes are from not letting the air out a few times. He really should be using a little bit of baby powder in the tire to help the tube settle and slide so it doesn't fold when inflating. Letting the air out 2 to 3 times helps it settle as well. He also shouldn't tighten the ring all the way down at first,if u tighten it halfway first,it'll show if the tube is in correctly depending on if the valve stem pushes and stays out or if it sucks back inside (backwards)

    Two tips to keep the tube from folding on itself from aircraft tire industry. Use tire talc inside to help keep the tube from sticking and slightly inflate the tube inside the tire before final bead install. You can then see inside as the tire expands outward to check if all is well with the tube. Then deflate and finish mounting. We aircraft mechs do that every time can't afford tire blowouts on aircraft you know:)

    • @artgoat
      @artgoat  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's a good tip, but unlike aircraft tires, tractor tires come in a limited range of sizes, and you just have to use something "kinda close."

    East of Havre Montana, summer of '94, I pulled into a two-pump gas station and happened onto two men repairing a large tractor tire. It was hot and they were wrestling with a tire larger than the one in the video. Saline everywhere, so it was a bit of a mess. I asked one of the guys what they charged to fix a tire like that. His answer: $20. Yea, there was something wrong with that picture... Even 19 years ago, that wasn't enough.

    Nice job changing that tire out. When you have a little know-how and the right tools, everything typically goes pretty smoothly. When it comes to "bull-work", slow and steady wins the race! There's no reason to go any faster than Tony did here. As both a farmer and a mechanic, I've changed more than my fair share of tractor tires in my day, and I know what I'm talking about here.
    Tony did a fine job changing that tire out, and he did it in a very reasonable amount of time. I also am sick of smart-asses that run their mouths about things that they know little to nothing about. Guess that's kinda what the internet is all about, damned blabber-mouths. There's no reason to hurry with this kind of work. I don't care who you are, you aren't getting paid by the job, but by the hour.
    Working steadily and SAFELY will get a lot more work done in a day, not to mention at the end of the day, you get to go home still in one piece and not on a stretcher on your way to the ER, where you will be totally unproductive. Not to mention, if you get hurt badly, you'll be laid up for a while and unable to work. Worse yet - you could be DOA (dead-on-arrival). Working on large tires is no joke. Kudos for making it look easy, and a job well done!

    • @artgoat
      @artgoat  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Tony only charged $310 including the farm call, and a new Goodyear tube and mounting all 4 tires. Considering I paid almost $2,000 for the tires, It was totally worth it. He had to use a hydraulic bead breaker the first time, because the tire beads were so stuck they couldn't be broken loose with a sledge hammer. Any tire that has been mounted for more than a couple of years is probably going to take special tools to break it loose.

    The tube creased like that because it was not partially inflated before pulling the last bead over...by inflating it first it should not crease...then after the last bead is on deflate tube then inflate again to insure proper tube and brad seat

    • @artgoat
      @artgoat  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrBear231 See my comment below on tractor tire tube sizes. Tony and I talked a lot about tubes and what causes them to crease, and how well they deal with it. That's one reason I opted to pay extra for the Goodyear tubes, but the size is still "one size sorta fits many."

    I do tractor tyres here in Australia and they are full of air and water and it's a lot harder to get off cos farmers find it better to drive on with tyres full of water

    • @artgoat
      @artgoat  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      First time Tony replaced my tires, they were 75% full of water. He cranked the valve to the bottom and took the valve out without releasing the pressure. The water shot out 20 feet for awhile and drained down to where he could pull the tube out after he broke the bead. He then cut the tube and all the water (and sealant) came out. If I were running tubeless, it would have been harder to get the water out, but it still would have been below the rim.

    Depends on the size of the tire, whether you need tubes, singles or duals, whether you put sealant or ballast in it, etc. On my little tractor it was $310 which included a couple of rear tubes and the service call.

    • @artgoat
      @artgoat  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      To be fair, I've found the smaller a tire is, the harder it is to change out. These are 30" rims, so a lot of it is knowing where to apply the force and having big enough tools. The biggest pain I ever had was replacing the front tires on my mower, on 8" rims. The rear tires on some sport bikes, on 16" rims, with rim locks, are some of the most evil bastards on earth to change out.

      It's not luck, it's experience. Tony cut his teeth on mining equipment at Alcoa. He's seen more inner tubes than you've seen hot meals.

    • @MrBear231
      @MrBear231 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not arguing the fact Tony is a hard worker but honestly I see enough tires in a day to know not to use a creased tube regardless of its age of a tube has been creased it is the incorrect size and it installed with little care..and also he didn't buff or clean the rim before installing the new Tire.....just a few things that makes me cringe..and I also hope he took the brass collar off the tube stem and replaced it with a plastic one to prevent it from rusting to the rim in 10 years down the road.

    • @artgoat
      @artgoat  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Again, you need to consider the individual situation. He already replaced my tires 6 months before (which is why he didn't have to use a bead breaker). Do you think he has to buff the rim every six months? If the paint is good, buffing the rim is just going to CAUSE corrosion (tires down here don't use salt, because they don't freeze). Likewise, there is NO SUCH THING as the perfect-sized tube, these days. Pretty much any tube you buy is going to end up with wrinkles, because Firestone only makes a limited range of tube sizes to fit all the tires for a particular rim size. Guaranteed. That's just reality. Thinking you can have zero wrinkles is FANTASY.
      The only way you won't have wrinkles is if your tractor just happens to have exactly the perfect size tire for the single tube size that Firestone makes for 30" rims-the TR-218 (which they claim fits tires from 14.9 - 18.4... more or less). Tony and I talked about it at some length. So if you are running 18.4-30 tires, MAYBE you won't have wrinkles, but my 4WD makes it a bad idea to play with tire sizes. I'd rather deal with a small risk of flats than transfer-box destruction.
      Don't know about your concern that brass will corrode to the rim. That's a new one on me. The previous valve stem was 30 years old, and hadn't corroded, despite the tires being filled. Tony replaced all the valves completely (not just the cores) when he put the new set of tires on it. I'd have to look to see if they have plastic collars, but I REALLY REALLY doubt it. Considering tractor valve stems have a stainless washer between the collar nut and the rim, the likelihood that it can corrode to the rim is pretty remote. I HAVE seen plastic collars crack and fall apart (usually on mowers). That's why very few tractor valve stems come with anything but brass or stainless.

    the tube is most likely wrinkled because he didn't let the air back out and then aired it up again to let the tube form to the tire properly. not saying he didn't do that because it obviously doesn't show the whole airing up process but that's the cause of that most of the time. and jojo go tell someone who cares. the tractor isn't going to hurt him if it falls. there's no need for a jack stand on this job. and he's not slow. he's moving at a nice steady pace. i do this work every day and ya it can be done quicker but he's not trying to be the fastest tire changer in the world so stop bashing on him because you can't do it quicker

    • @artgoat
      @artgoat  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tractor tube sizes are fairly approximate, and the tire companies consider people who run tubes to be the neglected step-children, since they think "real" farmers are running tubeless, and radial to boot! On the rears, it takes a 16.9x30, but the tubes that you can get are meant to fit a fairly wide range of 30" rims. In Firestones, they "fit" 14.9 to 18.4. As a result, on some tire sizes there is no inflation method which will completely eliminate wrinkles.

    • @CTS2469
      @CTS2469 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed!! but I do know that this inflation process will help. but i do agree with you.

    • @artgoat

      Because I'm the customer, and I requested he put tubes in my tires, and he does what the customer asks. With rims this old and rusty, getting a good tubeless seal at 18PSI is not always reliable.
