What's The BEST Sportscar Transmission? Manual vs Automatic Toyota Supra!

  • 👋 Let's do this! After selling my automatic Toyota Supra over a year ago and then recently buying the all new 2023 Manual Transmission Toyota Supra, today we compare the automatic Supra to the manual Supra back to back! I am loving the 6 speed manual in the Toyota Supra and it fits my taste so well! However I did love the benefits on my automatic Supra while I owned it. So today we check out this pre-owned 2022 Toyota Supra equipped with the ZF 8 speed automatic and compare all of the benefits and negatives with the auto Supra vs the 6 speed manual Supra. We also talk a bit about transmission choice in general for modern sportscar and all the pros and cons of having an automatic or manual. The benefits of an automatic sportscar is that they are faster! Modern autos are lightning quick to make a gear change and simply end up producing faster lap times and better drag race times. A human just could never shift a manual as fast. Automatics are also convenient. Owning a cool sportscar like a Supra is a lot of fun especially when it can be a commuter daily driver, and still be a fun toy. Drive it in automatic during the week, and then play with the paddle shifters when you want some fun! Modern automatics typically have more gears and actually get better MPG then the manual counterpart as well! It's also super easy to drive and anyone can drive a modern sportscar with an auto quite fast! Biggest drawback of an automatic is that they can get boring. While there are many benefits, depending on how you'll drive the car, you could get bored having an auto. I ended up selling my auto Supra because I missed a manual and got bored with it. Manuals offer one major benefits. Which is the fun factor. Simple like nothing else and really let you be connected to the car and its just a blast in the right setting. Overall it's great to know that the Toyota Supra has such a good automatic that your still getting all of the fun out of the car, and many other automatic sportscars can be just as fun. But if your sportscar is more of a play car, the manual will just be a blast!

I have a 2023 Supra A91 6MT. Trust me the Automatic Supra is slightly faster than the Manual, but the Auto is not engaging or as fun. The Manual is not worth it if you are in a lot of traffic in big cities. Get an Auto if it's a daily in the city. Get a Manual if it's a fun weekend, date night, canyon cruiser, etc type of car. I have no regrets at how rewarding my Manual Supra is.

I bought a 6 speed M/T Scion FRS when they first came out. Didn’t even know how to drive a manual at the time so it was fun getting it off the lot to say the least haha, but I had fun with it. Now that I’m older and about to hit midlife crisis age 39 pushing 40, I’m thinking of upgrading to one of these. Driving my Scion has been a bit of a pain lately though as I live in Honolulu and traffic is terrible to say the least. It’s nice to know I wouldn’t be losing out if I decide on the auto. Still undecided though.

I've had manuals, including a Mustang GT.
I'm currently driving a 2022 BMW M240i xdive. The BMW M240i xdrive, has basically the same BMW engine and ZF trans as the GR Supra automatic. I can honestly say after experiencing the "unbelievable" ZF 8-speed auto, I would never get a Supra with a manual, even if it was just a weekend fun car.
As you say, when shifting the BMW ZF auto (or in this case the Supra auto) in manual mode, it's much faster and has much quicker shifts than the manual. And that added performance from the auto just equates to "more driver fun". And in my book, more performance and more fun, by default, equates to more car and driver/driving engagement.
The automatic's better MPGs and being the better daily are just icing on the cake, which I would gladly give up if the manual was faster and better performing - but it isn't.

  • @RSX250

Couple points you forgot for the manual.
1 - 6mt Supra should hold value better than the Auto due to limited supply and higher demand.
2 - 6mt is annoying if you put drinks in the cup holder. - This contributes to your point on practicality
Another thing you didnt touch on but is a reason for the performance difference, is the boost. When you shift in the 6mt car you interrupt power and therefore boost. The car takes time to re-build boost in-between shifts. Its not much time but it all adds up. In the Auto there is no loss of boost or power so the performance difference grows incrementally.
Agree with your other points, nice video.

Yes automatics (and I have driven a few including the dual clutch Megane 4RS) have come a long, long way and on the whole can be better especially for daily and spirited driving....but for engagement and ultimate control, understanding exactly when to change or using the engine to brake as you drop down a gear, going around a corner, the manual is just unbeatable and it wont upshift or downshift when you do not want it to.... Yeah the manual is a blast! It actually put down a faster lap time at VIR then the auto. So really the auto is for people who want to go faster in a line. Fun cars tho!

I don't see the point of having a manual anymore. To have all the controls ourselves? Lol, then might as well drive a car without power-steering.

Sad reality is . Nowdays the manual transmission off no benefit at all.
Just "old fun" aspect. Lost of new and young gearheads just repeat stories about driving a stick. 😂
You wont be better or faster then new gen autos. Saving time / speed is what racing is about after all.
We shall just leave this as personal preference 😂😂😂😂.

Very true! On paper an automatic is better in every way. But people like me just loving rowing through gears! Fun factor is very cool in these!

The one thing all u guys miss is distance. If u drive a good distance, u will never go into sport to get the mpg. Then what’s the point of owning the car?

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed

These are fine long distance care. And plenty efficient too. These are sportscars made for fun driving but can also be good daily drivers.

Pff. I work at a car wash. When it comes to a manual being a "theft deterrent", not even the owners of BMW's can operate their AUTOMATIC transmissions. Point is moot lol

Quick Fact: Automatics were never created to be faster sports cars. they were created to "Ease"/Soften driving because as generations passed people viewed driving more as a chore. Now that tech has improved and they're slightly faster we're just gonna assume Automatics are better sports cars. well NO. Teslas are fast, they're not really an enthusiasts choice. Point is you can get an Auto for every other reason which is fine, but you will never be looked at by the car community as having a better/cooler sports car than a Manual,SORRY!!

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed
      @BrosFOURRSpeed  ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thanks for sharing! A lot of cars like a Mclaren don’t offer a manual and they are still viewed as amazing cars lol, even the GTR! At the end of the day, it’s whatever the owner is going to enjoy for their needs. It doesn’t matter what others opinions are, you buy what works for you! I personally love manuals but I also love how my GTR drives! Two different and fun experiences!
