To any young photographers or cinematographers who view this: _THAT'S_ how you use color as an element of composition. What an incredible artist we have in this young woman.
I was following an Alex Da Corte thread to get here, and now I'm leaving to follow a St. Vincent thread. Just saw Da Corte's "57 Varieties" at the Venice Biennale and got wowed. This video has his sensibility w/r to color.
Different people collaborate to make music videos, usually. (Alex Da Corte directed this one…) It’s a common mistake, but a pretty major one, imo. We need to do better educating ourselves about the various arts. The video is stunning, though, for sure! ☺️👍🏼🎀
this album is so powerful to me bc she still has her classic stiff, almost robotic delivery and crisp aesthetics that she def still has in this video but the vulnerability of the lyrics keeps seeping through in her face and her voice. such a beautiful contrast!!! love love love
I love the tone of the lyrics - the begrudging remorse and not wanting to admit wrongdoing but still doing so in the choruses anyways - really complex emotion for such a short peice. God I love St. Vincent - easily one of the best projects to make it big this past decade.
This is one of my favorite music videos of all time. The artistic direction is sickening and flawless. The song itself is beautiful and catchy. When I’m feeling some type of way this song comforts me. Thank you St. Vincent for sharing your brilliant mind.
Great music video; the visual aesthetics, the eye-popping colors, the costumes, the scenery, the directing style, and of course, Annie's performance... all incredible.
St. Vincent really makes me feel sorry for people my age...40+...that just listen to their 80's or 90s playlists over and over. You're missing some amazing new music. I could listen to 'Prince Johnny' on a loop for an hour straight.
Especially the breathing in. What does Courtney Barnett say in Avant Gardener? 'I'm not that good at breathing in'. Annie is soooo good at breathing in!
Well I am in my early twenties and trust me, the majority of people my age are not listening to her. They would rather listen to the new rap music out now or Ariana Grande...
I always think about that! I'm 28 and have so much love for 80s/90s music, but I wonder how many people your age appreciate all the phenomenal music my own generation makes! It's seems to me pretty rare for Gen X to care about artists like St Vincent (although some might consider her a 'Xennial' lol she's 36 now after all!)
Sean Matusin I played in bands early 80’s and am pretty dang old. I sadly now play bass in a blues rock band, cuz that is what old people do. I like the synthier, poppier side of St. V. The obtuse stuff does not connect with me. However, I still prefer my 70’s and 80’s music. I believe in hooks. I do like how Ms. Clark experiments with guitar, but I prefer Annie Wilson’s intro to “Crazy on You” to the Adrian Belew type stuff St. V is cranking out, though I confess I have a lot of his work and do want to hear that kind of stuff on occasion. th-cam.com/video/3N5qQrGSuJ4/w-d-xo.html
If you contrast this video with her video for "Los Ageless", a song about the city of Los Angeles, you can see that there's so much difference! Both videos are very colorful and beautiful, but in "Los Ageless", St. Vincent is visibly disturbed and even disgusted by organic, natural things. It's about plastic surgery, aesthetics, looking beautiful and synthetic. In this video, you can see her freckles (more of a natural makeup style), there's FIRE, a live animal, live flowers, a breeze blowing through her hair...the difference is so remarkable! Maybe that's why Annie Clark prefers to live in New York City =)
I've imagined this video so much different of this version. I thought it was going to be something more intimate and more "real", you know? But I liked it, anyway. It's visually appealing and you are BEAUTIFUL as always. Keep doing an amazing job like this one. Love u so much 💕
The fire on the green vegetation as microphone is nice magical. Reminds of the red lights around town burning the green ones. Neat tune minor editing would makes it shine.
It kind of seems like she's leveled up. This has a really strong vibe, like a perfect transition and growth from her previous work (not that her previous work wasn't strong I've loved all of her stuff but this song is seriously badass). And the video is to die for, it's beautiful
This music video is so gorgeous! The color blocking is amazing and she looks so beautiful, defintely a new era and side of Clark I've never seen before. Excited for more!
She is pure art in human form.....I can't warp my head around how amazing she is! How sad the lyrics are and meshed with the amazing visuals punches you in the face with everything!!
I’m from Russia but I lived in NYC for a couple years and fell in love with this city. And this song makes me cry and miss it so bad. Love it with all my heart.
This always reminds me of a couple of people who, without them my hometown just lost the zesty flavour and in spite of what I tried couldn't replace it. Great stuff
I could literally break down crying to this song. My interpretation is a little cliche, but. It really feels like an incredibly vulnerable confession of pure sorrow, mourning and regret. A heartbreakingly familiar portrayal of how fucking horrible it feels when you finally lose someone who really was special to have in your life, and you in theirs; but you just couldn't make it work despite all the positives, and you'd give anything to them back living and apart of your life in "New York". The loss of that kind of Friend or Relationships is terrifyingly numbing, the calm, dead expression throughout such a vibrant environment in the video is how it can feel being somewhere you love and cherish, but something still feels missing; 00:19 New York isn't New York without you love .
absolutely beautiful, what an interesting and unexpected visual direction for her! When I watched it I felt like it was a tribute to the protagonist of the song.
perfect NY music... reminds me of a time where searching for love in all the wrong places and partying all night long was a runaway train the youth could never escape.
New York is simply brilliant, denoting a compositional ability that it is not absolutely common. I listened to the song many times before watching the video, this because the creative force distracts from pure listening. Music and images create a new structure for the song, the result is magnificent. I bought the vinyl, I'm too old and I still love listening to the Music sitting in an armchair. Many thanks St. Vincent.
I hope the record contains a hyper-psychotic track. Like how 'Marry Me' had 'Your Lips Are Red', Strange Mercy had 'Northern Lights', 'St Vincent' had 'Bring Me Your Loves'
1:55 - Anyone else at this point in the video from Ann Arbor, Michigan say “hey that looks like our Cube!” And then research it and realize there is an exactly the same spinny Cube in NYC? See, St. V is educational as well as insanely talented. 👏🏼
I can't wait to see this beautiful creature, this underrated guitarist at the Ancienne Belgique again this month! :D love you St.Vincent! OXO! let me be your cheerleader!
i forgot where i read it, but they put this swan on set because it was known for being super friendly and calm. although, wanted to eat the styrofoam stuffing from the couch cut in half.
First time listening to her and surprised her music is so good! Reminds me of regina spektor and ingrid michaelson etc etc i mean all these female musicians are awesome af!!! Music is cross-generational !!!
Every time I hear it as "New York IS in New York" and I'm like "That's true".
@Ushnik Banerjee me too hahaha
THSTS NOT THE LYRic????!!
Tina Hurtz hehe
Oh damn i always heard New York isn’t New York without you love
Spilling straight FACTS
To any young photographers or cinematographers who view this: _THAT'S_ how you use color as an element of composition. What an incredible artist we have in this young woman.
She's not the one that did the video, check out the artist Alex Da corte I'm pretty sure he's the one who did most of the things you see in the video
I was following an Alex Da Corte thread to get here, and now I'm leaving to follow a St. Vincent thread. Just saw Da Corte's "57 Varieties" at the Venice Biennale and got wowed. This video has his sensibility w/r to color.
You should watch La La Land. It is full of ''color as an element of composition''.
Pix4r yes!

That colour palettte is everything my eyes need to see.
I love the tone of the lyrics - the begrudging remorse and not wanting to admit wrongdoing but still doing so in the choruses anyways - really complex emotion for such a short peice.

I KNOW RIGHT?!? p.s. love your channel!!
nothing special
its funny that this is the thing that finally makes me check out your channel and i L O V E I T
I guess that's what drove me crazy about her and her mad music
This is one of my favorite music videos of all time. The artistic direction is sickening and flawless. The song itself is beautiful and catchy. When I’m feeling some type of way this song comforts me. Thank you St. Vincent for sharing your brilliant mind.
Great music video; the visual aesthetics, the eye-popping colors, the costumes, the scenery, the directing style, and of course, Annie's performance... all incredible.
Sabina England truth! ❤️
Sabina England ur fine girl
Is it ok that I cry every time I hear this song?
it is a sad song.
Ileana Suk I do too no shame
Absolutely, darling
Same here, this song just caresses one's soul on a deeper level of emotion compared to many other songs, New York is very unique
St. Vincent really makes me feel sorry for people my age...40+...that just listen to their 80's or 90s playlists over and over. You're missing some amazing new music. I could listen to 'Prince Johnny' on a loop for an hour straight.

Andy Tanguay I’m close to my 50’s and those are my thoughts exactly.
Well I am in my early twenties and trust me, the majority of people my age are not listening to her. They would rather listen to the new rap music out now or Ariana Grande...

It’s so…sad? the lyrical work makes me sob but the colors make smile.
I come back to watch this every once in a while cause it’s just so pretty.
ditto
Obsessed-- I love everything about this.
I think my favorite part is when she gently pulls the swan away from eating her sequined dress
“I’ve lost a hero, I’ve lost a friend, but for u darling I’ll do it all again.”
Everything is bright and flashy but her eyes show deep sadness. I love this song.
Man, I am so bummed I'm just really catching on to Annie's work. What an amazing journey for all her long-time fans. Better late than never I guess.
Any Bold Type fans here? What an episode. Excited for the new season!
Agreed. Brilliant episode 🌻💕
Yessssss
*Bold Type*
I keep coming back to this song and it still makes my emotions shake. The artistry, visuals, lyrics tell that story so well.
THE WINK AT THE END
Annie Clark is our wonky-eyed goddess.
b r i d g e t m c c
It was more of a Bwink
Why did I have to scroll this far for someone to actually reference it!
IVE DECIDED TO STAN FOREVER

This is perfect. Just beautiful on every level
this is so good it physically hurts.
The fire on the green vegetation as microphone is nice magical. Reminds of the red lights around town burning the green ones. Neat tune minor editing would makes it shine.

Absolutely LOVE the visuals from her "Masseduction" era!
This music video is so gorgeous! The color blocking is amazing and she looks so beautiful, defintely a new era and side of Clark I've never seen before. Excited for more!

We welcome you with open arms if you ever decide to come back! The memories of nyc will always stay with us at least 💗
Good lord this is amazing, St Vincent has blessed us yet again and my life will never be the same
This video is so beautiful, Annie! Thank you so much for sharing it with the world.
This always reminds me of a couple of people who, without them my hometown just lost the zesty flavour and in spite of what I tried couldn't replace it. Great stuff

I'm so thankful I heard this striking song years before I saw the video. Music is less subjective.
Looove the colorplay in this video!!! I can't wait for the album and to see the tour!!!
Welcome back, Annie. We missed you.
The song has definitely grown on me. The atmosphere in the chorus is just on another level
New Love wasn’t true love back to you love
That line resonates with me so much
Just incredible. Such an amazing work of art. I love you Annie Clark!
Tyler Beckley she's brilliant!!
that wink at the end cured the last 12 years of my depression
I love the aesthetic of the video!
💜💜💜
Long Nguyen usa
Long Nguyen yes me too. Looks like a bubble gum commercial
its like a target commercial if you stayed up over 24 hrs
check out this new york video to. th-cam.com/video/ga4iUckOVdY/w-d-xo.html
New Yorkers will love this goo.gl/iithRe ,, oh and y'all from Chicago too!
absolutely beautiful, what an interesting and unexpected visual direction for her! When I watched it I felt like it was a tribute to the protagonist of the song.
The colors remind me a lot of the Digital Witness video. It's cool. Very cool!
Priya Phadtare Also of her featurette in XX!
Don't forget the vertical window blinds!
Oh that video was a masterpiece!
FUCKIN YESSSSS
there's a huge difference, though
those colors were muted, grey-ish, pastel. these are loud, bright, neon
Her compelling use of color and art now finally exceeds the attraction of her actual music.
1:30 the girl in purple with the cyan balloon looks amazing in those colours holy shit
As a painter who studied art, I must say that her videos are very innovative and reminiscent of pop art and her style is unique.
perfect NY music... reminds me of a time where searching for love in all the wrong places and partying all night long was a runaway train the youth could never escape.
Seeing her live was awesome
Yaaas ❤❤❤❤❤
😭😭😭 I love this song so much

Every shot in this vid is so visually appealing
Love the Astor Place black cube. Iconic. Classic. Brilliant video. nice storyboarding and art direction.
This is visually magnificent. I've been loving this song for a quite a while 💜
Thank you! From: Scranton, Pennsylvania
I hope the record contains a hyper-psychotic track. Like how 'Marry Me' had 'Your Lips Are Red', Strange Mercy had 'Northern Lights', 'St Vincent' had 'Bring Me Your Loves'
this has to be one of the most beautiful and aesthetically pleasing videos ive ever watched
so many underrated artists in the world ugh;-;
Too good to go mainstream.
Frank Benlin after 1 year, i totally agree with you
@@lordescorner Anticipation is the best.
1:55 - Anyone else at this point in the video from Ann Arbor, Michigan say “hey that looks like our Cube!” And then research it and realize there is an exactly the same spinny Cube in NYC?
See, St. V is educational as well as insanely talented. 👏🏼
2:00 OKAY i'm melting
Beautiful. This video, The Aggeles And Pills are so beautiful
Best female guitarist in my opinion...
Agree
The colors are so nice and pleasing
1:53 cube shot was pretty cool
Here because I finally watched WeCrashed. What a nice cover of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody”.
This is so aesthetically pleasing and beautiful! ♥
Audrey W without question!
i just love that she gave a very colorful music video to this sad song
I come back to this video at least once a month, it gives me so much inspiration.
I love your color of music. You're the hero to me like the light of covering Astor. Really thanks to you.
So excited for this!!!
I can't wait to see this beautiful creature, this underrated guitarist at the Ancienne Belgique again this month! :D love you St.Vincent! OXO! let me be your cheerleader!
I missed her!
oh my god I needed such a song so much, thank you very much!
okey... this is beyond of what my mental capacities are able to process
don't watch another video, then, or your mind will explode 🤣 I'm super new to her too..... ill stick to the music for now, the mvs are cray cray
The definition of creativity
Such a perfect song for the perfect city. I want to be back in New York City.
And it turns out I’ll be there in eight months! Yay! Future home :))
I fell in love with this woman last night....Watched her on AustinCity Limits because I couldn't sleep. ..
Sweetie, YOU ARE DIFFERENT AND ALL THAT!
Oh, another pop art extravagancy! That's really something special.
Queen
this is quite emotionally vulnerable
How did they make that swan not kill Annie and everyone else on set?
Polly Archer animal handler probably drugged it
i forgot where i read it, but they put this swan on set because it was known for being super friendly and calm. although, wanted to eat the styrofoam stuffing from the couch cut in half.
annie got dat aminal magnetism
Polly Archer honestly
There was a PA assigned to guard her
Oh Greggy Jamie, thank you for this gem
First time listening to her and surprised her music is so good! Reminds me of regina spektor and ingrid michaelson etc etc i mean all these female musicians are awesome af!!! Music is cross-generational !!!
What else can you say - this is a fucking beautiful song with a lot of heart
Here after the WeCrashed ending song, what a MF amazing show!!
Great melody!!! Did Wes Anderson or Godard direct this video?
Annie gave us 3 minutes of rich white woman on hallucinogenics doing errands in Manhattan
PastAsylum95 right?! Real art only comes from poor minority populations in small towns...apparently.
Are you mad that she's rich or that she's white? Or perhaps the combination?
but i mean like, you thinking the vid looks like pricey garbage is kind of the narrative of the video.
Im not mad at all! I love this video lmao
Very lush and tongue-in-cheek in aesthetic (Carlotta's ass notwithstanding).
*This song is one of those really nice surprise recommendations in my playlist.*
"New love wasn't true love, Back to you, love."
WOW!!!!
I am so in love
with this woman
OMG this VIDEO FOREVER! St V at her Finest!
omg Annie can play guitar AND piano with her legs
And sing with her mouth
And go without blinking
it's funny... I had a dream about her playing piano with her legs.. years ago..!
She's a very talented woman.
Doctor y
Love that fresh vision of #newyork #stvincent!
O clipe está lindo e a música é linda! 😍😍😍😍
This song + visual masterpiece Breaks my heart Annie! In a good way.
To the horizon.
Who is here from WeCrashed? Also this song belongs in Billions
I LOVE YOUUUUUU...... GOD BLESS YOU....
SUCH A GOOD VIDEO
