i'd love just love to go state side how did you get a visa ? I unfortunately live in Birkenhead and its worse now no industry no infrastructure nothing ! they ignore it its not talked about the government wouldn't even aknowledge b'head . the media wouldn't even consider reporting on the issue , the majority live in adject poverty and its ignored everyone just lives scared on the edge nobody does anything whatsoever , they just accept it they accept their fate and keep their heads down and just live pretty much in poverty and despair , the kids go to school hungry the teachers keep reporting it, most parents cant afford the uniform its a desperate place ready to explode .ifyour on the dole you get 73.10 pounds and pence , it doesn't rise with inflation its been that way for 4 years the same rate and food prices just keep going up and up , gas and electricity up 47% from 2012 and they are rising again in October 2018 ,I know people who literally sit in the dark no electricity no gas just waiting for the pittance they get to put it in the meters ,fuel poverty its crazy poor horrible place to live and bring kids up horrible , and your treated like absolute scum in the job centre its like the mid 19th century gallows or work houses , them upper class scum pof the earth ,posh rich spoilt kids , the prime minister the chancellor , and the mayor of London all went to the same school ? how is that possible
? they have hit the poorest so hard way harder than thatcher , now they sanction people for hardly no reason they stop their benefits for weeks giving a quarter of the benefit like if your sanctioned you get 27 pounds a week hardship payment while your appealing centres sanction it goes to a decision team ? and they have targets for job centres , its mad if your late signing on you get a 14 or 28 day sanction or you havnt got sufficient evidence that you have been looking for a job and I mean pages and pages of evidence which most people just don't meet the criteria , they say you have breached your job seekers agreement , in Birkenhead they sanction at least 5 people a day and the security stand over him or her when the staff member orders the sanction then if people get angry as they are already on the scrap heap the security drag them out with a number to call to appeal and ask for a hardship payment which has to be paid back out of your benefits if they get reinstated , so you don't get your jobseekers allowance just 27 quid , and your told the soup kitchen is on argyle street , some for 4 weeks on 27 notes a week ? some 6 weeks even 8 there was a man who was on it for 12 weeks , if your sanctioned you lose your housing benefit too , so your landlord wants you out and even when they reinstate your benefit they don't back date it so you owe your land lord whatever was the period you were sanctioned , its the worst kind of society ever . they will sanction you for almost anything and they have security to remove the person even if they are calm and say nothing the security say they have to leave right now we will escort you out the building , this is the worst attack on the poor ever , and now the bedroom tax they take 18 or 20 off you each week if you just happen have a spare bedroom ? really someone needs to fight back

Merseyside has created its own problems,The actions of the people has eventually caught up with them,Strikes in the ship yards the docks and the factories,So the companies take their buisness elsewhere,It went on for so long that the reputation as workshy strikers will always be there,The people responsable only thought about "today" and not about tomorrow.

No things are they way they are because good paying industrial jobs have now been outsourced to China or Mexico etc. More money for the guys at the top--that is all. You can never compete with the wages paid in those countries. Just an excuse to blame the unions. When all the factories in Europe/N. America were buzzing with jobs, the surrounding areas were not the dump heap, crime laden areas they are now. No jobs, no money...no futures.

I do feel for these people, my sympathy disappears when drugs and theiving are involved. i dunno why, but i actually think the pro was quite fit. anyway, they pulled down the rivers estate cos it had such a bad reputation, its quit spooky as the roads and the streetlights are still there. apart from the guy who still lives there on ilchester road, fighting the machine. fair play to him like hehe.

Very interesting. Could you post part 1 too please? And who is Nikki?
I was born in Birkenhead & it makes me sad & angry to see how run down it is & how little the council are doing about it. Beautiful old houses are left to rot instead of being sold to developers to be renovated. The council even want to demolish the historic Birkenhead Library, opened by George V! They've already demolished the original 1856 Library!
When will they learn that you can't BUY history? When it's gone, it's gone.

Hello,Please bear in mind that this documentary was made in 1989 so things have changed. The drugs culture has a more acceptable face regarding the use of them for recreational porposes.Heroin addiction in Birkenhead is as big a problem as any other town.Claughton Village has the same issues as other parts of Birkenhead and is no better than the North End.

Still no jobs. The un-employed do get slightly more help these days than they did back then but the situation is still bad. The actual area that this documentary was filmed in was demolished about 10 years ago, that seems to be the solution to problems in this country, buldoze the area and let the problem infest another area.

@bu11d06 I was in Wallasey, Leasowe, and spent a while in the North end, I left the area in 1996, I know there are a lot of bag heads and other ner do wells in the area, but most of the people I met were decent people, who I've kept in touch with ever since. Most of the wrong uns tended to be in the North end, the Leasowe, Ford and other estates. Howevr, living in amongst them, were also decent people, who deserved better.

No investment in the area since Thatcher destroyed the ship yards and docks. Put Birkenhead in decline and its never recovered from it.
