- A short film I shot in 2 days in 2005. During the run up to Liverpool being European Capital of Culture 2008 I found a housing estate whose residents had been pushed & pulled in all directions in order to create a new 'space age' estate. It did not quite go to plan.
They let these places get run down, so they are worth less. Then developers buy cheap and sell at hyper-inflated prices. It's a crime.
I thought it was to group poor people into areas and let them become poorer.

I actually live on where this estate was, and seeing how it used to be shocks me. All the old houses have been knocked down, the crime rate has decreased dramatically, and nice newly built houses have been built around the whole place. Completely different atmosphere to this video and even looks like a different planet to this. Mad

How depressing. I feel sorry for decent folk who had no choice but to live there. A similar estate in Hull is in the process of being demolished. Passed it once. You would feel like a sitting duck living there, afraid to leave your house.
When they said that lady was a poet I thought yeah right, but her poem was actually really good, and I don't usually like poems. You can tell she is writing from the heart.

When built, this was a beautiful and much sought after estate. I remember it. Slums are NOT built... ya know?

I saw photos of this estate when new in the early 30s and it looked beautiful,neat and tidy, tended gardens attractive cottage type look to the houses.I bet the first residents coming from real slums thought they were in heaven.

Living in Liverpool..ive never been to this area..but im told its not like this now in 2018...all big cities have places like this though.. in Liverpool you have the countries best architecture..best waterfront etc..and i can show you houses worth millions of pounds..lovely areas.. There are places falling to bits in London..manchester birmingham..glasgow..bristol..etc..

The city planners should be sacked for allowing a whole estate to get like this. Boarded up houses spread like wildfire in any part of the country. And though the police might feel like they're being asked to parent these kids, ignoring the problem is not acceptable.
And then rich developers come in, buy it all dirt cheap, move all the inhabitants out, demolish it all, put up rich houses and sell for astronomical profits.
These places have nothing on similar areas in Glasgow.

It is sad. A lot of these low income places have some very nice people living in them and the areas are nice, well kept. Then you get one rotten apple move in and that's it. All the way down from there. They should monitor families in these places. This estate, like so many around the UK, is put into deliberate managed decline. The end game, is making areas so bad that nobody objects when the local council does a deal with a wealthy developer or house builder for the land. It's not ethnic cleansing, it's social cleansing.

Mr PIGGY I'll take a look. I know the south of Italy as had various things said about it. My mate has moved out to Italy, quite a few years ago, and now is looking at living in Naples.
Pretty rough although I reckon Bentilee in Stoke-on-Trent isn't far behind. It's the largest Council Estate in Europe. Similar kind of awful conditions. They've actually forcefully evicted some of the poorest families (in about 2006), based on plans to rebuild the estate, but the council cut funding, so those houses now sit empty. As you can imagine, there's tonnes of squatters, arsonists and drug dens, tip rats. The genuine residents are being mugged, shot, and robbed by the criminals who have 'moved in'.
Politicians? Fucking useless the lot of them.

The council estates should be ripped down and things rebuilt. All of the problems you are talking about are as of a result of the welfare state.
Welfarism has caused this on a grand scale. People cannot build houses because the planning is controlled by the state/councils that in turn also build these massive estates.
Planning permission today is now nearly the cost of a house.
The average three bedroom suburban house should cost no more than £50K and with the lower average being about £30K.
At present the average is about £130k. If you are interested in economics this should send alarm bells ringing.
The problems are much bigger than people realize.

Just been looking at houses on the boot estate. Looks like a good place to bring up our kids.
Those houses are of good solid pre-war construction and with TLC they will last for hundreds of years. They are better built than a lot of the modern jerry-built rubbish of the type where one can hear the neighbours stirring their tea. The problem with "slums" ancient and modern is nearly always the people so bulldozing homes won't help.
Take the case of a rough council estate in Plymouth Devon. One of the tenants exercised his right to buy then after the requisite amount of time had elapsed he sold the house. The buyers were a couple who worked in banking and insurance but as most of the people on the estate were on the dole, the new owners automatically became hate figures.
Allegedly the hassle started off with "keying" cars and deflating tyres. Next came broken windows. Finally a pile of old firewood was stacked against their front door and lit whilst they were at work. The Fire Service put out the fire and saved the house but the Police advised the couple to move immediately and not to go back but instead go and live somewhere else. The couple had to board-up the property and abandon it. One can surmise that they would still be paying a mortgage and Council Tax on a property that was of no use to them and presumably they would have also had to pay hotel bills. I was not told which estate it was but I suspect that it was The Swillies which was so bad that the council renamed it. The new name is North Prospect but allegedly the "rth" is superfluous! These houses were made from a faulty type of block, the council bought back houses that they'd sold at market value and re housed the council tenants, the whole estate was built the same so they weren't solidly built houses. I spent 12 years driving a local bus through there every night, like any place, there were good and bad people.
Urban decay is global. This film is well outdated but a bad name is easily gained and difficult to lose. I've always lived in rough areas, and I live here in Norris Green. Henry Boot was one of the architects back in the 1920s, hence the nickname. Some houses were constructed using cinder blocks for cheapness and subsequently suffered from subsidence. I live in a brick house with my wife, rented from a social landlord who required two references each before we could sign. Some properties are reserved for problem families who don't submit references, so we're discriminated against for being decent. The authorities must think that good manners will rub off on difficult people; would be nice if it worked.
