Is the 2020 Toyota Camry Hybrid a BETTER Hybrid than the Honda Accord?

  • The Camry Hybrid takes Toyota's excellent reliability but now with major fuel savings. Under the hood is a 2.5L inline-4 combined with an electric motor to produce 208HP and mated to a CVT transmission. The Camry Hybrid's exterior has a very distinctive front fascia, wheels and rear. On the inside you will find all of the great features that makes the Camry a joy to drive on the road. Is the 2020 Toyota Camry a better fuel saver than the Honda Accord Hybrid?

    great review as always joe...technically the camry and accord do not have a cvt, the hybrid setup just spins the electric motor faster which results in a cvt like operation. and i bet it is the reason those 2 typically get better real world mpg over the koreans who lately have been using entirely conventional trans. will be interesting to see how the new sonata hybrid turns out..

    As much as I like how much faster the accord can get from 0-60, I love the look on the Toyotas a lot more, especially with the TRD model that im interested in getting. Im not some racer so to me, 60MPH is 60MPH, yet im still able to have a car that looks like I race lol. Getting to 60mph between 5 and 6 seconds is more than enough for me. The look on the TRD as well as the growl of that exhaust right from the factory has me sold and I dont have to spend and extra thousand or two just to go to Hondata, buy the kit, go to a tuner and have it installed properly. Hopefully next yr when I do get the 2021 TRD itll have everything it has now but in an AWD format

    This is a car, in the form of a reliable transportation, in the shape of a sedan. Nothing too flashy, nothing too shabby. Toyota does know how to make this kind of cars, and I have to admit that they are doing great. If you want anything more, then you shouldn't be looking at Toyota Camry.

    Joe why do they have different batteries on the lower trim?

    • @howardkerr8174
      @howardkerr8174 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      What's truly wild is that the cheaper LE trim gives you mpg numbers about on par with a Prius. Result? A car that manages to be larger, faster, and just as economical as a Prius without the space age styling.
      I am guessing that what is left out of the more expensive trim levels sort of paid for the added expense of the different battery. It should be noted that the more expensive trims use wider/LESS aerodynamic wheels and tires and the added "extras" weigh more (a sunroof, for example, is heavy and is not available on the LE) and as a consequence the heavier car might not benefit from the batteries.

    "...We purchased the Camry for $26,968 and traded it in for $13,000, about 2.5 years later and with over 42K miles on the odometer. These miles were well above average and affected the Camry's trade-in value. That said, we could've easily gotten a few grand more on the private market if we would have sold it ourselves. Profit versus convenience is something owners have to decide for themselves.
    It ultimately equated to 51.8% depreciation. However, it is difficult to compare this outcome directly to the result for any other long-term car because we typically keep a long-termer for just 12 months or so. Edmund's longterm

    @jeffjo8732 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Neither the Camry nor the Accord has what is commonly called a CVT, which is a pulley and two conical gears. Both call theirs an eCVT, but it means different things. The Camry has an "electronically controlled" CVT, which is a planetary gearset connected to the engine and two (not one) motor-generators. The engine's rpms are varied by electronically controlling whether the MGs act as motors or generators. The Accord has an electrically-coupled CVT. There is usually no mechanical connection at all; the engine drives a generator, and the electricity drives the motor.

Initial quality and feature set is a win. If you don't put on a lot of miles you might be okay with a 60 month. Don't expect more than 120k from a Hyundai without spending thousands on repairs.

    I've had my 2020 Camry Hybrid XLE for about four weeks now. I picked it over the Accord and Sonata because of some of the fascinating technology in it. I guess my XLE is a little better equipped than your test car. The bird's eye view when the back-up camera is on fascinates everyone who see it. The hybrid gives you a score (for fuel efficiency) on every trip (from 1-100). But it's really cool at night. This is unlike any Camry I've had before (I've had four since the 1990s, three of them hybrids). The neon tail-lights are way cool. The interior lighting is subtle but quite nice. I also have a heads-up display (very useful), lane assist, and automatic high beams. Really, this Camry is better equipped than the Lexus I traded in for it. I just love this car.

    My family has the exact same car. It drives and feels premium, almost like a Lexus. Thanks to the TNGA platform, the car is very comfortable to ride and sporty (consider it is a family sedan). And it has a spare tire whereas the Honda Accord does not. However, one shortcoming that does bother us is there is no memory seat. It is a 40k car. Toyota cheap out on this one. C'mon Toyota.

    I wish folks would emphasize the difference in mpg between the Camry LE hybrid and the other Camry hybrids. The LE is significantly better and this is often blurred in these reviews.

    • @jeffjo8732
      @jeffjo8732 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Camry LE gets its "much better mileage" mostly by sacrificing traction, with 10% less rubber on the road. And some handling due to smaller wheels.
      In 2021 models:
      Camry LE Hybrid: 16" wheels, 205mm tires. EPA 52 mpg
      Accord (except Touring) Hybrid: 17", 225mm, 48 mpg
      Camry SE/XLE/XSE Hybrid: 18", 235mm, 46 mpg
      Accord Touring Hybrid, 19", 235mm, 43 mpg
      Adjusted for these sizes, the difference in mpg is not significant in any of these model;s. But the Accord is 0.5 to 0.8 seconds faster to 60 mph.

The vents and usb on the back passengers should be also standard for convenience so people in the back doesn’t keep asking you for your charger or turn the AC all the way up! I like the trunk space is awesome in that car. Overall the price is very high I would only pay 20k for this car is a Camry hybrid not a luxury car.

    The Accord Hybrid does not have a CVT. Really takes me out of the review when you get basic facts wrong.

    • @jeffjo8732
      @jeffjo8732 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Neither the Camry nor the Accord has the traditional "belt-and-pulley" CVT that Raiti implies, but both call it an eCVT.
      The Camry's "electrically controlled" CVT is still a mechanical device; the engine drives both the wheels and a generator, and they use how much power is drawn by the generator to control rpms. So it drives much like a CVT, but without reliability issues.
      The Accord's is an "electrically-coupled" CVT. There is no mechanical connection at all. In most situations - including all where performance matters - the engine drives only a generator at its most efficient operation point, and the car drives just like an EV. Because it is an EV, just not a "Battery" EV, or BEV. I personally prefer to call it a vCVT, for "virtual" CVT.

Toyota earned enough name and now they start cheating to make cheap builds and sell on high price.. Also it never touch 44 or 47 mpg. I get only 40 or 41 if try to get it drive like gtand maa. Normal driving get around 35mpg. Plus if u drive 10 mile trip or less u get only 25 to 28mpg. To get 40 u have drive more then 20 miles trip like a grandmaa
