What I like about Japan is that everything is so polite and orderly. And the nature seems amazing. Hot springs and stuff. And a funny (although maybe not in a humorous way though) is the liknesses between shintoism and latvian religion/beliefs. I find it fascinating. 😊

Interesting and orderly indeed. Have you read Ikigai: The Japanese secret to a long and happy life by Héctor García, Francesc Miralles? Great book.

My favourite Japanese thing? It's Japan. It was the last visit of my career as a Royal Marines Musician. Tokyo is an amazing place with fantastic things to see and do. But the one thing that sticks in my memory is when I was walking up a street with a smoking colleague. It wasn't too far from the Imperial Palace when from nowhere, appeared a little Japanese man dressed in hi-viz with a dustpan in his hand; it was a no-smoking street, and this was twenty-one years ago! I love a passport notebook. We're travelling over the next few months, which would be fantastic for note-taking-more ideas for word counts.

When you've asked: what Japanese things you like? Giant Japanese salamander sprang to mind. I used to look after them in our aquarium. But after considering a bunch of other things: ukioe, haiku, hanafuda, zen, ikigai and Japanese macaques, I would settle for kaizen. This is a Japanese philosophy and practice of doing things little step by little step. Nice video Martin and I like the way you handle these notebooks. It brings some nice dynamics to the screen. 😉 Have a nice day. 👋

@@sketchley Yes! I have it on a book shelf above our fish tank and it's a joy to read some chapters at random. It's almost like a little chat with a wise old friend. 😉 And I love the little diagram on the back cover: What you love, what the world needs etc.

Ok, if you want humorous: how 30 years ago, upon learning someone was Portuguese, any Japanese person would mention Eusébio (footballer), Rosa Mota (marathon Olympic medalist) and Amália (fado singer - it’s a specific style of music). They would also immediately tell you to visit Nagasaki because that was where the Portuguese had given the Japanese the rifle gun, thus supposedly triggering their technological development! Talk to 5 Japanese to ask for directions and watch all roads eventually lead to Nagasaki 😅
