    Brilliant and honest content, however, I have to say something, after years of working in a traditional studio of graphic design I think that the romantic thought of working at a design studio and doing side projects on the side is unreal (at least for me) - after a whole day at work in front of the computer you need to rest, health comes first, read something, talk to people and your girlfriend, work out and eat well. Also, design needs creativity and energy and after a full day at the office I most times felt drained creatively. I know life is hard and reality bites - BUT if you want to do side projects just do them and quit the boring traditional design studio you are in. Those are my two cents anyway.

    LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! You're so right-on and straight to the point. My dream is to join the vanlife movement, traveling in my van full-time while working freelance as a web designer. That means I won't be staying near my customers. Do you have any special advice for my slightly unusual plan?

    These information was really helpful for me. Thank you so much. I started this path recently and I always have lots of questions about my choices. Some people tell me since I don’t have Html, Css or Java script knowledge I can’t be successful in this career. Are these necessary for me to gain a job? To what extent are these skills necessary to get a job?

    Applying for a traditional job, what title do you search on indeed? Web Designer or Ux/ui designer

    Would you say knowing photoshop, illustrator, html css and javascript enough to be a web designer? Or should I learn another software like sketch?

    • @PaytonClarkSmith
      @PaytonClarkSmith  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ruben esquivel i would say that is more than enough! Obviously the better you become with those softwares and the more softwares you learn, you may be able to provide more value to clients. But there is no status quo.

    Nice Video Payton, i question regarding freelancing. How you find your clients? Are you in any freelance platform? Or what do you think is the best way to find them?

    • @PaytonClarkSmith
      @PaytonClarkSmith  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question! I started out just working within my family and friend relationships to get my first projects. Once I had a couple successful projects under my belt I got more confidence to reach out to local businesses in my area and create a need and show them a solution! I also look for opportunities to work off of referrals and also businesses that I already interact with (when I go to the dentist I start a conversation about it). This was they feel an obligation to at least hear me out because I am already doing business with them!
      At the end of the day it is all about exponential growth. The more clients you get, the more case studies and success stories you have the brings more clients naturally!

    Hi Payton,
    I am a freelance graphic designer looking g to get good clients. I am actually making qround 30 thousands dollars annually but I know I can make more liable around 100 thousand in a year. I don't have a website but I freelance in some market places like upwork, fiverr, peopleperhours etc. but the clients are a bit cheap. I know that if I make my website and do SEO, the game will change. Am I right or what's your piece of advice for me?

    I have a day job in a different field. I enjoy web designing and graphic design a lot and so starting to dive in to Web design world as freelancer. I am very inspired by you and your videos are very helpful. Is it possible that you can help me get going by showing how to create an appealing proposal or make client questionnaire for starters? I design using WordPress.

    Hi Payton, I love your business model, it's something I'm working on emulating myself. I was wondering, if you have a client who wants a 3D design on their site or some form of digital art that you don't have the skills for yourself, do you outsource that work? And if so where to? I was considering fiver. Thanks

    • @broctonnunns280
      @broctonnunns280 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I know this answer may be late but might be able to help! A good option would be fiverr! They have tons of 3d modelers and animators. Then, take that animation, throw it in After Effects (export using bodymovin plugin) and place that into your website as a Lottie animation! Webflow has a complete tutorial on this and it's awesome

    Thanks for the video. I use WordPress to design or must it be coded before I can fall into the category of Web designers. Was hoping to apply for immigration to Canada through Web designers and developers route but since I'm not fully grounded in coding but have designed over 10 websites using themes , I did not bother. I felt unfit. Though I have knowledge of html and css, Please what's your advise. I even integrate email for clients after building their websites.. thanks.

    Just saw this video and this youtuber designers does not mentioned how hard it is to get a job if u are an entry level designer. Most companies goes for experience one and u will end taking prt time jobs but ur bills always coming. I regret taking designer program. Plus with the rise of wix and other diy website platform how can they say designers are in demand like anyone can make their own websites these days

    • @johnkakuk
      @johnkakuk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      1. Everybody started out with no experience. I built my first client website for $50. If I can do it, why can’t you?
      2. If you find yourself competing for the job against the very people who need the website, you’re either going after the wrong market or your skills aren’t up to par. IMO, it’s almost always the first option.
      3. Companies don’t want a designer with experience: they want a designer that can accomplish their mission. They just think that only experienced designers can do that. If you believe you can and can make the client believe it too, apply anyway. People don’t buy a drill because they want a drill, they buy a drill because they want a hole.
      Get out there and make it happen! 🔥🔥🔥

      @@johnkakuk Couple of things i have monthly bills and rent i cannot fuck around with $50 starting client. You was prolly living in ur mama's basement when u 1st started my situation is diff. Bottom line i should have taken trade instead of this bs design thing. This is good for young adults who is just starting out in life.

      @@knives26 then do it on the side? you don't have to be young to succeed with something. maybe it'll take a little longer since you seem to need a paying job already, but you can get there eventually.
      BUT, swearing and complaining online about how stupid everything is just cuz its doesn't seem to be working for you right now WON'T get you anywhere. If web design is something you want to eventually do, change your mindset and figure out a way. (there isn't "one way", everyone's story will be unique and different)

    • @knives26
      @knives26 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@filetmignon9978 its stupid bcoz youtubers does not mention the hardship and the bs of this industry. I gave this up and pursue finance instead and thats is more clear future than web design/development! Its dead industry with the rise of diy websites and more and more business doing well without even having a website with the help of social media. Bottom line, if ur not the first to get in in the industry, its gonna be hard for you! Web design is dead as far as i can see!

    • @filetmignon9978
      @filetmignon9978 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@knives26 there ares soo many things wrong with what you said. there is a huge demand for designers, its in the statistics. the only thing wix solves is that small businesses can make the crappy websites themselves now. no proper business would use DIY builders. again the demand is huge,so its not just good if u were the first. Did you seriously expect this journey to be easy? finance is probably more difficult than web design. The need for sites has skyrocketed due to covid so social media is nowhere near enough to succeed.
