    I like the ingenuity of your work shop. Especially using that scissor jack for the lengths. I’ll have to incorporate that.

    I love the ingenious little jigs you use. That vertical panel saw is very clever. I have a huge Altendorf. It needs a space approximately 6.4 metres x 4.2 metres. I put thicker end boards on than you do. I get a lot of inspiration from you and your delightful partner. Thank you from Roy in the Blue Mountains outside Sydney Australia

    I think you are absolutely right. The four pieces compare very favourably with the eight accurately machines pieces for a National hive which is also made worse by the difference between brood boxes and supers. So, well done and thanks for sharing.
    On question I do have is that I always find ply, (even external), de-laminates when edges are left exposed. Is this a problem you experience?

    What a brilliant video, thank you so much for sharing the details. Love the car jack for fine adjustment prior to cutting with the radial saw. Also liked the method you have made for vertical cutting of the large sheets. Looks like a circular saw running on two mild steel round bars guiding the saw. Really great stuff. The Bees look really happy. Keep up the fantastic work, and these videos.

    Very nice video. I am not sure that all the cool wood joinery techniques would have been invented if people invented modern wood glue first. As Mr. Kalashnikov said, "Perfection is the enemy of good enough". I just made some drawers with basically this technique. but I think if I was going to make a lot at once like you do I might consider a jig to hold it square and then screw it together. ETA; Cool stop block.

    Hey Tim and Sandra, just wanted to say thank you for all of your amazing videos on bees and keeping them. I agree with your style 100% I like it a lot, I was thinking of doing something similar with a 10 frame langstroth, I did some math and the weight should be similar, about 5% heavier with a 10 frame 231mm langstroth full of honey vs the 12 frame 183mm deep frame on the rose hive. I have your book, and I was going to make a 10 frame styled after your rose. I am still thinking about it, not committing yet. But I like the idea of OSB.

    This is a great video. How long do your boxes usually last? Also is there a reason your hives are all painted red? I'm new to beekeeping and am trying to learn as much as possible before I jump in.

    Wonderful video thanks so much for taking the time to make it and share it. I was wondering though if you make your own frames and if so do you have a video explaining how to make them for the rose box in this video? And if not if you could provide a link (if you purchase them online) and information as to which frames fit into this Rose Box? Thanks again it is a huge help for me as well as for many others I'm sure!

  • @ficskull1816

    What's the difference and advantage of using a Rose hive over Langstroth and Top bar hives? I'm thinking about building a hive since a relative of mine is a beekeper, but I'm not sure what kind of beehive I should make.

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +The FicSkull TBH are tricky to use because the combs are not supported and can break easily. The others are both frame hives - it's just that Rose frames (and boxes) are all the same size and you don't use an excluder. The bees can cope with any of them so choose the one you like most and they'll be fine (probably!)

    Hi Tim, thanks for the rose give method!
    I'm going to purchase one next month and i've already read the book, I love it!
    I already have a national .
    I was wondering to convert from national to rose, is it possible to place the rose box UNDER the current single national brood box and just wait for the bees to move in ? With the thought perhaps at the end of the season. I could remove the national brood that was on top , accounting for enough stores etc ?
    Thanks again,
    Dominic

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, you can do it that way too, but don't be surprised if they haven't moved all their brood nest by the autumn - you might have to overwinter both boxes - but that's ok too. Good luck!

    Thanks for the info. I have purchased two of the Rose Hive Method books and have passed them on to other previously-kept-bees-but-got-frustrated beekeepers to share the knowledge, and the books encouraged them both to start beekeeping again!
    I'm using medium supers for my new hive (5 frame nuc arrives in May) and I think I made a fatal error- I bought an 8 frame hive. Given that this is 4 frames smaller than the rose hive OSBs, how much of a problem will this be? Should I switch my equipment to 10 frame before I get stuck with 8 frame equipment?

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +wishingbee No, 8 frames is fine. I just developed mine to fit the local standard parts - you could just use medium 8 frame boxes and achieve the same thing, couldn't you? Or would it be too unstable if it gets tall?

    • @juliecmeyer
      @juliecmeyer 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Excellent, thanks for the response! I've been worried about the width of the brood nest with the 8 frames. I don't think it'll get too wobbly, it looks like it should be stable at least to 6 or more boxes, easily, although now I'm off to google that scenario. I'd love it if my first hive in ages would be vigorous enough to test the height boundaries of an 8 frame system. :D

    • @WayOutWestx2

    Hi Tim, quick question please - what's the router bit for making the hand hold rebates likely to be called in UK? Do you have a recommendation where to get this shape bit? Sometimes special router bits can be frighteningly expensive. Also I wonder if the router needs to be one with a longer spindle than the ordinary cheap router machines to get that wide shallow handhold rebate? Is that why you swapped to the bigger router? Thanks!

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      kester ratcliff No idea what it's called Kester, sorry. They came in a box of assorted shapes for 20 euro, or something cheap like that. Have a look on Ebay? I think an ordinary router would do the job but you'd put the timber flat down on the bench and put the router directly on top. An ordinary round-ended router bit would work but you might need a few passes. Or you always just screw on a hand-hold!

    TIM I very much like all your videos as lots of other folks.
    I hope no one will mind me saying but I got a top popular USA brand router on Amazon and paid the duty to UK customs
    and it still was half the price of a similar quality brand here in the UK........ there's a program on telly called rip off Britain !
    I got the kit to turn it into a bench model but will fabricate the table when I get round to it so as to make it similar to Tim's 'moulder'. So long as the fabricator is ultra careful with those fingers & ends up with the amount they started with after a few DIY beehives ---- I shudder to think ---ouch. How much I ask is a finger worth?
    I'm confident Tim makes his own bee hives as well as saving a lot there is that sense of satisfaction when you put to use things of your own making. Sometimes the feeling is intense------ My first bit of Biodiesel I made for a few pence per litre = brilliant......
    I was grateful and still am from the very great help I got from the USA biodiesel makers.

    Thanks for great video and book!! I'm hooked on the Rose-method and plan to start up Rose-hives this spring. Question: Here in Norway things tend to get pretty cold in winter. Do you think 1/2 " ply would be too thin here? Would you wrap the hives or what? Thanks again for inspiring beekeeping!

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sigmund Barø Thanks Sigmund. I think it's mostly the air in and around the combs that insulates the overwintering cluster, not so much the wall of the hive. So (in theory!) the wall just has to stop the wind blowing the warmer air away. In practice, 1/2" ply works well here - but I wouldn't like to promise it would work for you. My advise would be to see what your local beekeepers do and learn from them. At least Norway is dryer than here! Best of luck!

    Wow Tim,
    Nice to see how you build the Rose hives and with tools that are very nifty.
    Will try and share your video on the Rose hive videos we did together, see if you can get some more traffic.
    Excellent job.
    David.

    Hi David, i'm live in Dublin and i'm doing my bee course at the end of this month. i am looking at building a national hive as i don't want my bee's in the supper, i am going to build 2 brood boxes this should be enough to hold about 15 ltrs so i'm told. Well if you have any advice for me i will be heading down to galway on the first of August for a holiday, if your near by id like to see your hives in action.

      Dj Eddie Lloyd Hi Eddie - I don't know if this was intended for me (Tim)? Good to hear you're making hives - best of luck with them. I don't use brood boxes though, or supers. Just Rose boxes which are all the same size.

      O right sorry about the name Tim. Yes it was meant for you. Is the honey Yield any different. Could i ask why you use the rose hive, i was looking at this type of hive myself but i didn't like the idea of the queen laying every where and larva all over the place, now correct me if i'm wrong. will any way are you near galway city, i'm in the galway bay for 3 days with my family for a short break.
      if you wouldn't mind id love to se your hives and how they compare to a national hive.

    Hi Tim have you ever thought of doing a CD start to finish of the making of the Rose Boxes, looking after the bees through out the year, and finally processing the honey? I realize that you do show some videos of the above mentioned, just a thought.

    Why do you like to replace boxes often? How often?

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dnice1541 The boxes don't last more than a few years anyway (4 maybe) so they need to be replaced - but that's good because they become full of dirt (and disease?). Just like us changing the bedsheets

    hi! i just bought my rose hive book! i have a question though? do i have to make my own frames to fit these boxes? Or can i purchase medium size frames?

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Dannielle Hernandez Hi Dannielle - if you have easy access to medium frames and boxes, just use them instead of Rose hives/frames. In Britain and Ireland mediums are not easy to get so I made my own.

      I am from Northern New England where the winters get cold. I was just wondering if the ply wood sides be enough installation? could I use a the 9"x2" planks instead?

    • @WayOutWestx2
      @WayOutWestx2  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the holes in and between the bees and combs that offer the best insulation - the hive shell mostly keeps the wind out. But, yes, you could use thicker wood, for sure. Either reduce the number of frames in each box or everything (floor, roof, crownboard) changes from being a square to being a rectangle. Good luck!

    We have a ridiculously low number of bees in my area. I even had to hand pollinate my vegetables last year with a watercolor brush! I absolutely love honey and beeswax, though. But I'm doubting I could keep a hive here. What happened to all the bees in America?

    • @athalia3661
      @athalia3661 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Too many jerks knocking down hives all the time. Probably decided to leave to better places.

    • @cotteeskid
      @cotteeskid 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      brightpurpleviking they did a story on 60 min here in Australia a few years ago about the US bees dying because of some bug or virus. A lot of bees now are imported from Australia or other places that are disease free. It is a massive issue that should be known, because without the bees, no pollination and as a result no food for an increasing population.

      +Harry Gillis do you mean plane the boards? They don't need to be smooth but they do need to be the correct size - so yes, plane them if they are too thick
