This dude in the middle with the hat is or dumb or was patronizing the maestro all the time like a baby, his tone is arrogant and face expressions were fake and dumb!!!

I remember turning up to a rehearsal with an old band of mine back in the early '00s, with my band mates already set up, and none other than Mr Pratt standing next to the bass stack. I almost had kittens. He joked that I thought I'd been replaced (and who could blame my bandmates!), but it turns out he'd popped down to listen to our material, as he'd been asked to produce a demo for us, by Steve O'Rourke (Pink Floyd's then manager), who was the uncle of our singer, and managing us at the time. It was surreal, going from learning about him in Bass Player magazine, and loving his records to seeing him face to face. He was a complete gent. Bought me a Guinness after our session, and likened my playing to Jah Wobble. A treasured memory. Thanks Guy!

Sharing my "story" with Guy Pratt.
Lisbon 1994, Pink Floyd went to do 2 concerts. I went to the 2nd with my parents.
I was a 13 year old short boy, and I was lucky enough to be on the front of the crowd, with my arms resting on the barriers, with Guy in front of me playing the bass.
At some point he realised there was a child (me) in there, and I remember he smiled at me some times. I believe he was happy to see a child enjoying the show.
Well, the concert was amazing, as expected, but what I most remember is what came at the end of the show.
When the band was receiving the applauses and thanking the crowd, Nick Mason threw a song allignment sheet, it bounced in someone's head, and my mom picked it up.
Mr. Guy Pratt threw me a bass pick, that fell into the pit, where the stewards were. So a steward noticed a pick falling, picked it up, and placed in his pocket. As the pick wasn't for him, Guy Pratt started yelling so he delivered the pick to me, but he ignored and kept it.
So, the story I tell everyone about my 1994 Pink Floyd concert, was that their bassist was a nice guy, threw me a pick, and the steward kept it.
Almost 30 years had passed but that memory remains very fresh. Now I look back and smile, but at the time, you can imagine that it left me very sad.
Well, and that was my "story" with Guy Pratt...

I love the "Like a Prayer" story. This was news to me: I swore I thought Randy Jackson played bass on that song and a lot of other Madonna hits. And Guy's right: the bass was smoking though still beautifully locked with great "bends" though absolutely no cliches without sounding off the groove. "Like a Prayer" is literally a masterpiece and Guy gave it exactly what it needed.

@@NoName-fo7mz The music industry used to get that right - that the "pop stars" of the day went into studios and the musicianship of the session players, the engineers, the songwriters - the level was so high that masterpieces could be produced. I believe artists are still making masterpieces though the industry was so stuffed with cash everyone could do "one" job instead of twelve.

Mike had nothing but nice things to say about Guy and this interview proves what Mike told me. What a fascinating bloke and an easy style. More of Guy please!

I must have bought and watched that pink Floyd VHS and DVD many times and remember thinking about that young Bass player performing and singing as he really stood out to me.

Your Marcus Miller video also comes to mind as for most of us the chance to meet these guys or hear them speak so openly is both treasured and appreciated.
You are doing a great job and I hope you continue to bring in and interview more of these gifted musicians who really are the reason why many of us own and play a bass.

I've always been interested in guitars and guitarists but Guy Pratt is the first bassist ever to gain my attention. My parents used to thrash their vhs copy of Pink Floyd's live Delicate sound of thunder and to this day I still prefer the live version of On the turning away over the studio version because of the fear of missing out on Pratt's monster bass in all its glory. Also I'm glad to learn about the Rockontuers podcast, I'll definitely be checking that out.

I don't even play bass but I found all this fascinating (I do try to play the guitar). Guy Pratt is a great raconteur and guest and amazing bass player.I must have seen him several times with post-Waters PF, as well as Gilmour and Nick Mason's Saucer. Just subscribed to his podcast on the strength of this. Thanks!

Loved this guys. Fantastic interview. I am so impressed to hear yet another 'rockstar' musician who feel nervous about a performance or realize the need to develop. Encouraging news for us mere mortals.
BTW, Guy is hilariously funny, especially @58:15 "...does it need to go in the goal, or can it go over the goal?" I'm still smiling over that one. Thanks SBL Team.

Great stories and amazing bass playing! Love that Octaved sound - killer tone all around, actually. Just wanna say that Delicate Sound of Thunder is still a favorite of mine when it comes to live albums and concert videos, even in 2023 it's an amazing show. Laughed my ass off through most of this too - great interview! Thank you to all involved for making this possible, can't wait to see the next one!

I had the honor to record Guy lay down a bass line for a Diana Ross song. Not only he was the amazing musician we all expected, but he was also incredibly kind, quick witted and thanked us to have invited him to the studio rather than sending him the file and letting him record at his home studio. It goes to show how important musicianship is to him, rather than pure technical ability.
