Id always say, 'if you cant say it, you cant play it' .... mostly it applies to the rhythm of the song... but it could slightly help with the notes and where the song is going... but to be able to vocalize it precisely then you should be able to have a grasp of whats going on, and then do it with your hands✋️

Thank you Steven! Motivation has been lacking. Although YYZ is a goal I've been working on and have accomplished most of it a while ago, I've stopped any kind of structured practice. I haven't been listening to the music I love (such as RHCP's) which has always motivated me in the past to pick up my bass. I'm also in a band that plays music that is hardly challenging. I have the time but I have lost the motivation. Gonna try this and I hope it sparks my motivation to practice again. Thanks again.

0:55. Nobody watching a bass video is watching a wrong video.
    Especially if it is this.

Very interesting. Helpful in cutting out non constructive practice, something i am often guilty of. Thanks

Your self challenge 9:20 reminds me of the 1980’s Space Invaders arcade game! You even get faster towards the end 😂😂😂

interesting, i challenged my self to learn sir duke, i learned bass by ear for soon 3 months and i can play sir duke at 75% no problem, i need some more time on it to manage it at 100% but im glad.
Slapping the bass is something i struggle with, i just can't find a good technique or make a good slap sound

Good info and didnt even show off. But i would add never get discouraged. Some songs are way more complicated than others. Breaking down the songs piece by piece is the only way to learn them. I dont know any musician that can play a song perfectly just opening a book and reading the music or tabs. I think a lot of people actually believe you can. I dont think it works that way or at least not with me anyway.
LOL. My reward? Jamming out alone with CDs to where i can scratch my nose or other parts and drink as much as i want and play rockstar in my music room. My limit at gigs is two drinks until its over. Gig meaning I am playing. As for four hours of practice? Turn the TV on and the amp down and do those simple exercises. Or even songs because muscle memory is the biggest part of playing music and not making mistakes or at least recovering from them fast. And everyone makes mistakes. And the songs you hear that are recorded are a perfected take out of how many takes? Hell even on youtube are recorded too. Hmm. That's a thinker, right? So never ever get discouraged from learning or playing music. Always at your own pace. Who cares if it takes a week to learn a song? Then your reward is playing it with the track or playing your own gigs.
BTW been playing guitar since 13 and bass since 25 which means both and now 56 and watching videos like this. Been playing gigs since 16 so... someone else can always teach you something.

Exactly, I have learned to play Piano, Cello, bass guitar, and a bit of wind instrument stuff in school, baritone horn was the main one.
And I SUCKED at every one of 'em when I started, and sucking at stuff is the first step to learning any skill, we all fell when we were learning to walk as babies right?
Fact is, playing music, is making an inanimate object sing, that shit is nuts when you think of it, just doing it, even badly, is still doing something amazing, never crap on yourself, especially when you're just starting out, because the first step to learning a skill, is learning how to deal with failing at it until you build up your body memory, flexibility, agility, and stamina, to not fail as often, and then, as your hands and mind adapt to the instrument, you start making good clear sounds, and progress from there to playing scales and arrangements and songs, usually fairly poorly at first, but progress doesn't happen unless you have progress to make, right?

If getting to play your bass isnt your go to reward, this isnt the right instrument for you. 😉
