  • In this video we push further into Cape Cornwall Tin mine, further than we ever had before. Previous explorations were halted when we reached workings what go progressively deeper water the further we explored.
Cape Cornwall mine was a small tin mine which opened in 1838 during the Cornish tin mining boom.
The mine changed owners a few times who added various buildings and machinery to the site, before being abandoned for good in 1883.
The plan of the mine shows the depth of the workings, most of which extend way below sea level and are now flooded, however, a small section is still possible to visit from one of the mines adit drainage tunnels.
As always, please dont attempt to repeat what you have seen in this video unless you are an experienced and suitable equipt mine explorer. This mine has many dangers, mostly falls into workings below, some of which there is no way out of, and part of the mine is prone to collapse.
Hope you enjoy the video and dont forget to subscribe for future mine adventures.

I'm totally fascinated by these mine explorations, and I was delighted to stumble across your channel (Cornwall has a huge place in my heart - the US ones are interesting but there's no heart connection for me!) but my gosh, those squeezy bits are no fun to watch.

Impressive how they used to mine the ores in old times with rudimentar tools and candles as lights. Great video

Just found your videos and enjoyed them so much, especially that you explain the history of the mine and show a diagram. So I subscribed. Keep up the great work! :-)

Those “man-trap” holes in the floor past the iron-gate look treacherous! You couldn’t safely climb out of them without rescue??
Incredible those nearly vertical narrow stopes!!
I’ve finally seen the tin lode (ore) the miners were after! A pity the workings ceased during your float, and again you pointed out what they were after!

Nice vid!! But you didn't explore Cape Cornwall mine, sorry! In the old pics you showed from the cliffs, over the mine to the cape in the background, the mine on the cape is Cape Cornwall. The one in the foreground that you entered from Priests Cove is in fact St Just United. I've looked into the adits but never gone exploring inside!

    • @BenoCam
      @BenoCam  ปีที่แล้ว

Ha really ? I didn’t realise that. I knew there were further adits out on the headland but assumed they were part of the same set up. I think they have now been sealed ? We couldnt find any obvious open ones.

I saw a video some time back of a Room & Pillar mine on the east coast of Canada where most of the mine was under the ocean. Much of it was flooded but there was still plenty there to explore.

I find these vids fascinating, but also a little scary lol. You didn't seem to need a paddle to go down the tunnel though, could have pushed off the walls with your hands.

While i am here Ben. Your broken glass is from a filled in shaft on the gold course, there used to be other rubbish. First time i was in there would be about 1987 - ish

I explored all that back in the 1990s and did a rough survey. My adventures were reported in the journal of the now defunct West Cunbria Mine Research Group. I have digitised it all for limited circulation, but a lot of the info is now out of date. I wore a wet suit and used an old inner tube for buoyancy which i still have and is still full of air, never been pumped up since original use.!

Have you got a link to your survey Roy? I've got a few of them for different mines here in Wales

@@shonkytours2039 Hi Chris, unfortunately the one I did of these workings was very poor and did not include everything, and was never even digitalised. The best one I did was in Wales, Catherine and Jane, it answered a lot of peoples questions.

@@royfellows5468 yes, I know Catherine & Jane well being close to me in Ffestiniog. Was planning on going there tomorrow funnily enough, but to a manganese mine we found a few weeks ago, which is right next door to Catherine & Jane. (could actually be same mine, because so close.) It's well hidden in thick trees and found big spoil heap and adit with deep stope and sort of slabbed steps going down stope but didn't have rope to get down. That's why going back. According to 1890 map it's a manganese mine, but on that map, there's no mention of Catherine and Jane, but instead the mine is called Bwlch Y Plwm lead mine, and on 1860 map just slate works. Yes I know Bwlch y Plwm is other side of hill also called penrhyndeudraeth lead mine, so not sure if map makers have made mistake. I've been down to the pump rod in c&j but there is an adit about 20 metres up from cross road in road/path that goes in few metres, then shaft going down. Have you abseiled down it?? Was going to see tommorow but if no point then can leave it 😊
As for surveys/reports, Parc was up there as best, got to be one of my favourite places

@@shonkytours2039 Sorry cant recall this, my survey of C and J is just workings at adit level. Been years ago, one of my pics in David Bicks second edition."Old Copper Mines". There is also Pantywrach, it was me who dug the upper afit just above the road. Years ago a group from Portmadog had ago at the blockage in DA but gave up.
Parc, the trip of trips is western Cwffty, I am meaning to do it again and get modern photo gear through, a bit of a challenge.v I dont reliably know whether the route is still open.

@@royfellows5468 yes can still get to cuffty. Instead of having to go down ladders and through deep water at end of level 2, you can now get to cuffty stopes up a ladder way at end of 2, installed few bolts to get across sheer drop stope and planks. Pity can't post photos here.
