- In todays video we are back to mid Cornwall to have another look at the old mine workings of wheal Jane.
Now we have looked here a few times on previous videos, so we are going to quickly push on past the first section and focus on the middle to the far end which has some interesting parts that many people often do not get far enough to see.
West wheal Jane was said to have been in operation by 1740, and worked by various companies until 1893.
By 1905 the mines had amalgamated under the new name of Falmouth Consolidated Mines, which dissolved around 1915.
In this trip we do the full through trip, starting at Tremayne shaft in the far North East and then coming out at Holly tree shaft down at the South West extent of the workings.
At one time these workings would have carried on toward the modern site of Wheal Jane mine but the passageways have now sadly collapsed or the link is now underwater.
As always with our videos, this is intended to be a virtual tour of the mine for you to sit in the comfort of your own home and enjoy, not a guide to follow to attempt to repeat this trip.
This mine has many dangers, and it would be huge operation to extract a casualty out from along this route if there were to even be a simple accident due to the difficult and confined environment.
Almost all the shafts have been capped, and the access points that do exist are on private land who will not welcome unannounced visitors and too many people visiting may well encourage restricted access or more fencing around these open shafts, which are well away from public footpaths.

My dad worked wheal jane back when it was open so fantastic to see you guys exploring it.
Ha bet he has some stories ! The modern section is deeper and is now almost totally underwater which is a shame ☹️
That brings back some memories & didn't think the through trip was still open. I did that through trip about 30yrs ago, with a couple of lads from Crofty. Thanks for the memories. 👍
When we first did it it did require a little big of digging at the end of the section called the great crush, which is a very unstable section. I think from what I have heard from older explorers that the route through several sections has changed slightly over the years as the ground has moved but there is still a route through… although it is quite a maze and easy to get lost along the way ! Very few people do the full through trip
My Uncle was a lift operator there for donkey’s years. Made redundant several times yet never missed a day’s work! Such was the running of the place at the end.
What a fantastic trip through an amazing mine. The blue waterfall was stunning, it looked very sketchy in places! but absolutely fascinating & scary to watch! Well done everyone. ❤😊👍

Nice one. You make these mine explorations look like a piece of cake but a lot of planning goes into them and a stack of post production. One of my favorites this one. Great 👍🏻 Full marks to that young lady; what a trooper.

I liked the overlay of the mine on the map, it demonstrated the size of the mine well. We were in the Prospect of Whitby pub in Wapping recently, they have a 200 year old pewter bar top, fascinating to think teh tin to make that would have come from a similar Cornish tin mine.

Amazing hike through vast extensive workings! Lots of Trial’n error to blaze a still existing passable route from Start-to-finish!

I found the Mine-workings superimposed over surface features to be quite revealing the sheer distances covered underground...
Cheers yeah it took a while to sort it out ! I have a big hard drawn map of it all now. Taken a few years to put it all together!

I've never been underground myself but would love to have a look at a novice/easier type exploration one day before I shuffle off lol 60 now so time is passing by, still keep myself reasonably fit by walking and cycling the Great Flat lode trail, maybe I should stick to that.

Cheers Mark. Have a wonder up to Tywarnhale, easy enough to find. I have done a vid on it. Adit is half way up the slope toward engine house . A nice one for beginners no ropes etc needed. But it does start off a little pokey. There’s a few other easy ones I can point you in the direction of if you want them 🙂

Yeah it’s in a small fenced compound right next to the drive down to a few houses, so you would probably need permission to use it as there’s not much cover 🤣

great vid guys. when you reach some of these huge stupes, are some natural underground fissures or were they full of copper, or tin or lead? The wealthy syndicates who made these speculative ventures were real gamblers. You would never know if you would or would not find copper or tin in commercially viable seams. A big gamble one I'd not like to venture into even with today's technology.
Cheers Alan, this mine in particular the workings we work through you can often see how they intersected older workings as they went, so it’s possible that they went down the old working to prospect for areas they either missed or were lower grade that the older miners left behind. The modern workings were much bigger and wider and you can easily spot the much older narrow workings.

Cheers. I have probably done this trip 30 times or more so all off memory.
We did it gradually in stages as it’s easy to get lost but we learnt best by actually getting lost then having to figure out where we went wrong.
The trickiest part is that you can easily go down a parallel part of the end of the mine which looks similar but has no shafts which go up to the surface which causes a lot of confusion and then some people believe it is not possible to exit at that far end.
Great video Ben. Shows how dangerous Old Wheal Jane was to work in with all that fractured ground. Where there many accidents there when it was still working ? - can't say I have ever read anything much about any major collapses. I don't think that they ever drove from the new workings into the old ones presumably as Old Wheal Jane was relatively shallow compared to the new workings and had presumably been worked out.
I’m sure there would have been a lot of accidents, probably so many they were considered common ! Modern Jane went underneath the lot much deeper so is now all underwater. ☹️
@@BenoCam Sadly yes 😞 Yes the new Wheal Jane followed the old lodes down much deeper. Very interesting to see your traverse through the old workings. It must have taken a lot of wrong turnings and backtracking to find that route.
Nice through trip, how long a rope needed for the ascent?
The way back out is unusual as only the first 15m or so is vertical then there is a long muddy slippery slope about another 20m down . You can almost climb that slope without a rope but it’s hard going !
Can you access any of the modern Wheal Jane workings from where you were?
Sadly not. It’s all deep underwater now.

Thanks. We try and avoid the bats whenever we can. I have never seen them down in that part before so that was very unexpected. We will avoid that area in future now we now they are there.
