On this day in 1965 {September 16th} "The Dean Martin Show" debut on the NBC-TV network... The show lasted nine seasons, with a grand total of 264 episodes... The show's theme song, "Everybody Loves Somebody", had entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart fifteen months earlier on June 21st, 1964 at position #72; and on August 9th, 1964 it peaked at #1 {for 1 week} and spent 15 weeks on the Top 100... And on July 26th, 1964 it also reached #1 {for 8 weeks} on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Track chart... As stated above it knocked the Beatles out of the top spot, and the song that replaced it at #1 was the Supremes' first of twelve #1 records, "Where Did Our Love Go"... The day the 'Martin' show debut, his "Houston" was at #21, for its 2nd week, on the Top 100 {that would also be its peak position on the chart}... Mr. Martin, born Dino Paul Crocetti, passed away on Christmas Day of 1995 at the age of 78... May he R.I.P.
Thanks Deano, being playing this song since I was 6 now I'm nearly 66. Love it and delicate it to my Best Friend Paul whom passed away in June 2021...we sang this so many times together................Never always sober either.
Music is everywhere around us, we just have to listen, it came in those ages not now in the century call 21st! even though i've never was in that time called ''70's and 60's'' , in some way every time i listen to those songs of people like Dean Martin, Donald O'Connor Gene Kelly Nancy Sinatra ELVIS PRESLEY, Frank Sinatra Debbie Reynolds Fred Astaire Louis Armstrong Mickey Rooney Judy Garland Eddie Fisher Ella Fitzgerald and so on, i feel like i was there when these people were, there's something amazing about them and their songs.. its just incredible! my friends think i'm a weird in some kind of way that i listen to very old songs and stuffs but i don't know if songs have ages to listen, so its not the matter of ages its the matter of who we choose to be, so why not let us be our self with the beautiful music that we enjoy without seeing the time, when we can just mesmerize in it
I hate that everyone assumes he's always drunk, Dean was a notorious "pro" who was much more disciplined that he let on. Yes he didn't rehearse but he memorized all the dialogue and even the blocking, studying it for a week before shooting. This is recounted in many books and interviews. If you look at any of his songs or skits, he ALWAYS cracks up, it's just him. Just check out Conan O'Brien next time, all his little ticks, hops, fey skipping, it all started with this man.
+cindy westlake It's nice to know I'm not alone in that way of thinking, thanks for that! Judging by what he's wearing, Dean was probably shooting " Rough Night In Jericho". So the odds on him being drunk are low to zero. Dean was a notorious "pro" when working. There are a gazillion books that confirm this. He took his work extremely serious, and his work ethic on "Rio Bravo" not only impressed Howard Hawks but Duke Wayne as well. In my mind he was robbed of at least an Oscar nomination, he was that good.
+Tommy Petersen Yeah, but he was no Foster Brooks. (JK ... I never got the I'm-a-drunk humor.) I know little about Dino's history, but it stands to reason, with all he accomplished, that he either was play-acting the inebriation or else he was a HIGHLY functional alcoholic.
+srbaruchi As his son Ricci, explained, in his book (written in 2002), that, when his dad and Jerry Lewis' comedy duo broke up, he needed a new 'persona' going into his single career, and he saw a couple of comedy acts elsewhere, saw that it got a lot of laughs, and settled on that! In fact, Dean was a reasonably moderate drinker - Sinatra, once, when asked about it, replied that, ..."I SPILL more than he drinks...!!!" And Ricci said, in his book, "....that I never saw him drunk in my l life..." It was, indeed, an 'act' , as you suggest, but, grew to be just all part of the craziness and mayhem that WAS the show!!!
