That point in the Arroyo was named the Devil's Gate long before the damn was built. So why is it that everyone assumes that a control slough, built into the damn, IS the Devil's Gate? It's the natural choke point of the Arroyo right there at the profile rock that is the "gate". And you ignored- or perhaps just didn't get around to it in your ten minute Google search, the real reason that people think that area is charged with dark energy. It's also the reason it's tied to the Colorado Street Bridge suicides. Parson's and Co. did more than test rockets just north of that site in the Arroyo (next to where JPL stands today).

Years back, I think it was 1991 while working on a TV Show, we were shooting at the Devil's Gate Dam. Myself and other crew persons got to go inside the machinery house on top of the dam. Inside this room we viewed the hydraulic cylinders and controls that would lift up the gates that you visited. Thank you for the visit.

Nice Vid. When I explored it, that gate wasn't over the access tunnel. BTW, that's not the actual Devil's Gate. The Devil's Gate is reference of the narrow gap in the canyon where the Devil's Profile is. This was before the flood control dam was build.
