  • Episode 163 of Mike Finnegan's show, Finnegan's Garage, is for ladies and every gentleman who enjoys a good time. We decided to mod a 1976 Rogers Bonneville TR jet boat solely to make it shoot the biggest stream of water ever from its jet drive. The problem was that a huge thunderstorm swept across our lake during our adventure. With limited time to test our our new mods, we braved the elements anyway so that we could bring you this video! The mods made our boat slower but looks cooler when we shoot a massive rooster tail of water and we and can always undo our mod if we decide to go racing again. Check it out.

      Suction by ass, it's atmospheric pressure that moves the water into the pump!

    • @johnlloyd2390
      @johnlloyd2390 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rondye9398:
      Not really, unless you're assuming the atmospheric pressure on the whole lake is what's pushing water into the jet pump.
      What that system really is, is a ducted, shrouded propeller whose water stream is enclosed, rather than simply exposed to the water in the lake.
      The forward moving force is the result of Newton's Third Law of Motion as applied to water. Specifically, if you take in a lot of the stuff in a short amount of time and pump it out at high velocity, you get a jet force.
      Finnegan's contention is that because the jet pump (an impeller or ducted propeller, if you wish) is drawing water in, then it is that "suction" that is "sucking" the boat through the water. But that's like saying a jet engine "sucks" itself through the air.
      That may work for a "ducted fan" -- which is the "bypass" stage of large jet engines -- or a multi-blade propeller inside a shroud, but ultimately what moves a jet-driven vehicle of any sort is the reaction of throwing a large volume of fluid out the back.

    Go Big D! While you're explaining the jet drive I'm thinking about Nitromethane Top Fuel boats. You can see the driveline torque load. I can see the boat shift with every little change in water flow. As if the water resistance has no effect. The boat shifts back and forth until the driveline load balances out. You see the same thing in 700hp Yamaha drag sleds. I still don't comprehend the belt takes the torque in those.
    Anyway back to insane real Hemi jet boat action. We only got 76 out of modded twin BBC Donzi so that thing is flying.

  • @robertbuick1500
    @robertbuick1500 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    What’s with this BS that “the jet boat is pulling itself through the water”. There is a suction force present and necessary for the jet drive to function, but the resulting negative pressure present at the inlet is distributed equally in all directions. Water is pulled from the front, sides, rear and bottom. Any directional motion resulting from the water rush in to equalize the pressure at the inlet is the result of flow resistance. There is some miniscule directional bias naturally inherent to the system which results in some forward bias, but saying the boat is being pulled through the waters is akin to saying that because a drag strip has a slightly negative grade that gravity is pulling the dragster forward, while technically true, in the context of how the dragster is propelled forward, the contribution of gravity is infinitesimal and a valueless statement.

    • @strangersound
      @strangersound 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      After a quick read on waterjets, I would say the system is pushing, due to the waterjet creating "thrust". But, I think the question of push or pull has more to do with the placement on the vehicle. If the engine and waterjet were mounted on an extended arm in front of the boat, it could be described as pulling. But mounted anywhere on the boat itself is still pushing. Or is it if the waterjet were on the front of the boat? If I tow your car with a rope, that's pulling. If I pull up behind you and push, that's obviously pushing.
      I think Mike is just trash talking for humor value, but it's a fun thought experiment. Is a front wheel drive automobile pushing or pulling the car forward? Would forward being pulling and reverse be pushing?
      In a front engine car with rear wheel drive, everything in the drivetrain is pushing, all the way to the axle/s...if it's a manual transmission. But what about an automatic? A torque converter could arguably be pulling. When the engine side spins up, the other side follows, spinning the drive shaft, etc. Once it's spun up, I think it probably reaches an equilibrium of push/pull, since it starts to behave as one unit. But on spin up, the back half of the torque converter is definitely following, which implies it's being dragged along, which is obviously more pulling than pushing.
      If you take a high pressure water hose and drop it, it will turn into a wild snake and start spraying water all over the place. Is the water pressure pushing the hose around, or is the hose being pulled up the water column? Or is it both? (Newton's 3rd law)

    Do a video explaining water flow, routing, sizes of line, pressure and why. Advantage of co2 divertor over cable and why? When you should have co2 or cable for us idiots with jet boats. Do different hulls require different angles etc.

    Imparting work to the water is what moves the boat.
    You accelerate the water backwards, all physical reactions being equally and opposite, you therefore accelerate the boat forward.

  • @juscozcustoms
    @juscozcustoms 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    If the suction moves the boat forward more than the nozzle then how does the T nozzle on game over keep the boat stationary while you build boost?

    Hydraulic steering would make a huge difference in handle ability. I'd definitely do that and put longer tilt piston on it so you could use it in race mode and Roost mode simply by adding a bump stop on top for race.

    If you carry your reaction mass with you, aka a rocket. You have thrust without suction. On a jet boat though, you’re correct.

    wow weird how when the water shoots up the boat just about flips, idk how the suction isnt holding it in the water

  • @michaelwilliams8297
    @michaelwilliams8297 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Without a solid propellant like a rocket motor, you have to create a pressure differential to have thrust. So yes Mike, she must suck to move forward.
