I always thought this song was so stupid, but find myself fascinated with this version and have come back for many listens. Morgan's singing, mannerisms, acting, and appearance are perfect for this role and the backup singers are equally great, especially the guy with the tambourine.
You can still say "the black guy" if you want, it's just that many people feel more comfortable using other descriptors. Being a person of colour, I don't mind people describing me with my ethnicity as long as they don't use racial slurs.
It's essentially from the original video that this is playing with. Pretty much all of the musicians in this are as plastic and wooden as possible while still being able to perform. I've just recently become aware of PMJB, but they're awesome, and a coverband that deserves a following independent of the songs they're covering. Personally, I prefer the ones where they're doing it in a '20s era style though.
What separates PMJ from everyone else is the acting that the lead singers do. Their facial expressions as they sing and their other movements are testimony to first rate directing. It looks like A LOT of preparation goes into these performances.
A good example, why videos are so great to watch. Every time I watch it, I see new body movements on all the singers and musicians, that I missed previously. They match the music. So you watch the video again and again, so happy that it is not removed when watched once. It is so entertaining, you know a lot of thought went into to making the video, not just great tunes. Not sure if PMJ started this, but I also enjoy Robyn Adele Anderson and others as well.
@@russorpcom I agree 100% Richard! The costumes and "attitude" we see in All About The Bass shows this (to me) to a great degree. These videos tend to be captivating---great casting of everyone in them!
I have watched this video several times now. What blows me away is not only the musicality of singers and the band, but their facial expressions and body movements. Morgan James's is "fantastic" and moves like "plastic". I love the way she moves with the facial expressions as if she was a real life size doll. Watching the video is so much better because of her. Well Done for sure!
I doubt the performers think the song is bad, covers are usually chosen as the performers admire the original song - even it is very intentionally cheesy
I love the theremin gag at 2-10. Brian Wilson was a user of it. Also her voice through it was amazing, she hits all those variety of high notes, then she immediately drops the high stuff, straight back to the lower register parts of the proper lyrics. Brilliant.
F***k you´re right - she doesn´t breathe. Watching the backers you can actually see them breathe. After a break, before singing a note, they open their mouths like half a second earlyer to take a breath. Morgan just opens her mouth and starts singing. Even after her "siren" solo, no hesitation, just keeps on singing. Her technique is just that good.
Morgan is, of course, stunning in voice and appearance. But Tim "Tambourine Guy" Kobart displays the joy we have in our hearts, even when we forget it's there. Thank you Scott for bringing this to us.
OK, but how is no one talking about how they carried her out at the end? That was hilarious and she just kept smiling without laughing. That's dedication right there. 3:11
Hahahahahaha Tamborine guy is awesome. Love this videos. Morgan James is great in it and she does look like Barbie. Everyone is always great in your videos
I love how I never realised this song is basically just about a girl saying "Babe, If you tell me you'll love me forever, we can have sex whenever you want wherever you want. I'm basically a toy, use me whenever, just call me your favourite :)" until I heard the vintage version.
Those back-up singers are tight. I appreciate the effort to actually sound like the Beach Boys' vocal tone. That and the theremin really sold this video for me.

What's crazy is that I didn't read the full title and yet when the video started I said to myself, "wow, they sound like the Beach Boys." Very nicely done!
The comment section is a really appreciative. And rightfully so. For most of us, if we did this one thing, up to this point, we would die happy. How much joy must this bring to these performers? I can't imagine.
+ElSabio159 It's not, though. And you can describe a noun, "socks" and "sandals" for example, with adjectives; that is obviously what "WHAT" was about. Don't be silly.
I was about to change videos towards the end and thank god I didn’t because OH MY GOD WHEN THEY CARRIED HER OUT I DIED! IT WAS SUCH A SMOOTH TRANSITION WTF
+CinnamonWafflez I don't think they understand how good it is; remember, Aqua's version is supposed to be bimbo-personified. Her voice is "that good" that she cannot stoop that low; it's part of all the PMJ stuff. All about the base the original is cutesy but also deliberately no a clear voice, part of Meghan Trainor's schtick, no problem. But their version is to really "belt out" the song and Moran James really delivers. This is a pure New York sound, and that touch of NY, NY with the clarinet and trumpet guy is just perfect. The whole point is this ensemble has an exceptional range of styles, usually far better as artists than the originals who became popular not for talent, but more for opportunistic reasons with usually not much more talent than a catchy tune. What do you expect from teeny-boppers of any age? Try asking musicians; this girl has an exceptional voice and range. [And she ain't bad on the eyes, either.]
clasystems considering I'm a musician myself (if you wanna count 3 years of violin being a musician) I kinda now understand, it's true, I mean. Not everyone is gonna sound EXACTLY like how they want it to. I do agree, she has a great voice and range, but she's not going to meet the expectations of EVERYONE. There may be opinions but there are also facts.
Just listened to this again after a couple years. Still think it’s great. Love the chap on the right of the three. He has the mechanical moves down to a tee
I can't put my finger on it, why I like this version more. Also, when the three Ken's carried Barbie off stage at the end, I had to double check which site I was on.
Big fan of the talent of Morgan, she absolutely killed it in this video, so much so that after many times seeing this video I just noticed the black guy never once blinks while facing the camera.
I bet I've watched this video 30 times in the past few weeks. It puts a smile on my face every time. Gotta love MJ, the voice, the mannerisms--she is simply fantastic in this one.
Frankly, this is the best Ms. James has ever looked to me. On a 1 to 10 scale, I give Morgan James a 12. In addition to the high score, I truly believe this is her best video, and every one of her videos are great. Way to go M.J. I can see you worked plenty hard to make this the awesome video it is. Kudos everyone involved.
1) this is the first time I’ve actually ever stopped and listened to the lyrics of this song. I’ve only just realised how completely fucked up this song is, when you consider those lyrics are about a kids’ toy. Also, she’s got a great voice.
The lead singer of Aqua admitted she never played with Barbies but it's not really about the doll specifically so much as it is the idea of being a toy for someone else to use. I was 12 when it was popular and people lost their minds over it 😂
Well the og song is supposed to be about that..fucked up, not actually for kids. Its the bubbly part and the use of "Barbie" that makes it appealing, such in the way Katy Perrys "Youre so gay" song, in which she used barbies for the music video, thus appealing to young kids.
I love the guitarr player. He looks like an accountant who came into the office one day, said "fuck this" and moved to Hawaii to join a band.

My God she has incredible vocal control ... it's amazing ...
This version catches the original intentions behind the lyrics SO well !
Morgan James is the real deal. What a voice and vocal range.
Where the hell does Morgan's voice come from. Amazing. She's such a gorgeous, little tiny thing, with the pipes of a gospel singer. Brilliant!
She is really a gorgeous doll and sings like a goddess!
She's my fav PMJ singer!
This version is a bop, and I didn't expect to like it as much as I did.
Morgan's range blows my mind. As a classical singer, I can sing that high but not that clear. I struggle xD hahaha for her its effortless
the socks and sandals on the black guy and I'm over here like "WHAT ARE THOSE?!?!?!?!?!?"
Omfg 😂
+Francesca Margarita But...you just said it. They're sandals...
+Francesca Margarita No, you're not, because you just declared exactly what they are.
+Francesca Margarita That's racist.
+ElSabio159 It's not, though.
And you can describe a noun, "socks" and "sandals" for example,
with adjectives; that is obviously what "WHAT" was about. Don't be silly.
Had to come back and revisit this video with the Barbenheimer going on July 21... Still hilarious and love it!!
Thought I was the only one!
Wow, Morgan James really displays her operatic training. She belts it out like a three hundred pounder. And looks cute in the outfit.
Morgan James would look "cute" in a burlap sack.
And the 'theramin' section? Insanity!
Three hundred and 50 pounder
I love enthusiastic tambourine man!
I was about to change videos towards the end and thank god I didn’t because OH MY GOD WHEN THEY CARRIED HER OUT I DIED! IT WAS SUCH A SMOOTH TRANSITION WTF
the choreography alone is magnificent. The performance? Brilliant.
This woman is a gem.
they all look like dollies, I love it. especially guy in floral!
Morgan James has a fantastic voice :)
why does everyone hate Morgans singing? I think it's great
+CinnamonWafflez I don't think they understand how good it is; remember, Aqua's version is supposed to be bimbo-personified.
+CinnamonWafflez Sure. And the ones that disagree have to clue about the collective talent of PMJ [pearls before swine).
clasystems very true
Someone doesn't like her singing??? That's impossible!
Just listened to this again after a couple years. Still think it’s great. Love the chap on the right of the three. He has the mechanical moves down to a tee
I can't put my finger on it, why I like this version more. Also, when the three Ken's carried Barbie off stage at the end, I had to double check which site I was on.
I love how Tambourine Guy walks on and is like "OMG! IS IT MY BIRTHDAY!?"
This was disturbingly enjoyable to watch
¡Es impresionante la VOZ de Morgan! No soy músico ni cantante, pero es imposible no rendirse ante esta voz, BELLÍSIMA.
love the backup singers ^^
LOL......Absolutely Brilliant.......Have to watch it every morning with my coffee. .
+9jep That's a great way to start the day!
that's wierd
Each one of these singers has a different kind of pain in their eyes.
Has to be the mismatched socks, the clocks and these pink shorts. And not even once you've seen the drummer.
Very underrated comment
@@Cernumospete We drummers are always getting overlooked. #frownyface 😜
Maybe they were barbie toys too
Big fan of the talent of Morgan, she absolutely killed it in this video, so much so that after many times seeing this video I just noticed the black guy never once blinks while facing the camera.
I bet I've watched this video 30 times in the past few weeks. It puts a smile on my face every time. Gotta love MJ, the voice, the mannerisms--she is simply fantastic in this one.
tambourine guy strikes again! xD
Does anyone else think that Morgan was incredibly adorable in this video?
Morgan IS Adorable!!!
I love that one guy in the background who was like "wait what's going on" when the three guys grabbed the girl and lifted her away 😂
And she never breaks character right thru the end of the video - what a pro!
Morgan's voice is amazing!
I used to think this song was genuinely about being a barbie doll...
Innocent
@Destiny tran It's about what?
@@Awelbeckk a girl offering herself to be a guy "doll" and do whatever he wants with her "if you say i'm only yours"
Wait it's not about dolls?
@@corrynhockney8059 As long as it is a talking doll...
TAMBOURINE GUY FOR PRESIDENT 2016
Why did you Americans not enact this instead?! Tambourine Guy would've been a very good idea
He just seems so excited to be there. You swing that tambourine, friend
Can't vote for him, socks dont match...just sayin..
No. No more Obama’s.
Mike White Racist.
Doesn't hurt that Morgan looks like a Barbie Girl. My favorite part is when she looks at the camera and says, "Ah, Ah, Ah"
1) this is the first time I’ve actually ever stopped and listened to the lyrics of this song. I’ve only just realised how completely fucked up this song is, when you consider those lyrics are about a kids’ toy.
Also, she’s got a great voice.
Or are they?
The lead singer of Aqua admitted she never played with Barbies but it's not really about the doll specifically so much as it is the idea of being a toy for someone else to use.
I was 12 when it was popular and people lost their minds over it 😂
Yup
What the hell did you think it was about?
Well the og song is supposed to be about that..fucked up, not actually for kids. Its the bubbly part and the use of "Barbie" that makes it appealing, such in the way Katy Perrys "Youre so gay" song, in which she used barbies for the music video, thus appealing to young kids.
