You can't discredit his skills. He's not a brawler, but a tactician, and not a lot of Filipino boxers are like that.

At 7:19, Nonito throws a right cross and he is about to follow up with a left uppercut. He stops, literally looks at his fucking opponent and stops and decides to change distance because Vargas is too close then throw the left uppercut. It might not seem that impressive, but holy shit does it indicate how much this guy is thinking in a fight. I came here after watching his impressive fight against Inoue, and it all makes sense.
