In my experience in North America, about half of the bus stops are before the intersection so that time spent waiting for the light to change colors is combined with time passengers spend getting on and off.

I’ve sat for 10 minutes waiting for an opening and finally having to just cross my fingers they see me and slow down enough there isn’t an accident :/. Round about are also really fun for the younger kids :) “the turn!!!! hang on everybody!!!” (15mph in a big school bus can be pretty fun lol)
Bus route demand, just like traffic density, depends on the time of day. So at peak times (morning/afternoon/evening rush) more people will be riding the buses. But late night, early AM and mid day ridership will be much less. Easy to kinda forget that when we all have day/night cycle turned off lol
I really had to restrain my self to not count the appearances of Count von Count. But I think I can count on it that somebody DID count the appearances of Count von Count.
The city of Ottawa, Ontario (which has a similar climate to Superior) has recently begun the process of replacing its bus fleet with electric buses after a pilot project found that electric buses met all requirements, even in winter months. The city has committed to purchasing no more diesel buses, and the entire fleet will be electric by 2036. If a city with a climate like Ottawa can do it, I think they're a good option for Magnolia County.
As a German, I always find it fascinating how Americans go about designing bus routes. In my city of Munich alone, with its 1.5 million people, we have 79 day bus routes and 18 night bus routes serving a total of 1074 bus stops with a fleet of 569 busses. Add to that 174 tram stations, 13 tram lines and 132 trams and I think it's way beyond anything in the US... not saying that the US system is worse or the German system is better - just noticing the whopping differences.
Don’t worry as a Canadian I’ll be the first to say here in Canada and I know America as-well that our public transit is a horrible joke with near no funding. Either it be trains, buses or ferry’s we are significantly lacking in everything, I do understand the size difference in land and limitations such as mountains but it shouldn’t be an excuse for the country let alone a single province/state it’s disgraceful.
Magic oooooooh just magic not just the building of busroutes even speed taking. But just a magic episode. So glad that you on CS2 and seems to like it.
Thank you! And I do! There are issues - some of them very large - but CS2 does get a lot right. I think that transit is one of those things, even if the routing is a bit wonky. I'm guessing that'll get fixed over time, but I'm glad that we have waypoints to control things until then.
Big fan of the bus tour at the end! Reminded me of the old style of city tour, which I love ❤️ I really like getting to see the city from a ground-level perspective, I think it really helps to bring the city to life and show just how impressive the city actually is
While the info panel for each bus stop only shows the total amount of passengers waiting at the stop, you can check how many passengers are waiting for a specific line by selecting the line and hovering over said stop on the left hand live action route overview (where it shows how many on each bus).
75% utilization would be unthinkable here in The Netherlands. I'm used to bus routes having perhaps on average 1/3rd of the seating capacity filled. I don't know how seating+standing capacity is determined so that's why I'm going by seating capacity, meaning in rush hour there would be >100% lol
@@MusicalInquisitIt‘s actually the same in Switzerland (1/3) and we have really low bike usage. Of course during rush hour we have full busses, trams, and trains but not throughout the day.
@@MusicalInquisit ridership isn't low, it's just that overcapacity is more or less mandated (as well as a high and consistent frequency). this goes for buses, trams, metros and trains. It's perhaps why (according to Not Just Bikes) public transport is most expensive in The Netherlands (and Switzerland, but in Switzerland the landscape also helps explain it)
That's because he applied a purely economic model, adjusting the offer to the demand to "maximize efficiency". In Europe, the practice is the opposite, planners will first set an ideal schedule based on waiting times, consider how many vehicles would be needed to reach it and then get as close as possible to the ideal with the resources available. The objective is more social than economic (with the service often subsidized). Of course, that is much more expensive and less efficient, but the externalities are usually worth it.
13:33 Ah, Benjamin song, that song is always soothing my soul. Thanks for revamp public transport. That one is always drive me nuts in CS1. You've done a wonderful job here!
Enjoyed watching this rework. I’d have done things a little differently but that’s part of the reason I watch, you explain your rationale behind the choices you make and change things when they don’t work out.
You really need to be careful about the exact time you're looking at bus ridership. It varies throughout the day. So when you initially adjust a bus route at 8 AM it might need 10 busses, but when you go in to readjust at 2 PM or 3 AM its only going to need 6. Obviously those 10 buses are sorely needed on the line even though they don't see full ridership throughout the day. I also think you should disable nighttime service, because it's not that realistic. Especially in the American midwest I wouldn't expect nighttime busses (also the ridership is low at night anyways).
Love to see Magnolia County again! It is great to see you enjoy and play other games too! Just missed this city and am glad we got an hour of bus action!
I feel like Chuckles running, if he won would want the taxi stands at all the bus stops for money reasons obviously. Good story element maybe. Loved it! Can't wait to see what comes next
I would suggest adding electric buses for those routes that go through residential areas (especially single family housing). I'm guessing Chuckles could pay for taxi stands to be added, but I'm guessing he'd some spatial analysis to show the hotspots of where his taxis are picking up the most. I'm guessing he'd also add standalone taxi stands in other areas of the city.
Phil, at 16:10 you can see buses piling up blocking traffic. In some cases, the bus bay is entered on the bus stop but in many cases, especially where one stop serves several routes, the bus stop is actually at the front edge of the bay so that multiple vehicles can queue at the stop without impairing traffic. Also, the Bailey bus route absolutely should have an intermediate stop by the chemical plant. It goes right past it. Even if it's just a small thing on the edge of the highway with a pedestrian crossing to get to the plant. A necessary commuting service for both Bailey residents and anyone commuting from Bend.
The utilisation changes according to the time of day in the game. So at 8 am it's going to be different compared to 2 pm. You keep adjusting at random times.
For all who want to know how to easily make small Bus Stops. Sandwich the bus stop between two alleys and then either change the road addons (grass, trees or else) under the bus stop or the two left and right of the bus stop to something different than the bus stop. Because when the road has the same addon, the game randomly removes nodes and combines the road into single roads. When the road has different addons the game won't remove the nodes. But if you accidentally change the addon into the same or remove it it will combine the nodes.
You're certainly not kidding about bus drivers not liking roundabouts. When I was in Sydney last month (specifically Parramatta, but that's just detail), the bus my team and I took to the main square always went barging straight through the roundabouts. Thankfully, they were flat circles inside the roundabouts, so it wasn't _too_ bad.
to be fair, thats why flat roundabouts, or roundabouts with wide skirts, are along bus routes / industry areas. Busses on the central coast have plenty of routes that have them go straight over flatabouts
From what I have observed in other urban planning and design TH-cam channels, they do provide _flat_ roundabouts so that trucks and buses can go over them like in a small intersection. It's a fun way to observe real-life considerations when thinking about city and street planning in an urban environment.
I don't have much input or anything of not really, however! Super stoked to take a Bus Ride. It's been a while. Even if we stay on transitional City Tours, it's super rad to see the Bus Ride come back
The forests surrounding your great region should be a lot denser. You're removing a lot of trees from industrial zones, I think that the citizens wouldn't let that happen if you don't replace them somewhere else. It also looks more realistic. Thanks for another great video, keep up the good work 💪🏻

I think the road near the university bus station should allow cars. I think there would be some people who would drive to the bus station from their rural homes/farms that would require car parking and easy access to the station.
But if you allow that connection, then you allow that connection. There's no way to filter, and I'd imagine he wouldn't want freight traffic driving through there.
The Count popping up with the block counting is so , so funny. Actually, all of your edits are very funny, especially the self-deprecating ones. Love this channel.
Love the episode, Phil! I do have to say, as someone with mild colorblindness, I would hate having to navigate the bus lines in Bend with 3 of them appearing as very similar shades of blue/purple. Swapping the Purple line with yellow/gold line would really help differentiate them and also help differentiate the yellow from the light green line.
I think that adding trams would be better than electric busses - ideally they would be trolleybuses but the game doesn't have those yet - as they get their power from the overhead wires instead of the batteries that contain rare earth minerals.
In a perfect world, yes. In the US? There’s only one city with a population of less than 230,000 people with a modern streetcar system, and that city has a population of just over 150,000.
Niceeee, great to see the improvement on the city, but i think, that traffic it's an issue that needs to be solved, also i would like to see something made in Paradise Bay, a landmark (apart from the beach and the train station of course) maybe a pier or something? I don't know, i just think the city is ready to grow even more, love your content Phil!
Hell yeah!!! I love public transit!!! I want public transit everywhere i cant wait for the whole town to have a metro system and trains and trams and buses and public transit for everyone and less cars!!!!!!!!
Love this series. I would like to see some density upgrades in Bend and and a development into something big. Slowly but steadily ramping up habitants.
i think you should put the stops closer to homes (more people, less time walking, less streets need to be crossed, no traffic being interrupted by huge waves of pedestrians) like putting a single line that goes to the neighbourhood, then another line (with more frequency so people dont have to wait at the station too long) that goes to commercial zones, it would probably maximize ridership and have minimal risk of accidents
Actually in my area we have bus stops 2-3 blocks even infront of houses if they are on arterial roads. It’s super helpful for mobility, I can pin point where I get on off
i love this episode! and i say yes to adding electric buses and taxi stands! i think it would also be nice to do some targeted TOD along the most frequent and utilized bus lines as well to get even more people on the system!
I'd love to see trams added to Paradise Bay in the future. Im not sure why but something about it being a beach town makes me think trams would fit so well there
24:15 Hi Phil! You could add a path from the townhomes to the stops on the left, this way they could choose the "downstream" stop to increase their chances of catching the bus when in a hurry c:
Maybe you could make most routes operational in daytime only, and add a few slower more winding night bus routes. In my hometown the night busses are less frequent and attempt to drive through most residental areas instead of optimizing for speed and capacity. This series is so good!!! 😊
hey Phil, had thought about a good story reasoning for you to switch to the electric buses and to incorporate taxi stands into the system. the newly elected governor would want to keep some of the promises that helped put her in power to placate the citizens to act as a bit of political theatre. the "Look, I did this thing for you. Remember that for the future." mindset. the electric buses are a clean mode of public transit, and would be a popular starting point, with the potential for future policies to restrict or heavily tax excessive use of private vehicles. that would ensure more and more transit would be needed. this should also give governor timmons an easy way to buy off chuckles. offering him a decrease in taxes to his cabs, with the stipulation being he will need to upgrade his growing fleet to electric vehicles. this further shows the governor is wanting to push for cleaner energy and greener cities, while at the same time providing jobs, improving the infrastructure, and improving neighborhoods across the area. governor timmons could easily say she would like to upgrade and improve this plan over ten years or so, in phases, so the populace can adjust easier. this also helps chuckles potentially buy his way in to a seat with the board of transit for the area, as he would become a large player partner with the bus lines. opening his venture out for prospects of expansion like the bus system.
So glad to have another video finally. I know how much work you put into these though, and I do not mind the wait. Just super excited! Wish I could watch it all right now, I will be back to finish it. Commenting for some engagement because I love this series so much!
I think that any electric bus system should probably be trolleybus. The numbers show that in real life, they make much more sense than battery electric in the majority of cases.
doesn't Chuckles have a zoo to run? it's time for him to pack it in and go home. also, any thoughts on keeping busses flowing through the bus stations? I always wind up with the entrance and exit getting clogged with pedestrians using the stations, preventing the busses from getting in and out, creating a huge backup of busses, killing traffic nearby. edit to add: what is the rationale for using only the cheaper stops instead of the nicer bus stands that buff comfort? I thought the comfort score makes a mode of transit more appealing...
So far as I can tell, there isn't a great way to prevent that at the current time. I really hope there are more pedestrian access points added to assets in the future (like the old parks in CS1), where we can draw peds to different locations. That said, the university station works mostly because the pedestrian road draws people towards in, and since it is closest to the exit, I think the cims are crossing there (or that's my hypothesis anyway). Regarding the shelters - I mostly forgot to add them as the end, like I had intended to. I hate adding them up front and dislike the way the mechanic works generally. Too much inside baseball here, but I literally wrote the manual for when to put certain bus stop amenities at bus stops in my area. Shelters, trash cans, benches - you always add them after, because they are very expensive to install and maintain. They literally mean someone has to go out there everyday to make sure they are in good repair and clean. So you usually only place them where there is high utilization, not the other way around. So in this case, I can answer whether the chicken or the egg came first, and CS2 has it wrong. I'll update the shelters in the next one and have this discussion. Thanks for the reminder!
@@CityPlannerPlays I feel like stating the obvious, but in order to decide the number of vehicles per route, you can simply read the "Line Usage". For example, 50% means your busses are half full. In that case you can more or less half the number of vehicles. You want the routes to be as close to 100% as possible. I could be wrong though :D
I wasn't expecting there to be a section in this video about despair over unsatisfying intersections set to intense phonk music.. but y'know what, I'm here for it.
Something like the big initiative to revamp transport in the county seems like a "now or never" for making the bus fleet electric. Id say YES to electric busses!
Great work, reasonable and well explained. I guess i'll rework my transportation using the same approach. One minor improvement Idea that came to my mind: I guess having pedestrian bridges instead of pedestrian crossings around the two busy stations might improve the traffic flow around these a bit more, for both pedestrians and vehicles.
been watching for years now and something Ive always wanted to see added to your cities is an Amish community or small farm towns. The midwest and specifically southern michigan is littered with these and think it would be really cool to see
Love the Episode. It has some great tips for when my work settles down. All that said, did you consider heavy rail (Subway type trains), Light rail (trolleys), or even (Hold on to your hat) monorail? It strikes me a loop or three around the area, with a spoke to the largest employers and the University might be more effective. At each community have the main bus terminal at the rail station and use small, more fuel mini and micro busses. As a new community springs up, start from a stop on the train line and build out from there. This would give Chuckles a chance to upgrade his taxi service to a small bus provider and contract out with the growing communities.
It would be interesting to see if a bus depot + integrated cab station at the edge of the map where the outside connection is, would prevent the cabs from entering the city. Would the cab drop passengers off at the bus depot, and then turn around and leave?
It actually makes sense that it caused in increase in cab usage as well. The city I live in for example you can easily see a number of them waiting at bus stations during certain times of day.
I think adding taxi terminals to each bus stop would be a way of appeasing Chuckles, a little back scratching to keep him happy enough to not be a major throne in the side the next time there is a big development he does not agree with. BTW, congrats on being Knighted...Sir Planner. :)
The build is looking great! Phil, I wonder if you could mention the neighborhoods by name and describe what they’re like a bit more to help with the sense of place and local identity. With CS2 having so few assets and no DLC currently, I’m only struggling with imagining the sense of place. Future updates will eventually get CS2 up to speed. Great work and thank you for the content!
I can imagine Chuckles would be even more ticked off if trams ever made it to MC. The network rationalisation worked out really well. Great design choices made all round
I think an integrated electric and gas/diesel bus system makes the most sense, a forward facing but realistically not wealthy area wouldn’t be able to afford an all electric bus system but maybe would try to put in place the systems to make it possible in the future. Another thing you could do to make it a bit more realistic would be to name name the bus routes like they do in real life. Where I live (in east europe) an number and then the extreme ends of the line and an major intermediate stop. For example, in MC, line 3: Uptown BS to Bend Train Stain via Downtown Bend. Seems like an effective way to provide all the relevant info to commuters
39:43 In the game you can hover your cursor over the white circle that visualises the stop in the lines schematic and it will show you how many passangers are waiting there for the line you have selected. Comparing this number to the number of people waiting at the stop in total will give you the answer your looking for.
Nice to see the bus stops positioned relative to intersections so that departing passengers can't cross in front of a bus that ought to be zipping off to its next destination
From a logistics perspective, I think synergizing the taxis with the buses makes some sense. It might even increase bus utilization if it means folks who want to use the bus are a little outside their comfortable walking distance, they can take a cab to the nearest bus hub or stop, as taking a taxi to the nearest stop and taking the busses the rest of the way may be cheaper than taking a taxi the whole way. From a narrative standpoint, it may placate Chuckles if the close connection carries implications that it might increase his business if he forms a symbiotic relationship with the bus service.

Look up the 1514 Bus route in Lisbon, roundabout galore!
Bus route demand, just like traffic density, depends on the time of day. So at peak times (morning/afternoon/evening rush) more people will be riding the buses. But late night, early AM and mid day ridership will be much less. Easy to kinda forget that when we all have day/night cycle turned off lol
I love Transit Focus episodes.
The persistent Count von Count pop-up/sound effect made this video top tier :P
Second that!
Verry subtle, but effective!
Pls, continue Magnolia County. It is just one of those series I know I will relax watching and knowing it is quality. Keep up the great work!
2:20 Phil's not about to take a side in that fight 😂
I caught that too. 😹☠
Same I had to rewind to make sure I heard it right
I think having a first person perspective is important for getting a feel for the city. Thanks for the bus ride. 👍
I feel like the ridership is low because of the great cycle utilization?
@@MusicalInquisitIt‘s actually the same in Switzerland (1/3) and we have really low bike usage. Of course during rush hour we have full busses, trams, and trains but not throughout the day.
@@levin4638 oh, that is interesting! I didn’t know that, thanks!
I love following my bus lines drive around my county. Something soothing about a quality public transit system.
8:53 YES. FLOODING. FINALLY. MIDWEST FLOODS EXIST!! Thank you for remembering. I cant wait for a disasters update to get a super major flood episode.
That bus tour was brilliant. Nothing quite like seeing the evolution of the city and surrounding areas from ground level
Didnt expect a mention of the kendrick and drake beef, also at 15:00 irl id honestly expect to dee a roundabout there.
I love MC never been a fan of tropical builds for some reason…. So I’m glad your doing both :)
Helpful
Thanks for another great video, keep up the good work 💪🏻
This was a really nice video! I just wanted to say that I always love the "Editor Phil here"s, even if they address something I personally didn't notice, it's always cool to know that even though there's an issue of some kind you know about it and it's known about.
I also really liked the bus tour! Transit-camera tours of CS cities are the best.
We appreciate you, Phil! I love the idea of electric busses, leaving a 🌳 in the name of eco-conscious transit!
love the transit oriented episode! just noticed that many stops have impossible left turns right after them or have suppppper long stopping bays, sometimes the entire block!
Please upload full bus journeys of every route. Gosh that was relaxing
Also I feel sorry for any bus driver having to do a hill start in Ike Yards @49:05 because someone is crossing the street
I love it when he laughs at himself whilst editing and putting those laughtracks in. Je junction at the uni busdepot is horendous, but he turns that into such a positive, greatly done!!
I loved the bus tour! It gave a much more human scale to the city we don't see as much in the game
The Count popping up with the block counting is so , so funny. Actually, all of your edits are very funny, especially the self-deprecating ones. Love this channel.
Finally, the busses are getting an update!
In the US? There’s only one city with a population of less than 230,000 people with a modern streetcar system, and that city has a population of just over 150,000.
also a big tram fan here, wish magnolia county would add them
Love trams too, but it’s just not realistic for this city and build.
The yellow line should go clockwise through the industrial park.
Get an easy looping just to add to service without extra cost.
Love this series. I would like to see some density upgrades in Bend and and a development into something big. Slowly but steadily ramping up habitants.
YAY!! I was beginning to think the MC world was forgotten!
i think you should put the stops closer to homes (more people, less time walking, less streets need to be crossed, no traffic being interrupted by huge waves of pedestrians) like putting a single line that goes to the neighbourhood, then another line (with more frequency so people dont have to wait at the station too long) that goes to commercial zones, it would probably maximize ridership and have minimal risk of accidents
Always appreciate a transit focused episode.
hey Phil, had thought about a good story reasoning for you to switch to the electric buses and to incorporate taxi stands into the system. the newly elected governor would want to keep some of the promises that helped put her in power to placate the citizens to act as a bit of political theatre. the "Look, I did this thing for you.
I really like the bus terminal with a good span bus bay with circulation, I love to know more about amenities inside the building and how it works
Yay! Back to Magnolia!
So glad to have another video finally. I know how much work you put into these though, and I do not mind the wait. Just super excited! Wish I could watch it all right now, I will be back to finish it. Commenting for some engagement because I love this series so much!
Thanks! Keep making story-driven cities skylines and i'll be here forever :)
Your the first CS2 Player I’ve seen not place two stops at the turn around point! Thank you! 🚌
I adore the editing of these videos to include the memes, The Count especially startled a giggle out of me when he first appeared in the corner!
Glad to be back!!
I think that any electric bus system should probably be trolleybus. The numbers show that in real life, they make much more sense than battery electric in the majority of cases.
you mean using power to transport heavy batteries isn't a good idea? :) I think that option in game isn't as ideal however
doesn't Chuckles have a zoo to run? it's time for him to pack it in and go home.
also, any thoughts on keeping busses flowing through the bus stations?
@@CityPlannerPlays Anarchy + pedestrian paths through the building
I'm surprised you didn't utilize more dedicated bus lanes. You tend to make stuff like that look real good and feel natural.
Love a Mag County vid
Love a Bus
Love a Infrastructure
Simple as
🚌
I feel like the north forkstop could benefit from a pedestrian path connecting to those denser homes so they don't have to "hike" so far
been watching for years now and something Ive always wanted to see added to your cities is an Amish community or small farm towns. The midwest and specifically southern michigan is littered with these and think it would be really cool to see
Love the cameo from The Count
Love the Episode. It has some great tips for when my work settles down.
All that said, did you consider heavy rail (Subway type trains), Light rail (trolleys), or even (Hold on to your hat) monorail? It strikes me a loop or three around the area, with a spoke to the largest employers and the University might be more effective. At each community have the main bus terminal at the rail station and use small, more fuel mini and micro busses. As a new community springs up, start from a stop on the train line and build out from there.
This would give Chuckles a chance to upgrade his taxi service to a small bus provider and contract out with the growing communities.
Really glad to see you continuing the series again!
An intense and enjoyable episode, Electric busses are a must I feel
Heck yeah! Have to love the seasons in Madison, Winter and Construction.
The city I live in for example you can easily see a number of them waiting at bus stations during certain times of day.
im happy this format of video is back
i always smile when i hear you say "dreg" cause it reminds me of an old friend i had who was from Wisconsin! thanks for the chill video!
I think adding taxi terminals to each bus stop would be a way of appeasing Chuckles, a little back scratching to keep him happy enough to not be a major throne in the side the next time there is a big development he does not agree with. BTW, congrats on being Knighted...Sir Planner. :)
Hurray for you going to be adding super nodes soon! There's been a few spots that have been begging for them since East Bend was incorporated.
Please keep it up with the longer episodes!! I can veg out for an hour now lol
In Northfork, it looks like you just need a small pedestrian path "south" of the park to connect to the shoreside road of homes!
39:43 In the game you can hover your cursor over the white circle that visualises the stop in the lines schematic and it will show you how many passangers are waiting there for the line you have selected. Comparing this number to the number of people waiting at the stop in total will give you the answer your looking for.
The old city tour style! I love the drive through
Nice to see the bus stops positioned relative to intersections so that departing passengers can't cross in front of a bus that ought to be zipping off to its next destination
On Elk Lane, if possible, it would be nice if you added some staff parking for the bus depot. Elk Lane is in the bus depot you built in this episode.
