@@VeelofarCanlander isn't exactly hypercompetitive. There are people playing it that way, but a lot of the fun of the format is that 100 card singleton gives a lot of room for expression/picking your pet cards, since you're frequently going 8 cards deep on a given effect.
51:24 I know it doesn’t matter since wheeler could just have floated mana/copied afterwards, but technically he only controlled lands with 6 different names when he played the Glacial Chasm and so shouldn’t have made a zombie. (Unless the Thespians Stage was already copying something before becoming a Spara’s Headquarters and I missed it, then it did matter) This also happens after the Wargate, and at that point it was just not supposed to happen and couldn’t be substituted by a different line.
At least it didn't affect the outcome of the game. The Z-boys were never relevant. Serge is officially reinstated as the premier lands pilot of North 100 Showdown.
Love watching you guys talk through matchups we’ve seen in the year end or elsewhere. I love the mix of top tier decks and more unconventional brews on this show
I usually pay lrrmtg videos as white noise in background so I can fall asleep to your lovely voices, but the showdown grabs my attention and is a pleasant surprise every other Wednesday! I don't play Canlander myself, but love watching and wish my friends had interest so I could play it
At 51:20 there's a mistake, since the thespian stage is a copy of spara's headquarters Benjamin now controls only 6 different land names and should not be getting a zombie.
The first time it happens isn’t a mistake, just a mis-sequence since he could’ve just played the land first? But the Dark Depths entering shouldn’t have made a zombie.
in game 5 where wheeler copies his spara's headquarters with thespain stage, it turns off the field of the dead because it cares about differently named lands
Game one: OK, that combo is nuts, good thing it isn't too fast, right? Game two: Yeah, that's creatures turning sideways very quickly, guess it's a fair counter. Game three: OH NO Game four: Yep, creatures turning sideways can still get there. Game five: Magic as Richard Garfield intended, victory through a large hole in the ground and a giant block of ice containing something spooky.
Around 51 minutes, Ben forgot that Field of the Dead needs 7 differently named lands, but his Thespian's Stage had been renamed to Spara's Headquarters (he could have sequenced differently, so it didn't really matter)
wheeler tutors for glacial chasm. nelson plays boseiju. wheeler survives for multiple turns at one life due to glacial chasm. nelson wishes that his burn spells were instants.
great games all around. i did notice a couple of irrelvant misses on some rules in game 5 spefically fork bolt wouldnt of delt damage cause glacial chasm prevents all damage and not just combat damage and and also yal forgot to introduce day night after outland liberator entered play although honestly i dont blame you for not wanting to bother tracking that crap for literally one card thats dying immedeatly anyway
Not trying to do a gotcha but genuinely asking & trying to learn At 19:45 wheeler is at 1 and pays 1 life to crack his waterlogged grove. Does glacial chasm prevent him from losing the life he paid? I thought paying life/losing life is different than damage. Glacial chasm says “prevent all damage that would be dealt to you” the specific wording of fastbond that it “deals 1 damage to you” is why glacial chasm combos with it right?
checked land oracle list and yeah there wasn't a way to live questy that I could see if the deck ran llanowar reborn, it would have been possible to grow a zombie into chump range, but I don't really think the card is high enough synergy to run just as a bad tech against QB
I would have to go back and do some glacial chasm studying again, but I would check whether you can activate horizon lands at 1 life with a chasm in play, because it's obviously worded differently to fastbond, which actually does damage to you. Not screaming cheat or anything, just something to check to make sure of in the future.
The Horizon lands either were lands with every basic land type due to the Dryad, or they were used to activate the ability of drawing a card, not tapped for mana.
This 5c deck is my favorite I have seen on North 100. I love canlander and would play it if I lived in Canada and had a play group to play with but alas I live in the PNW. I have a 5c Kenrith lands combo control reanimator commander deck and wish I could play with some of the cards that arent banned in Canlander like Fastbond and the Moxen. My play group plays very high powered commander decks but no where mear what you can get to in canlander. Maybe I should just proxy some canlander decks and try and convince my friends to play 😂
He’s gonna deal 5 either way due to exalted, so the only difference would be that attacking with it ends with the goblin tapped, which is technically worse even if it won’t matter in the slightest.
I for sure got TStage and Vesuva mixed up, and I’m like “but… the stage is a headquarters now. It can’t be a depths” but yeah… it.. it gains the copy ability thing.. yea >_> my encyclopedic knowledge of cards failed me 😔
Game 5 the field of the dead triggers when it shouldn't have be the thespian stage was a copy of sparas headquarters, and therefore doesn't have a different name
Really did not end up mattering but in game 3 Wheeler should of been at 17 and not 16 as he took a damage from the fetch land but didn't gain the 1 life back from when the land he fetched for entered off of courser of kruphix ability
I feel so WALCOMED and APPROCIATED!
I can't belive they turned you into a drawing tablet.
What an incredible username. Rare to see such a direct reference to A Wrinkle in Time in the wild.
“I don’t have a lot of interaction except for the ones that remove players.”
Is such a hard line that the smooth way Nelson said it took me off guard
Playing the older Highlander decks on this show would be a treat. Sort of like a Blast from the Past event
I second this idea. I'd love to see what kind of decks were alive back before Canlander had any Internet presence.
This is a great idea
Would be awesome to see how much it changed!
I love the new high production value in the Showdown editing. I think it's Ulmer who does it, so I hope he feels my aprociation.
They should all feel approciated, but especially the editor bc the post production is fabulous
+1 on the post prod appreciation, keep it up Bengineering
Best mtg content on TH-cam. I don’t play this format but I never ever miss an episode.
Same for me
Sounds like a big mistake. You should definitely play this format. It's super fun, can confirm
Yeah, same. Hyper competitive magic is cool to watch, but I can’t stand playing it.
Same here!

"I Didn't Get A Turn Three" is a solid button I'd absolutely wear with pride and shame.
I'll walcom such a button and apricot it dearly.
I like the idea that 10 years ago Jacob was playing a proxy of a cared he called "Thasa's Oracle" and everyone was thinking "that's not a magic card"
Questing Beast is my favourite anti-fog tech. The One Ring and Field of the Dead are nothing before its Questing Majesty.
And his little brother, bonecrusher giant
Questing Beast is such a perfect aggressive green card. I love it.
It's frequently relevant in my monoG legends commander deck.
I think you mean Glacial Chasm and not Field of the Dead, but absolutely. What a creature it is.
@@shatteredseraphine Field of the Dead is also relevant because it makes an army that is powerless before Questing Beast's might.
thank you for walcoming me, it's great to be approciated. :)

26:05 the Ben pop was fantastic!
The rare five round match! Appreciate y’all going through all the work to make them and get them online
It's so awesome seeing content from people at or near the top of their field and experience them enjoying it.

Wheeler says "I'm going to..." with a long pause exactly the way Jacob does while playing this deck. It's a symptom.

Nelly proliferating DD and Glacial Chasm is the the coolest thing since Robin Dark Ritual'd a hippy on the FNPF
Thoracle is one of those decks where my love for Price of Progress just skyrockets to an all time high.
Always look forward to these videos, makes my day when they are posted.
"Lush Portico" is a really Star Wars name
What a crazy first game (to the crazy quick gamestwo and three) . Love this whole series especially for games like this.

I'm very engaged with this showdown / throw-down 😁😁😁
Great, great episode. Thank you!
Excellent, as always. Thank you!
Really nice to see a 5 game set with competitive lists
Around 51 minutes, Ben forgot that Field of the Dead needs 7 differently named lands, but his Thespian's Stage had been renamed to Spara's Headquarters (he could have sequenced differently, so it didn't really matter)
Came here to check if anyone else noticed that. lol
51:00 Ben turned Thespian stage into a tri land which lowered his different name lands by one thus not being able to trigger the Field of the Dead.
54:24 Field shouldnt trigger again (7 different names, not just 7 lands)
1:03:31 Fork Bolt is prevented with Chasm. (Former L1, you guys typically are on point haha)
Game 2 was so clean! GG Nelly
"all damage dealt to me is reduced by 0" That Chasm doesn't sound too good ;)
wheeler tutors for glacial chasm.
nelson plays boseiju.
wheeler survives for multiple turns at one life due to glacial chasm.

I'm glad we got to see questing beast smashing in. Your glacial chasm won't save you this time, Wheeler!
can Arc Trail really hit the nissa there at 15:40?
1:03:35 glacial chasm? I know it didn’t change anything. Just keeping game state.
The best show to ever do it!
The premier Lands pilot!
The best content for a format I dont play
Welcome to Canadiens shuffling while discussing old magic cards, and also playing solitaire on the side.😉
Wheeler sums up Glacial Chasm really well at the end of the video. That card is a hoser (in that it hoses aggro and midrange)
Stats update: Nelson lost the die roll, putting him at 1 for 10. Even more interestingly, his only winning die roll was against Serge.

Cracking the grove for a draw does not cost life, only using it for colored mana. You are correct that paying life would kill him there.
@@hendrikkeyser9854😮I read every card except the grove 🤦♂️
Thank you for the helpful comment
44:30 Is BEnin a Taboo or "I lost the Game" scenario? Because I dont think he's talking about Magic.
I'm a little busy this week, I'll get you guys the stats sometime soon tho
how did Jacob's list not include field of the dead???
game two was legit 😤
checked land oracle list and yeah there wasn't a way to live questy that I could see
if the deck ran llanowar reborn, it would have been possible to grow a zombie into chump range, but I don't really think the card is high enough synergy to run just as a bad tech against QB
Does each player build the deck from their own collection? Or does llr have a mtg library for the show?

@@poiri ah ok missed the exalted
19:46 Shouldn't Wheeler be dead or does Glacial Chasm also prevent loss of life. Fetch lands at 1 life are precarious.
He played the fetch land but never fetched with it.
“Price of Progress? :)”
I'm dying to know what the "game" is that:
A) doesn't count while recording, and
B) has destroyed the way Wheeler talks...
Right? I need to know
We've got the showdown, throwdown but will there be a magical hoedown ?
Turn 4 PoP was beautiful.
Might be a pointless question but what’s your playgroup’s opinion on proxies? I know you have real cards but curious if others proxy test decks etc.
I believe the Canlander community as a whole is pro-proxy.
I'm reasonably sure that "not the best printing" at 46:03 is a euphemism for a proxy here, so that should answer your question.
I really feel like I watched that match very well 😂
Please explain the inclusion of flinthoof boar, isn’t that card just outclassed at this point?
It’s a 2 mana 3/3, and sometimes that’s just enough.
I love you all so much.
I for sure got TStage and Vesuva mixed up, and I’m like “but… the stage is a headquarters now. It can’t be a depths” but yeah… it.. it gains the copy ability thing.. yea >_> my encyclopedic knowledge of cards failed me 😔
I’m kinda sad the lands deck isn’t playing Spelunking/Scapeshift shenanigans.
Why is wheeler on 9 points instead of 10?
I remember walking into the dorm and sadly feeling walcome
Price of progress is one of my favorite red cards.
"I/We aprociate you" could be a button
Game 5 the field of the dead triggers when it shouldn't have be the thespian stage was a copy of sparas headquarters, and therefore doesn't have a different name
My roommate in college use to walcome in the bathroom and never cleaned it up. I stopped using our bathroom after he told me.
A wizard? I thought it was revealed that Thalia was under the ice.
The TWO MINUTE GAME
Where is surge?
I love Walcom tablets. :D
a whole 5 games yes please
damn that second match tho
Huh. PoP not being at 1 still feels weird to me.
I sneezed and game 2 was over.
sneezed again and game 3 was done
Also I cannot name how many games I have won with Glacial Chasm 😂 my playgroup is so traumatized by that card
weeee hype
Really did not end up mattering but in game 3 Wheeler should of been at 17 and not 16 as he took a damage from the fetch land but didn't gain the 1 life back from when the land he fetched for entered off of courser of kruphix ability
