      @@WJS774 I've used a bunch of FLIR and other thermal cameras for work over the years and I reckon that might be possible as im not sure the upper and lower limits on them actually are (and it varies by model)
      Regardless though it selects a range of temperatures that it maps to the colors and I'm assuming that is done by taking either a point value reading at the target or an average from the FOV. That means that wherever you point it it will show temperatures within a certain range around that temperature and if your outside of that range it will have no color to map to it and it's just black.
      If the camera was to focus on just the steel it would have worked likewise if it was on the dry ice alone it would have worked. But by having the entire FOV being of a typical temperature it used this to map the colors and so thats why the people, ground, etc are all showing normally, as well as the area of balanced heat between the steel and ice. But, both the dry ice and red hot steel are not.

    • @WJS774
      @WJS774 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@k1ng5urfer Yes, obviously it varies by model, but I doubt that the commonly available ones will work for red hot metal. That's going to be a specialised application if I'm any judge.

    The reason the steel went slow was because the steel was an example of the Leidenfrost effect where the liquid or solid is evaporated or sublimated with such a heat difference that the evaporating/sublimating matter forms a layer of gas which in turn boils the rest of the matter and effectively floats the cooler matter, and the air insulates the matter which slows the rate of evaporation/sublimation. You can see this with liquid nitrogen on a room temperature surface or water on a very hot stove. This effect can be compared to an air hockey puck, if the puck was the one floating itself.

    • @mmfiorica
      @mmfiorica 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      So if you were heat the dry ice quickly enough with high heat would that cancel out the effect? or could you use a vacuum tube and somehow keep the heat constant?

    • @DavidS-qn3jm
      @DavidS-qn3jm 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@mmfiorica I think you need to put them both in a hydraulic press, crushing the steel into the dry ice.

      @DANGJOS 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@DavidS-qn3jm I would think the weight of the 10 kg of steel would already provide enough pressure to at least limit the Leidenfrost effect. The reality is that the heat of sublimation of dry ice is very high, so it can resist the iron quite well.

    Dry Ice 571 kJ/kg heat of sublimation. Iron 0.444 J/gC heat capacity. For 10kg, Iron (assuming 1kC to 25C) 4.33MJ, Dry Ice 5.71MJ. Dry ice wins with 24% left on paper in ideal mix. The iron only went through half the height of the dry ice. Iron has density of 7.87g/cc, so only 635cc of iron went in. This means roughly 635cc dry ice melted from iron, meaning only 1000g of dry ice melted. Video is 10kg of Red Hot Steel Vs. 1kg of Dry Ice!

    • @Beyondthepress
      @Beyondthepress  7 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      I am quite sure that there was much more dry ice since I bought 10kg of it and used about 95%. Sure the steel didn't melt it all but probably much more than 1 kg. I am not sure about exact weight of the steel but since it about half the size of our bigger clump that is 20kg I assume it's quite close to 10 kg

    Vote Lauri for most important person of the century! There is poll on small local newspaper about who is most important person from Tampere (our home city) of last 100 years. I got this idea that I should win this since I have the most views on TH-cam :D The rules of the poll say that the person should:
    -Done work that benefits all people in Tampere -> I have been dealing with those dangerous creatures.
    -Helped to make Tampere known on fields like science, art or culture -> Our videos are all of those and they sure reach quite a lot of people
    So as you see I am perfect candidate. Last year I won the most positive person of the town vote. It was great and we crushed the award so I think this would be good next step.
    And of course if we get some dangerous trophy we have to deal with it :D
    Here is the link to the poll response.questback.com/almaregions/dcnu152sy1
    If you want to vote for me don’t pick any of the persons on the list and fill the following fields:
    100. Oma ehdokas, kuka?
    Your own candidate since they didn’t but me on the list for some reason. So put my whole name Lauri Vuohensilta on that field if you think that I should win
    Miksi juuri hän? Perustele, miksi juuri sinun ehdokkaasi pitäisi valita vuosisadan tamperelaiseksi?
    Why your own candidate should win? This isn’t probably very important but they say that the best answers win prices on local caffee here in Tampere :D
    Yhteystietosi:
    * Nimi: Your name
    * Osoite: Address
    * Postinumero ja -toimipaikka: zip code and town and if you want win the prices it’s probably good to add also country :D
    * Puhelinnumero: phone number
    * Sähköposti: email
    And if you want to get sales calls from our local newspaper check the boxes under these :D
    Huge thanks for all who vote for me! If I win it would be the funniest thing ever!

    This was my video idea but we did also one other red hot steel vs. something video that was Anni's idea. The idea was so crazy and stupid that I am quite sure you guys are going to have hard time guessing it right but if somebody gets it right I am going to list youtube account's that got it right on end of the video :D
    Or at least first 10 if you somehow get sure answer and there is zillion right answers :D

      i got it right! guessed steel becase it went through the layer of ice on the lake and there it had a shit ton of water cooling it down when dry ice doesnt make that water.
      Next, white hot tungsten cube vs dry ice!

      Basically the heat is expended to melt the ice but the ice does not have to expend any energy to stay cool so the ice will usually win simply because it doesn't have to do any work.

    An excellent demonstration of what would happen, if a red-hot steel 10kg weight is set down on a Martian ice cap. Plus interesting carbonated cocktails. Hopefully there aren't many fish there, to be affected by all that CO2 sublimating. Would you like some ice with your lake, ladies and gentlemen?

    Specific heat capacity of steel: 511 Joules per kilogram **per Kelvin**.
    Enthalpy of sublimation of CO2: 571,000 Joules per kilogram
    To bring the steel (at about 620 degrees C) to room temperature (about 20 C) would take about 300,000 Joules per kilogram.

    I think that is one of the characteristics of dry ice. The cooling effect is good but not in direct contact.
    I think its because the carbon dioxide goes directly to a gas ot creates and insulating layer that prevents good heat transfer. This is different than regular ice that turns into water which helps thermal transfer. This is also why when you throw it in the water you get more exciting results the water helps energy transfer since it can get closer, maybe because some of the co2 can absorb directly into solution and avoid forming a layer too?

    Enthalpy of sublimation is very high, but specific heat capacity is for _every single degree,_ and 1400 is a lot of degrees. I reckon that cancels out and 1kg of steel will do for 1kg of dry ice.

    • @WJS774
      @WJS774 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Turns out 1kg of steel is enough for 1.16kg of dry ice assuming that's the only place the heat is going (which of course it isn't). Given the dry ice much lower density it makes sense that the steel won.

    Materials like dry ice or liquid nitrogen make poor refrigerants due to a layer of insulating gas caused by the massive difference in temperatures. Same reason the dry ice dose not make ice in the lake.
