Sad to say that it's one of my fastest cars I've ever had. 0-70mph with AWD and v-tec kicking in is Amazing. And I haven't fully matted it yet so it has a little bit more. But I didn't want to take a chance to slipping my CVT belt. Brochure says 190hp.

    I own a 2017 Honda Civic Touring with the turbo charged engine and CVT transmission. Here are my impressions after driving it for more than 1,200 miles. I’m not going to get all technical and what’s right and wrong about CVT, but how someone with no knowledge of this technology behaves and feels.
    There are no physical gear shift like in a normal transmission. It’s literally one long gear so it maximizes engine power and torque. It’s literally power you can feel. You can “ease” off on the gas and it’ll simulate a “downshift” into what it sounds like the next gear or overdrive feel. Very smooth and gets quiet.
    There is a “Sport” mode in which it allows the engine to rev higher giving you more power. When you stomp on it, the CVT kicks in quicker allowing the engine to put out higher revs which in turn makes you go faster.
    Take it back off sport mode and it’s back to normal rev and acceleration.
    The transmission will not change gears so it’ll sound like it’s stuck in one gear the whole time until you get to a very high speed or when you let go of the accelerator.
    That’s it. Now you’ll know what to expect in a car with a CVT transmission. Now, I hear Honda made a special CVT transmission for us by adding a torque converter with the CVT? Don’t know if this is true or not but it’s definitely awesome if they did.

  • @thenewlaird
    @thenewlaird 6 ปีที่แล้ว +81

    That simulated gear change defeats the whole purpose of the cvt. Why would you want the revs to drop when you can can just stay at the max power point?

Returned to Hondas. My CRV auto is smooth, capable and reliable. I have a Honda Beat ‘91 (for the JDM). It’s fabulous. I’ve driven many makes of rental cars worldwide. Some horrid ‘prestige’ vehicles. All are judged against my Honda experience. 16 Hondas to date. I recall the Jaguar salesman asking me how I rated my Honda garage. Great I said. He said I’d hadn’t had the Jaguar experience yet! Turned out to be sat on a leather Chesterfield sofa waiting for yet another ‘fix’. I just bought a 2020 Honda CR-V which is equipped with the CVT and so far, I have no complaints with it and it's actually pretty quick when paired with the 1.5 Turbo engine. I know many Honda owners who have the CVT whether it's the CR-V, Accord, or Civic and most say that they're fine with it. For longevity though, I personally don't know what Toyota's maintenance schedule is but for Honda it's recommended that you change the CVT fluid every 30K miles and not drive so aggressively.

    I didn't hear anything about City driving or comparisons so here are my 2 cents: The Honda Civic CVT can be really peppy and to the point when you need it to be (1.5T). I drove plenty of other cars with CVTs (non Honda) and a majority feel very sloppy and slow to the punch. I drove both manual and CVT 10th gen Civics and personally enjoy the CVT more since it is also sporty and convenient. My commute is weird since I live in the type of area where one direction takes you to back roads and rural nothing while another brings you into the stop and go h&ll of inner city Chicago grid traffic. THIS is when my CVT shines. I can focus on not hitting jaywalkers or angry law-breaking impatient drivers and not worry about a clutch or stall. Best part is I can still let it rip once I am out of the grid and back home.
    I do PREFER the 6 speed manual but that is due to reliability rather than "coolness". Those are very basic power transfer systems and after many years of testing there is no doubt that they will outlive the CVT counterparts (if taken care of and not raced). I would be driving a 6 speed Civic Hatch right now if it weren't for my Chicago grid drive.
    Final note the paddle shifters allow for good engine braking. I use them all the time in more hilly rural areas where you'd otherwise be riding your brakes.

    Great vid and the moral to the story for all the new modern CVT transmissions is...treat them with a bit of respect, drive sensibly, service if suggested or required, and don't abuse it. If you drive like most of the maniacs that I see on the roads here in AmishLand who lease German garbage then run it into the ground, don't buy a CVT. Otherwise, they're great.

I’m not even an aggressive driver and idk too much about cars

    A little off topic, but the CVT in my '19 CR-V runs like a dream - and for a CVT, it's got some get up and go. And part of that is thanks to Honda's bulletproof 2.4L N/A engine.
    That being said, as good as Honda's CVT's are, Toyota builds even better CVT's - I saw their newest version in the Prius and the Corolla, and it actually has a launch gear (bka 1st gear) to get the car off and running.

  • @kenhoward3512
    @kenhoward3512 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Nonsense: There are, indeed, actual, physical, preset ratio changes when using the shift paddles: it is not "simulated." It doesn't matter if the transmission, internally, uses two big shift drums or a bunch of little gears, it is still shifting preset ratios when you select a higher or lower "gear." He repeatedly claims it's "a more refined experience" (he knows that's BS), but luxury vehicles *never* use CVTs, and high-performance cars typically avoid them, along with all trucks. Those of us who actually *like* driving, loathe the disconnected-feeling and droning of CVTs, which prioritize fuel economy over all else, though the average driver likely doesn't notice or care. I appreciate Mazda, which - prioritizing the driving experience - avoids them (as of 2025 models).

      If you compared econ cars like a civic than the manual will be faster. Even if those cars put it in a so called "sport mode". Also, the manual driver will have to get a head start by launching the car and red line ever gear by slam into the next gears. Super bad for the car but the manual will win because the CVT can't do that.
      Performance cars with automatics are different through. I would say the automatic will win in those races. Those transmissions are build for pure speed and will out shift the human driver.

    • @chocoboblue99
      @chocoboblue99 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you want efficiency than you need to go through all the gears from 1 to 6 at 3K RPM. If you switch at 4K RPM than it's okay, but not as efficient. If you just want speed you can just do 1st to 2nd to get all the way to 60. lol
      If really need to pass someone, you need to down shift to a lower gear. I like going from 6th to 4th gear most of the time to pass someone, but I only do it if I really want to merge lanes. Otherwise, I just wait till it clear and merge.

    • @practicalguy973

      Even a traditional automatic is a much simpler more durable design by its nature. I think the car manufactures have found something marketable in the CVT since it saves about 3mpg and can have faster acceleration but has en expiry date since its a belt system with huge repair costs. Anything that is a belt drive always needs replacing and in car CVT they added the complication of pressurizing the pulleys with an oil seal and pump which is failing a lot in the Nissans and Subarus. CVT belts even if chain or steel plate belts, still have belt movement and flexing and they fail eventually. Anything I've ever owned with a belt has always needed replacing. Steel gears on the other hand are always designed to not need replacement.
