    if you put a lamp or strong light inside the shell you can see where the hole for the hardware are very clearly no matter what wrap you use and just cut or drill where the light is

    After watching your tutorial I thought I`d give it a try . Contacted Bum and ordered 3 samples . Picked the "Ed Sullivan pearl" and gave them my sizes . Had the wraps in less than a week !! They were cut perfectly for every drum. I wanted a Ringo looking set and they look FAB ! Installation went really well because I followed your instructions to a tee. A huge thanks to you and Bum Wraps (they were great) I finally have a great looking Ringo set without spending a small fortune . Love your videos !

    WOW, they look GREAT. You did a really nice job. Good video too. Can you post a few pictures of the other sets you wrapped after these?
    I'm anxious to try it.
    A good friend (drummer) and I (not a drummer) just hand-sanded, wet-sanded, power compounded and power polished every single scratch, nick. scuff and buff mark out of a set of five 1976-77 clear Vista-Lites, inside and out, (and polished all the chrome too). Almost anything would be a faster reconditioning job than that. It was messy too.
    This looks lots faster for his "next project".... and we're all "practiced-up".

    Thanks for posting. Love the detail; and the black hardware. Add black tension rods though! That would drive me nuts, having chrome and black together. But I'm nuts anyway, so... so nuts I refinished all of my hardware using truck bedliner for a cool, durable, and textured matte look.

    From my experience, the best thing to do when making the holes for the lugs is to drill with a smaller drill bit first from the interior of the shell into a small block of scrap wood on the exterior of the shell to prevent the wrap from lifting, and not applying too much pressure , drilling slowly , going in a little a time, taking your time.. This will give you a nice and even hole with no lift.. This process should be done when the high bond tape has fully cured to the seam, which would be about 24 hrs.. For smaller drums like this 12x8 tom, the best thing would be to poke a whole from inside of the shell with either a thin screw driver, or thick nail to act as a guide, then drill from the outside of the shell into the interior of the shell..Or you can use the same procedure as i stated earlier, but using a small hand drill.. It's a lot faster, safer for the protection of the wrap, and will look factory..

    Things i do before dis-assembling the drum:
    If it has a mount on the drum mark where the mount was on the inside of the shell with a pencil.
    Also mark where the badge was on the inside of the shell and make the mark an arrow letting you know if the drum is up-right or upside-down (Most of the time you can tell this by where the air hole is).
    Clean shell of any tape or glue that might be left from the old wrap using a razor blade just scrapping the shell shaving it.
    Measure where the badge holes were if your badge uses screws.
    Use a small bit in an dremel tool for your badge holes once the wrap is on.
    Wrapping:
    I trim my wrap 1" longer then required to go around the shell. I do a 1" seam and start my wrap on the back lug holes. Use a straight edge to pencil a line across the shell where you need to start your wrap and an arrow directing you which way to wrap it. I use the white 1" double-sided film tape on the shell first putting that tape where you penciled your straight edge line (This keeps the wrap on the shell for you to get nice and tight instead of using clamps) . Then once the wrap is around the shell nice and tight i use the red 1" heavy-duty double-sided film tape (solvent acrylic adhesive) on the wrap. No need to glue a seam with thin wrap. If you do have much thicker wrap i do all the same process but just not the red 1" heavy-duty double-sided film tape on the wrap seam instead i rough it up a bit with sand paper both parts of the seam and apply 3M 30NF neutral adhesive contact to both parts of the seam let dry and stick it together using a j roller.
    Prepping for assembly:
    I use an awl from inside the shell and as you're poking the holes hold a small block of wood on the opposite side of the holes so the awl doesn't just poke all the way through the holes lifting up your wrap. Then use an cordless drill with a step bit going inside the holes from outside of the shell. Perfect holes and if you wanted even cleaner use exacto knife afterwards to clean the holes up but it's not needed since the lugs hides any of that anyways.

    when the shell was stripped down, is there a difference between the top and botrtom of it? Does is matter what side the batter head and reso head goes on? I think the floor toms will have mounts but what about the smaller toms?

    I couldn't sleep so I decided I would listen to some beats. You know, give me some ideas for jamming tomorrow. Now I'm wrapping drums with Randy, also browsing the Bum Wrap site, cause I have some extra drums that I have added to my kit that don't quite match and like most musicians us drummers especially it is unnoticeable to anyone else, but it erks me to death. So yeah, Thanks for the discount deal... I'm gonna match these babies right or maybe do them all something new...

    I have been wrapping drums for 25 years. I do not like cheap stickyback wraps. I do it like they did back in the 60's. I use contact cement. It's harder to do but it last for another 50 years. I have never had a drum come back to me.Some drum companies are easier than others to remove the wrap. Vintage Gretsch comes off easy because the shells are maple. Vintage Ludwig and Slingerland are much harder to remove because of the mahogany wood. You have to use a heat gun and be careful the old wrap will catch fire if it gets to hot.

  • @sticksbass
    @sticksbass 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    isnt there a cheaper way? i just bought a floor tom and this co wants about 50.00 for a wrap for it.

    • @spike3505
      @spike3505 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +sticksbass It may not be as hardwearing if you're touring or working a lot but maybe the wrap used on cars is a possibility for you, there are some crazyass colors and designs etc. I know its a year down the road from your question but maybe this would apply to others also. Just a thought!

    • @sticksbass
      @sticksbass 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      steve milligan yeah, i think i saw that in black on ebay; very inexpensive! i can also toss the wrap and polyurethane them but now im working too much to get around to it; ha.

    • @spike3505
      @spike3505 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've used some on my car. It has its own adhesive, just perl off the backing. Heat it up with a hairdryer or hotair gun and you can manipulate it into some strange shapes. I'll bet it would take longer to remove the hardware than it would to wrap. Its so easy to use.

    • @sticksbass
      @sticksbass 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      steve milligan someone selling it told me people use it for drums you just have to make sure the surface is smooth bc imperfections show since its thin.

    • @spike3505
      @spike3505 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is thin so you want to make sure you don't have dents, gouges etc but for the price of it, if your current wrap is in ok condition you could have a NEW LOOK every month or so.
