  • Heavy Beat is a game I've been thinking about for a long time. Only two months ago I've started working on it full time in hopes of having it released as my first fully fledged indie game.
I'll continue posting devlogs with the progress I've made as well as announce when the game goes into public alpha.

Good luck with your game! I liked what I saw so far. I hope you finish the game so I can play it with the full experience.

I was planning to make the same point as Gioele about colour difference between the platforms and the void, and as he said, the best colours to pair up would be negatives: orange and blue, purple and yellow, green and pink, etc. But really you could do the colour even a shade different, like light blue vs. dark blue; just anything that helps visually distinguish. You've got a lot of moving parts, and with the flashing light at the far end sending light pulses down there's a lot for the eye to process. The bright lights are good for the party atmosphere so no need to alter those I don't think, just being able to distinguish the void and platforms will take some strain off the eye.
If you plan to release on Steam, you could set up a group for the game as a place to put FAQs and allow people to post questions directly to you. Only relevant if you use Steam though.
And yeah I think an options menu would be good. It might be worth considering adding a mouse sensitivity slider as well. It's something that a lot of people have their own preference about, and if the sensitivity isn't quite right it can make games harder than they need to be, especially for a game like this that relies heavily on manoevrability.
It's a fun concept and a well-planned execution from what I can see, it's simple enough that it's manageable for you alone but still requires some skill. I look forward to seeing how it progresses.

Thank you for the detailed feedback, I'll definitely try out those colour combinations and see how they match up to my current setup. I'm also planning on splitting the scene in two and having one colour scheme for the bright background and one colour scheme for the gameplay elements, just to give them a distinct visual look. Regarding the Steam page, I currently have no idea how I will release the game, it might be steam, it might be itch.io, time will tell when I approach that completion stage with the game. Regarding questions, I'll make sure to implement a feedback system directly in the game where you can write something and attach an email to it and I'll be able to personally respond to that.

coming from 9gag! I like the aesthetic of the game, but it is hard to see both the edges of the path and where the holes are. I think a monochrome/different colors might help distinguish the void from the path.
I see some RUN! inspiration, as well as a few others.
I like the idea of scores! and i think that reaching the end of the songs you put up might unlock more/ cosmetics (different pallets or smt). I'd like it if you made an infinite "playlist" version, where you can set a song list or folder and the game plays them one after another, as well as a more structured version.

Thank you so much for the feedback, it means a lot! The infinite playlist is definitely possible and I agree on the colors, I ve been struggling with color palettes a lot.

@@AltrayDigital it's all my pleasure. For palette inspiration I would look to both other techno punk games, or even the old windows media player image autogeneration for music.
That rythm game about destroying boxes with laser swords comes to mind. working with complementary colors might work out, they don't clash too much in neon: orange (yellow+red) and blue, or purple and yellow, green and red (but red is hard to do! prob need to tone down the saturation a lot)

That's a nice looking game. A little to bright in my opinion. Keep up the good work and we hope to see him on Steam real soon.

How on earth did you manage to make the game read hf and lf beats from any custom song?! This is mind-blowing to me. Amazing job, mate.

Hey, thank you! I'm using a library called Fmod which, coupled with a beat detection algorithm, allows me to "read" any audio file.

@@AltrayDigital nicely done and thanks for the tip 😁 I'll check the library out, must be interesting.
