I can actually remember my paternal grandmother making this one year for us kids on thanksgiving because we didn't want turkey or ham. She added shredded carrots and some really thinly sliced onion to the cabbage. I remember it being pretty good, seeing as how myself and all my cousins (11 of us total including my sister) were pretty rabid hotdog fiends back then.
Thank you for the memory :)

When I was a kid, my mom made sauerkraut and hot dog casserole. It had a sauce made of sauteed onions, brown sugar, mustard and catsup. The actual name of the recipe was Maxie's Franks and it came from The I Hate to Cook Book (great for retro recipes), by Peg Bracken. I liked it and still make it occasionally.

Not all Weight Watchers retro recipes taste nasty. I did WW way back when we had more meat to eat! The diet they followed then was based on the diabetic diet. Where you ate protein and vegetables and very little carbs. We had some pretty good recipes. This was back in the late sixties. They have changed the diet over these many years! 😊

I think that hot dogs were a big thing in the diet world there for a while. As a girl in the 70's I was fed chicken hotdogs that had been sliced super thin, lengthwise and then dry-fried in a pan and sprinkled with bacon salt to mimic bacon. Thinking back now, it sounds gag-worthy but at the time I liked it. It was part of The Diet Center's diet.

Your retro recipe series is very similar to a cooking blog project which existed here in Sweden and which became a cookbook/humour project. It was called The Brown Food and the "Brown Family" cooked from recipe cards from the 70s/80s which were left in some elderly person's drawers. They cooked and ate a meal a week or so, detailing the experience in a very humorous way. It was quite hilarious and usually horrendous.

Make creamed chipped beef on toast. My grandma was born in 1916 her mom used to make this and she made it for me growing up but would laugh and say how she "couldn't stand it back when they had to eat it"
Also my aunt made me a awesome sandwich back when I was about 7.. I'm 21 for the 20th time now. But we were broke out of pretty much everything.. she sliced green bell peppers fried them in butter with salt n pepper and served them on toasted raisin bread. I swear it is surprisingly delicious.. even when your not hungry lol

This sounds like a retro version of a meal my family makes. We usually do a casserole dish full of cabbage, potatoes(boiled to 60% done), a favorite sausage or brat, I like something a little spicy and salt, pepper, apple cider vinegar and a little water or chicken or veggie stock to make sure it cooks evenly. It is honestly delicious and you should try it. Or if you're being lazy just throw everything into an instapot or pressure cooker.

Recipes like this comes from an era where people got creative with cheap ingredients to feed the entire family. A ton of the meat markets were staffed by german immigrants and "anything sausage / sauerkraut (fermented cabbage)" came from them. People always asked the meat cutters for recipes and ideas on how, what to cook for little $$$$$

Oh! Can you imagine....It's 1969. Your hubby comes home from working at the aluminum mine and he's starved. You twin teenage boys have just finished ALL of the yard work and they are definitely STARVING. They are all looking forward to some of the good food they KNOW you've perfectly prepared just for them. Then you walk to the dinner table with this 'crown of weenies and soggy cabbage'..... Shhh...you can almost hear the creaking of their jaws and and thud as they hit the walnut table. You can see the grave disappointment on their sad faces. You can almost read their mind and hear their thoughts.... "Mom, you better pack your bags and stay a week at the Holiday Inn, 'cause you ain't liked much right now."🤨 Thank you, Weight Watchers. This single dish has been the probably cause of many failed marriages and to the dissolution of good parent/child relationships. The moral of this dinnertime story, "If it looks like $#!+, it's gonna taste like $#!+."🙏🏻😊

In El Salvador, we have this side dish to go with pupusas called curtido (I can’t remember the spelling) and it’s usually made with cabbage and onions and carrots and vinegar (among some other veggies if wanted). So when you added vinegar to the cabbage, it sounded soooo good right now. Haha.

I would like to see you try a Pink Azalea Cake. My Grandma used to make one for my birthday every year when I was a kid. I found a recipe in an old Betty Crocker cookbook from the 50’s but never made it.

Mmm Franks and slaw... This looks quite curious. I bet it'd benefit with some onions too.

I'd imagine wrapping the crown with overlapping strips of bacon would make it easier to keep the crown shape, and maybe eliminate the hidden toothpick problem alltogether.

Physics Only that’s why it was an effective diet food. One look and “naw, I’m not hungry”. My mum got these cards in the mail in the mid 80s. There was a special binder to keep them in and everything. Some of it was a true horror show. WW liked to use whatever new disaster science had dubbed “healthy” as long as it was low fat.

This is really one of the more appetizing recipes from WW of the era. It's just hot dogs and lightly steamed cabbage. This isn't a dish I'd likely seek out, but I would eat it happily if someone served it.

I mean shredded cabbage on your hot dogs isn't an awful decision at all.
EDIT: Really, pork sausage is better though.

Recipe itself doesn't seem horrendous like a lot of the other ones, at least it isn't encased in lemon jello and mayonnaise. I might give this one a shot sometime if I'm bored and have nothing but hot dogs and cabbage laying around.

I so love cabbage and vinegar, my dad is from North Carolina and he and I would go see his mom (nama) every summer and the one thing on the table for 3 meals a day was her fresh garden tomatoes and cucumbers with vinegar and black pepper, and every night at dinner she would add cabbage and vinegar....yummy
