- This is the moment an unsuspecting warthog walks down the road right into 2 lions that were waiting in ambush.

Warthogs and other prey animals will often use the roads, as it is a clear path for them, so they can easily spot predators in the area. Well… It didn’t work out as planned this time.

Shannon tells us the story:
“We had been driving along this quieter dirt road in Kruger Park one hot afternoon. This particular road was not as popular with visitors, which is why we decided to give it a try.”
“After about two hours of very little wildlife sightings, we were taken by surprise when two lionesses walked out on to the road in front of us. Everyone in the car perked up and we felt so incredibly lucky to have such a close lion sighting and with no other cars around at the time. We followed slowly behind the lions for while they made their way along the road. It appeared that this was a mature lioness accompanied by a sub or young adult female.”
“We already felt things couldn’t get much better, but we were in for a heck of a show. Out of nowhere, a warthog walked out onto the road maybe 90-100 meters ahead. The lions behavior instantly switched to hunting mode and they jumped into the tall grass to start their ambush.”
“The direction and strength of the wind was at the advantage of the lions and the warthog never stood a chance. It was grazing along the center of the road and slowly making its way in the direction of our car.”
“It was incredible to see the lions hunting tactics. The younger female started to make her way around to position herself behind the incoming warthog. Every move was steady and she kept glancing back to the older female as if almost for approval of her approach.”
“The older female remained hidden close to our car and waited for the right moment to strike. Once the warthog was in reach, the younger female hopped out behind it and frightened it forward right into the jaws of the mature female. We could not believe what we had just witnessed. The lions quickly dispatched the warthog and the air filled with the smell of its now exposed intestines. The two females made quick work of their fresh meal. This is truly an encounter I will never forget and feel so grateful to have witnessed.”

Amazing footage. I didn't see the 2nd lioness at all until the ambush. As others have noted earlier, the nonverbal communication and coordination of the lions is astounding.
Yeah. The way they can disappear into the grass.... imagine you as a human walking down that lane whistling.. and then you see a lioness charging towards you. You turn to run only to end up in the other lioness arms.

The patience those 2 lions showed was amazing. They probably could have ambushed the warthog sooner but they waited until it was almost a sure thing.

The way they totally disappeared in the grass is chilling in every way. A perfect ambush.
Not quite perfect first lion missed bad. Many people arnt aware of this but lions are not the apex predators they're made out to be. On a good end when they are getting enough food they at most only get 25% of the total prey they make an attempt to go after. And that's the good end. The reality for most is more like 10-15%.

@@themalhama9129 Yeah you are right, but in this case it was executed perfectly by both lions. The 1st lion snuck behind the warthog and spooked him in the direction of the 2nd ambushing lion which is a textbook play.
I found it interesting how they work as a team and timed it when to make the kill.

The way the first lioness literally pushed the warthog in the ambush of the second lioness. As soon as the warthog started running, the first lioness even slowed down. She was like: “He’s done”.
The coordination btw the 2 lioness is award winning, out of this world.

For all the people worried about the hog, it managed to fight them off and get away. They all are friends now and the hog and it's family often visit the lions and their pride for dinner

They do communicate in their own style. Note the younger cat moved behind spooking the prey right into the arms of the waiting / hidden lionness.

It's hard to hunt in the wild, this wasn't by chance.
The younger lioness slowly looped behind the warthog to the pounce and give it a fright so it would run into the adult and more experience lioness. Perfect ambush.

@@vintagevinod Actually, warthogs can outrun lions. They are nearly as fast, but with a lot more stamina. An ambush was probably required for this to be a success, though the first lioness may have been able to close the distance on her own.

@onlbbu You know I do believe that in some instances as some of my relatives went on the same safari at different times and they all have videos of the same lions waiting at the same place (wart hog den on the backside of a hill, so you couldn't see the den...The lions were just laying about and a few minutes after 5 vehicles arrived out pop a warthog!

What makes lions so deadly (besides all the obvious hunting attributes) is that they are almost impossible to spot when in stealth mode. Amazing.
Warthogs do have poor eyesight but excellent senses of hearing and smell. Maybe this poor fella must have not had such great sense of smell.

The 🦁 lion's coat blends perfectly with the tall grass too. Just about impossible for a warthog with poor eyesight 👓 to spot the lion in it if they're not moving.

It's amazing how the lioness color, still is perfectly camouflaged with green grass. Stealthy, coordinated, element of surprise, ambush attack. Perfect strategy executed, desired results. I love nature.

I don't mean to come off as attacking you but how does anyone apprectaie this when one gets eaten up probably after suffering a lot of pain and at the same time if the kill was missed the other two have to suffer from hunger? Nature feels wrong. Peace was never an option in the wild.

The noise of the wind and the fact that the lionesses were downwind sealed the warthog's fate. It seemed young and lacked experience. He will never get it now.

Humans put that trail there now someone like you must not know that animals will use it too. So tell me again that trail was not done by humans. The animals put it their. The warthog reminds me of everyday people walking and playing on their cell phones, and never look up.

Thanks for posting this in its entirety to show the whole build-up and the patient hunting skills of the lions - without any inappropriate music or inane comments! Those lions were downwind of a very strong breeze - the warthog had little chance of identifying their presence
Their vision is extremely poor too. In the last few minutes of its life, it actually smelled that the lion had been through there. Perhaps.
