Just a follow up, I have a 2005 Rubicon Unlimited, 243K on it, Bough new off the lot, I have also put this truck through hell and back rolled twice Snapped front axel drive shafts U-joints and it is still on the road as my daily driver. But the transmission is starting to show its mileage

Good info. I have a 2013 JK 6 speed that I bought four years ago (2019) with 42k miles, bone stock with very light use and no evidence that it had ever been off road. It now has 80k and has been on several multi week cross country road trips, with a mix of all day 80 mph interstate and some off roading thrown in up to a couple of times over Black Bear. I've had zero problems so far with the tranny or anything else (knock wood).
I've had many manual shift vehicles over the years, but this one took a little getting used to. It does everything it should do but is a little trucky with long throws and some occasion notchiness. However, it's a Jeep and not a sports car, so I have no problem with some truckiness and rough edges being a part of its personality. I've been doing some reading and "edumacating" myself on what characteristics are typical or otherwise with the 370 transmission and why it does what it does, and this video was very helpful.

Thanks for this! If mine only pops out from reverse, would a B&M aftermarket shift tower provide any real fix? In the meantime, if I use reverse I always keep force on the shifter. That "works" for me ...but the wife ain't so savvy. I was gonna buy a new shift tower for her peace of mind...but just stumbled on your awesome video. Don't wanna buy it if it won't solve the problem of jumping outta reverse.

great video with useful information. I've got this transmission in my 2005 Jeep Wrangler. its done over 200k to date and all well so far...but expecting problems so this has been helpful. I tend to put it in neutral when stopped and idling for any amount of time at traffic lights and such. this may help with reducing the amount of wear on the shifter rail pads

Hey there. I know this video is old so probably not gonna get a reply to this, but it is worth a try. I have a 2005 TJ Rubicon. In 2015 it popped out of 1st gear for the first time. Really hard pop. The problem was very limited. Couldn't get it to reproduce for my mechanic. It might happen only three or four times the first year, but it was gradually getting more frequent and the pop was getting weaker (which I figured meant the gears were getting ground down). By 2017 it was really bad and we ended up having the trans replaced with a used trans (same NSG370). The used one had 70k miles on it. My jeep had 150k miles on it when we replaced the trans. Only a month into the new trans the problem started up again in exactly the same way. First pop was really hard and didn't do it again for several months, but then it started getting more frequent and less hard. Now I am at 180k miles and it is totally sloppy again and pops out about half the time. I am considering a swap out to an AX15 or NV3550.
So! I want to know if the shifter assembly is typically replaced when a new trans is put in. Perhaps the shifter assembly wasn't changed out in 2017 when I got a replacement trans? Maybe that is why it started popping out again so quickly? Changing out the shifter assembly now probably won't help since the gears have been so ground down. Does that sound right?
Finally, do you have any opinions about doing a swap out to an AX15 or NV3550?
This video is the most helpful and informative information I have found about my problems with the NSG370. Thank you so much for posting it.

So I got an 06 rubicon with this trans, never had issues after 50k (got it with 12k in 2018) but I love the ratios compared to the older wranglers, except overdrive could be a little taller (lower number). I do love it for those reasons, but I haven’t had problems (yet).

Great video thank you has really helped me diagnose some of the issues I am having. I have a question the NSG 370 was originally designed and installed in the Dodge Viper. This must have beefed up components is there any way to get the Jeep 370 up to the same spec. The reason I ask is I am looking at a LS7 swap in my 05 Rubicon and would like to keep the 370 but make it stronger

Very curious. I have a 2018 JK and just got the transmission replaced under warranty. Was about a 4 month wait because supposedly they had to find a new manufacturer to build them. I'd really like to know if they made any updates or not with the new manufacturer. I was getting weird rattling noise in 4th, and inconsistent sycro in 3rd.

So here’s an issue that I’m just started having with this very same transmission. I have a 06 jeep wrangler that won’t shift to 2,4,and reverse. I think it’s going into 6 but basically it won’t go into any of the bottom gears on the shifter. Any idea what could be causing this? Thanks for your time.

well, I spent around $6,500 parts and labor for a rebuilt NSG370, only to find out that my problem was likely in the Shift Tower (no OEM types available). The shift tower is NOT included as part of the transmission. Also - the shift lever adapter (fastens to shift tower) is no longer available (it was a lousy design with that rubber element).

Hi im in the UK. and have just this problem, This kind of problem is not what you would expect from something I was told Merc designed, I have heard that there is an revised Gear parts listing possibly an upgrade if you know of any would you know the part numbers? I am going to rebuild it my self as when I ask locally if its not a recon unit there to fit I just get blanked, really appreciate the video between this and a couple of others I think I should be fine though a strip down guide would be handy,

Also have some rattling sounds coming from the trans when idling in neutral. Pushing in the clutch makes it go away, sometimes pumping it a few times repeatedly and it’ll go away. Always figured it was the cage but now that I’m thinking about it is this likely clutch related and not trans?

I just changed the fluid on my JK tranny. The vehicle has 23K on it. The drain plug was essentially hand tightened and the fluid level was low as others have pointed out. No service has even been done on it. I filled it with RP fluid fro manual trans and so far it seems quieter and seems to shift smoother. I have had the stiff shifting issue on my. oh yeah, had lots metal shaving in the oil and the magnetic plug was filled. I am not happy with Jeep right now. Hope this helps.

So my 09 JK manual makes a rattling noise when putting a load on the trans and after i come to a dead stop shift it into first and go, it will rattle if I accelerate to fast. Does the noise on all gears when I accelerate to fast. I was stop on a hill and started off in second and rattled like crazy when I accelerated which probably put a heavy load on the trans.. So any ideas. And no its not a heat shield rattle...Its coming from the trans.

I have a right hand drive 2008 jk 3.8 v6 6 speed that pops out of 1st gear.
I'm looking at buying the B&M 45195 Precision Sport Manual Trans Shifter Kit to try and fix the problem.
    My question is?
Is the shifter configuration from 1st to 6th and reverse exactly the same for right hand drive as left hand drive?
eg. For my right hand drive the shifter position from 1st to 6th is push forward far left for 1st gear and rear pull far right for 6th and reverse.

Great video thank you. I have a first gear only problem with my 2010 jk with 127,000 miles. Dealership mechanic said I need a new transmission but he drove it and can’t tell me if it’s any of the other possibilities you mentioned in your video so I’m pessimistic. It may be just a problem at the fork or at the shifter and if those are ok then it’s likely first gear and/or the blocking ring correct? I guess I need them to show me the condition of what is broken while it’s disassembled but would it be cheaper on me to change out the shifter first? Then if it doesn’t fix it, have a mechanic examine the fork? Can the fork be examined without dropping the transmission? Respectfully, a non-mechanic.

Hey Van, this is Brandon (the guy in the video) thanks for watching the video. There are only two reasons why 1st gear jumps, either the shifter has lost its ability to detent properly and torque from the low gear is pushing the shyncrho slider into neutral position, OR the engagement teeth for the 1st gear/ slider combo are too worn to hold position. I always recommend changing the shifter when possible, but they are expensive. Please give us a call to talk further if you like, our number is 901-279-0090.

My rear pinion bearing blew apart on me a few thousand miles ago and I did a rebuild and switched to 4.88s while in there. Ever since new I have gotten a lot of shifter rattle. It doesnt bounce around much but it emits a whole lot of noise especially in 6th under load. Recently its gotten worse and now while cruising down the highway if I have a slight incline and have to press the throttle a little extra the trans starts rattling and feels like its struggling or restricting some power. @@kevinvanhand4529 yup, same here. After making this comment, nothing really changed for better or worse. At 70k and it rattles in neutral with the clutch out just enough that it's slightly annoying to me but you would have to have it pointed out to you if you weren't listening for it. The clutch also creeks a bit depending on temp but no functional issues. I dont love the noises, but considering its been a 100% dead reliable vehicle despite my abuse, im not complaining.

Unbelievable, how there's no aftermarket parts that use brass instead of plastic... someone could make a fortune...

This is the most over complicated gear box shifter ever.
