I agree. I love his sense of humour and fairplay, especially the scandal of the Post Office Horizon debacle but then he rather shoots himself in the foot whenever Scotland and its deserved independence gets mentioned. He tends to come out with the standard British Establishment propaganda bullshit about the SNP being full of criminals who have all been arrested, etc. etc. it really is quite bizarre because, otherwise, he seems to be a perfectly normal anti establishment warrior.
@@lesleywillis6177 Private Eye was constantly being sued by Robert Maxwell and lost thousands for telling the truth about that massive 💩. When the truth came out, Private Eye should have got all that money back and an apology from Maxwell's scummy children.
My Mother turns 101 tomorrow on Jan 2nd 2025. In 1956 she became only the 2nd Woman Psychiatrist in Canada. She worked for many years in a Veterans Hospital in BC. Many WW1 patients, for some not much could be done, but she’d write Prescriptions for 2 bottles of Beer to be given on Friday or Saturday. It gave them something to look forward too and ease their troubles. They could have 1 on each day or save both for Saturday to have a drink with their pals in the Hospital.
Private Eye and HIGNFY all knew about Boris a couple of decades ago now, and weren't shy about telling anyone who asked. The whole world then got to see the man in "action" and, for reasons that go wholly over my head, there are still millions of people out there who think he should be put in charge again. There's an 8-minute video of "The Life and Lies of Boris Johnson" on TH-cam (yes, eight whole minutes about his lies and incompetence) which observes at the end that everyone who voted for him when he was at the top knew about him, they just chose to ignore the inconvenient facts. I think Hislop is the best PM the UK never had.
After this interview I actually have more respect for Ian Hislop than I already did have. I’m also very keen to watch this series he’s made. I have my own sad stories of that war with a picture of my Grandmother wearing her brother’s uniform before he left to go to war and died. Then I found his name on a memorial tablet in the middle of a roundabout in Beckenham. I also discovered that the regiment’s leader refused to come to the opening ceremony of that memorial.
We have the opposite of sanitised family history. Gramps told my uncle his scar was from getting stabbed when he was in Kingston Jamaica when he was in the Merchant Navy. Grandma later revealed it was from his appendectomy.

@holdenmcgroin3995 I said he should be. In my opinion. Tis literally in black and white for all to see. I know you're not blind, and yes, I did indeed take your bait.
Maybe Ian does not realize but the reason for the American "Saving private Ryan" scenario is that there had already been several "5 sons killed" incidents, and we stopped sending entire towns of sons together, because if a unit is wiped out, it might be better if the calamity is spread like pepper across the nation.
The Luton story was mirrored in my home town in NE Scotland. My Great grandfather and his mates had the same reception and took a gate guardian howitzer from its place and dragged it down the river and threw it in!
On the 100th anniversary of the Battle of Jutland I went to Plymouth to put a cross on the naval memorial in honour of my Grandmother’s first husband, William Martin, who was killed on the battlecruser HMS Lion (one that didn’t blow up!). On another side of the memorial an old lady was placing two bunches of roses and she asked me why I was there. After I explained she said she was honouring her two uncles, who were also killed at Jutland on different battlecrusers that both blew up. She said that her father, who was too young to fight in WWI, told her that his mother received the two telegrams telling her of their deaths within 90 minutes of each other and she was never the same again!
If I had a relative that did as Ian Hislop says, there'd be a bottle of beer on his grave every Sunday. I still remember the old ladies going to the spiritualists church in our suburb. They must have had loved ones lost in WW2.
Interestingly, as someone that was obsessed with learning about the Great War when I was living in the UK in the Eighties, in Australia, where I've lived since 1993, they DO routinely study World War One at secondary school as part of their syllabus. At Oakham School, in Rutland, where I spent six years, the closest we got to WW1 was the French Revolution and Napoleon. We didn't even get to Victorian Britain.

I doubt that he would accept a Knighthood whilst working. He would view it as a sell out to the establishment.
