For all jazz lovers....oldies like this deep paean to the bitter sweetness of fall makes you wistful for New York...just painfully GORGEOUS!!!: Early Autumn
I just --for the life of me-- do NOT UNDERSTAND why some people have to compare one musician to another. They each will have their own style which appeals to one person and not another. but that does not make one BETTER than the other. "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". Remember and stop making stupid, needless comparisons. There's room for all styles.
Two of THE greatest big band charts of ALL time by one of the swinginest bands that ever lived! I will never tire of hearing any and every version of 4Bros done well but of course it is hard to not like the originals best.
yea woody was not too well here and soon to be gone like the rest of us but oh boy what a contribution to our music.he stands alongside basie ellington and Kenton you name em.woody is a legend.r.i.p great man.
God bless them all. What great, great joy their creations have brought me. Stan Kenton even played a request for me. Such thrilling sounds from them...
You got THAT right! I was at the '46 Carnegie concert when they were the greatest and debuted "Ebony Concerto" and played the Ralph Burns repertoire. Whatta night. I'd just turned 15 and my Dad and I were head-scraping top balcony but I'll never forget it.
Ah, poor Woody. He was 71 y/o here and not sounding the way he used to sound. he was ill and he would be gone in 3 years - in 1987, but he's up there putting out and the band sound fine!
He's actually on stage (John Adams) but behind a pole from this camera angle. Kinda' like Pepper Adams the bari player for years with Thad Jones' band at the Village Vangaurd in NYC. Pepper had an obscured spot seated behind a pole, depending on where you sat in the audience. A small place, probably not originally designed with a big band in mind. I never saw anyone wearing mouse ears at the Vangaurd. There were probably rats nearby, but DL has more than their fair share of rats too.
So grateful to have come of age when all these greats were still active and music was written and played by highly skilled musicians. Feel sorry for later generations and the guitar infested drivel they only know.
That's the one and only Woody Herman and his big band. That should be identified in the title, the description or the tags; it's important, gals & guys.
THE MUSIC IS SO GOOD AND MELLOW THAT PEOPLE CAN ACTUALLY DANCE ALL SNUGGLED UP IN EACH OTHERS' ARMS. DO PEOPLE STILL SLOW DANCE TODAY? I LOVED MAKING LOVE TO MY HUSBAND ON THE DANCE FLOOR WHILE WE WERE WHISPERING SWEET WORDS TO EACH OTHERS' EARS AND KISSING ON EACH OTHERS' NECKS. BRING BACK THOSE GOOD NIGHTS WITH THEIR GREAT MUSIC! SYLVIA - FL 9/13/2019
Beautiful sentiment Sylvia. No slow dancing i find anywhere. Sad this beautiful music is no longer broadcast on any radio. A real pleasure reading your post!!! 🥰
Getz told G. H. W. Bush on a White House vid that they were originally called The Four Mother(s) F .........s! Use your imagination to fill in the blank. Lol, No lie.
I'd like to say it is interesting to hear the comments of young listeners comparing say... Coletrane with Getz. But it's not. It is straight ahead ignorant. Trane himself said, "We'd all play like Stan if we could. " Put another way, there would have been no Ali if there hadn't first been Joe Louis. No Freddie Hubbard had there not first been Lee Morgan.
Did you audition for this band and get rejected based on race? If so, you can sue them. I dont care about the racial composition of the band. I only care about the sound of the music.
"Early Autumn" is truly one of the most beautiful songs ever written.
Hands down!
For all jazz lovers....oldies like this deep paean to the bitter sweetness of fall makes you wistful for New York...just painfully GORGEOUS!!!: Early Autumn
It makes me wistful for the days when they were still making music like this.
Beautifully stated! Pleasure to read. 🥰

I echo that!
CHARLES LILES; I DO BELIEVE I SAID THOSE EXACT WORDS ON ANOTHER ALBUM (MAYBE ON AN OSCAR PETERSON ALBUM). SYLVIA - FL 9/13/2019
Comparisons are not stupid.
Comparisons are necessary to achieve the truth.
Puts SUCH a smile on my face hearing this jump!! Oh, THERE'S Early Autumn! Beautiful!!!
I loved Woody; brought tears to my eyes..
One of the most beautiful ballads ever.
So great hearing my old friend and teacher Dave Reickenberg play!
RIP, Woody! And thanks for all the great music over the decades!
That bass man is just great. The whole band including the sound engineer is terrific. What a joy to hear this beautiful music played by professionals.

I will never tire of hearing any and every version of 4Bros done well but of course it is hard to not like the originals best.
Jerry Pinter is my current teacher! Great guy and an amazing player!

I was just 11yrs old my first hearing of big
band jazz, on record(78) and it has never left me for the remaining 77 yrs.

I saw Woody around the same time when he stopped by a few of the jazz clubs in my neighborhood around the same time and he looked okay.
Моему любимому Герману здесь уже много лет, играет неважно, но какое очарование! Всю жизнь учусь у него бигбэндовому джазу. Эдуард
I have this on my MP3, play it all the time, great arrangement.

Could not agree more and sure you speak for many around the world.
Me Too
Wish live music like this still happened on that stage....which no longer exists... :(
Fantastic take on the original four! Love it always!
Two great numbers
cool sounds,it's so good!
Woody Herman sure made some of the greatest Big Band tunes!
Kay Bueno. Thank you.
Wow wow wow is all

ああ、懐かしい。古き良きアメリカ
The great Roger Ingram on lead trumpet!
Sooooo tight, man.
Fantastic listening
Powerful swing by one of the best big band !
Who?
When?
Where?
And why didn't i learn to play saxophone?
What year was this. Carnation plaza at Disneyland. I might have been there.
That's the one and only Woody Herman and his big band. That should be identified in the title, the description or the tags; it's important, gals & guys.
Disneyland... at Carnation Gardens, which by the way was recently removed.
HISTÓRICO WOODY CON SU ORQUESTA!!

Mike told me he didn't think he is related to Nick, but if he was it could possibly be a distant relation.
Anyone know who the drummer is?
Ya - I think I agree with you!
Woody ist König!
Was this filmed at Disneyland or a Disney cruise ship? Just curious...great clip < : * )
who is the tenor guy with glasses? I love his sound.
hermosisima musica...escalofrios !!
Is the bari player Brignola Jr.?
It is very good. The only thing his ensemble needed was one additional drummer on a kit that syncopated
An ageless sound from the very best big band ! Woody, you are missed !
This is "Four brothers". Not "Early autumn".
They play Early Autumn right after Four Brothers
Where is Jim Carroll
Magic Mountain, California?
Getz told G. H. W. Bush on a White House vid that they were originally called The Four Mother(s) F .........s! Use your imagination to fill in the blank. Lol, No lie.
Carnation Plaza, Disneyland
Woody herman thought that it was very hilarious!
Woody herman was crying sadly at Disneyland!
Pretty sure that's John Adams on bass, 1984 summertime at Disneyland.
I just noticed who you are! Fantastic! I'm a fan. By the way, who was the drummer here?
Is the bari sax player related to nick brignola
I worked with Mike a bunch back in the day, asked him the same question, he said no.
Much talent there. I would say to the recording engineer - unplug the kick drum mic, and use an acoustic bass.
Yeah, the bass drum and hi-hat mic are a little hot but it's a live recording for crying out loud. Oh and that IS an acoustic bass.
I'd like to say it is interesting to hear the comments of young listeners comparing say... Coletrane with Getz. But it's not. It is straight ahead ignorant. Trane himself said, "We'd all play like Stan if we could. "
Put another way, there would have been no Ali if there hadn't first been Joe Louis. No Freddie Hubbard had there not first been Lee Morgan.
And no Lee Morgan had there not been Clifford Brown.
BRAVISSIMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
@timopartanen Getz was "OK"? Oh.
why is the bass player off stage?
The I.R.S. hounded Woody to death because his manager embezzled all the bands money including the I.R.S.tax deductions ,bastards !
Mike Brignola...any relation to Nick Brignola?
No.

Four white brothers.
die band ist immer noch, oder wieder gut aber er sollt's halt lassen und nicht meinen man akzeptiert seine Präsentation, weil er früher gut war!
Ripper sounds better the garbage ya get now a days.
No black people in that band. What a bad period for them. Shame on the conductor
Did you audition for this band and get rejected based on race? If so, you can sue them. I dont care about the racial composition of the band. I only care about the sound of the music.
Oh FFS
Don't be ridiculous!
