I've been a film collector for over 40 years. Started with Betamax, VHS, DVD, now Blu ray. Spending loads and loads of money. I decided a couple of years ago not to upgrade to 4K, due to my blu ray collection being over 3,000 films. So buy a 4K player and play your blu rays on, and the quality a bit better. I now don't buy new releases right away, I wait 3 months and save a 3rd on the price. I would never ever buy digital where it could be taken away from me. Physical media will always be for me.
You like me. Have upgraded time and again. Imagine all that money again and again. Crazy isn’t it really. Waiting on sales is the way forward for me I think. Not on everything. But some stuff for sure.
@happydogg312 I only buy Blu rays, believe or not there's not a great difference between the both, infact some blu rays have a better transfer than 4K. Good luck in building your collection, i enjoy the hunt finding films that are OOP that's all part of thr fun.
You are definitely not alone. I don't consider our dives to be errors but a learning experience. Now we're not just blind buying 4k movies, just buying the ones that are worth it to us. Great topic. Thank you
I'm buying less physical media simply because there are fewer films being made that I enjoy enough to warrant buying. As for 4K vs. Blu-ray, I always go for the 4K version that also has the Blu-ray version with it. If it is 4K only then I keep my old Blu-ray version as well. Never bought Steelbooks as I thought they were a cash grab for the sake of some bling.
Sorry is that a statement ? A question ? A rhetorical question ? I’m going to assume you’re asking me if those films are lazily made. Obviously not every film is. But most are yes. The writing is a lot worse and treats its audience like they are idiots. ( Alien Romulus. Trap . Beekeeper , to name a small few ). Most films are now made my committee. The art of movie making has been lost
I own “The Exorcist” on DVD, bluray and 4K. But I prefer the 1997 DVD because it has the correct color timing and no effects alterations. Same with “The Ninth Gate”. The color timing on the DVD is better than the bluray. New doesn’t always mean better.
One of the issues is that all movies are initially converted into 2k masters for cinema release, hence a substantial amount of 4k discs are upscaled from these 2k versions. Not many films are shot in 4k or higher and then mastered into a 4k releases.
When done right, 4K Blu-ray can be extraordinary like no other. But a little more often than not, the difference between Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray is pretty minimal at best, even with HDR the difference isn’t as massive as say the jump from VHS to DVD. Plus it doesn’t help that 4K Blu-ray is absurdly expensive (especially the boutique label releases from the likes of Arrow or Shout Factory or examples) lately which only further disinterests consumers. Also, the general quality control on 4K discs is terrible, you'll never know if your disc will function perfectly or will freeze up halfway through the movie, even on the highly rated Panasonic UB820. And lastly, I think both Atmos and DTS:X are at best overhyped and at worst generally underwhelming. I honestly don’t think I see myself buying 4K discs much going forward. If I was to stay in the physical media game, I would for the most part go back to standard Blu-ray as it is just as efficient as 4K Blu-ray and is cheaper most of the time.
I now only buy 4Ks if i really really like the movie. Especially for animations. Animations seem to "pop" in 4K. However, I am perfectly fine with the Blu-ray in most cases.
For me, I won't upgrade animated movies from bluray to 4K. Not saying anything bad about the 4Ks. I just don't see the gain in it as the BDs look amazing. Especially the Pixar titles. Now, if I don't already own them on BD, I will get the 4K.
I followed the same path that you did... VHS's then DVD's then blu-ray's and not right away but I did jump into 4K's with a new tv and 4K player and then I dived right into 4K movie purchases. Like you and many others we end up buying too many 4K's, but I do have a nice physical media collection. I am going to cut back this year but I figure no sense having regrets, and there's nothing wrong with having a good collection and enjoying what you have
This is true. Rather than saying I have regrets. ( as I don’t really believe in regrets ) this discussion is more an exploration of my mind and thinking and the absurdity of it all. We pour so much time effort and money into something that really doesn’t matter in the grand schemes
It’s about being selective isn’t it. For me I think I should get 4K when I feel needed and Blu-ray when not. But it’s the steelbook thing I would need to get past for that
I own about 100 DVD’s, 200 Blu Ray’s and 15 4k’s. Having grown up with VHS I genuinely feel standard 1080p blu ray is the way to go as a whole - price vs quality. The majority of the 4k’s I own are Sci Fi movies that I love with mint transfers. T1, The Matrix, Dune, Alien etc.
Thanks for making this video. Feels liberating to me. I never got into 4K only because I use a projector (and Blu-Ray player) and didn’t want to have the big cost of the upgrade. Plus, I already have thousands of DVDs and Blu-rays. I have a few 4K discs, either because that was the only way the Blu-ray came out, or I made a mistake. Someday, maybe I will upgrade my equipment, but likely not. I feel I can enjoy the movies at the Blu-ray quality level.
You totally can. I got a new 4K Steelbook upgrade the other day. For a film I’ve not seen In a while. And had on Blu-ray. And I really enjoy the film. But whilst watching I seriously said to myself. I would have enjoyed this just as much watching my Blu-ray. So why did I buy it. And I honestly think it was more solely because of the steelbook ( as an afterthought this is ) Seriously. There’s nothing wrong with Blu-ray. Stick with it unless no other option 👍
I completely agree about not purchasing digital films and paying for something tangible that you can own and hold. I hate the world we’re in of ongoing subscriptions and payments which is something I’ve always tried to avoid where humanly possible.
Shame you don’t upgrade to a surround sound setup!! I upgraded to a Sonos Dolby Atmos system and had no idea how much I was missing!! Puts a smile on my face every time I fire up a 4K movie!! Streaming is getting better and better every year but the most annoying thing about streaming……the audio!! If we are lazy and just watching a movie on Netflix at home while owning that same movie on 4K….we can only make it 20 mins into a movie before I get up….put that same movie into the 4K player and instantly notice that we can now hear all the dialogue over the music!!! Huge difference!!
Yeah I’ve never been a sound guy 🤷🏻♂️ what can I say. I’ve considered it. But honestly. Don’t want the expense. Plus I am mindful of my neighbours ( as attached house ) and wouldn’t want it interfering with them
First video of yours I have seen. I really enjoyed it, nice and cosey chat. Blu Rays are indeed extremely affordable right now, Dvds even more so, unless it's an extremely rare title or course. I find myself loving all of them to be honest with you. For me, it comes down to the title in question. Some things just look better in 4k, and other times, they look better on blu ray or even DVD. Some titles look good on all three can give you a unique experience depending on which one you pick. I understand your perspective on digital entertainment, but most people aren't into collecting or even owning anything they view. Mostly about convenience for them. Edit: Agree with you on some films getting 4k, some really do not need it, cinematic, colorful films make sense, but a more toned down film really doesn't need it, and more gritty films like you also said.
👋 thank your for popping in. Watching and especially taking the time to comment. I think the best way to be is to pick and choose between the formats. And ask ourselves what one gives over the other and if that’s required.
My criteria for 4k for catalogue movies, is that if i already have the bluray (of a 4k scan) and the pq is not being held back by the Blu-ray format then i won't update. Examples i have are 12 Monkeys and Silent Running. Both 4k scans but def not pushing the boundaries of bluray. In fact I've seen the 4k of Silent Running on my setup and it was very very grainey!
I think buying 4K releases is not warranted unless you have the very best of TV's first, OLED, Mini-LED etc ... a $400 65" 4K tv and a $1500 65" 4K OLED TV will yield night and day differences. I see a ton of people including TH-cam reviewers spend a fortune on software and play it on sub par hardware.
This was a great video. Been really enjoying the output on the channel, just shouted you out in my latest video. Its great seeing other's look at collecting from a different light and pull away from the fomo aspect and the constant need to upgrade.
Yes I buy the movie I want in my collection not every movie just bcuz it’s in 4k. You are absolutely correct. And I primarily buy second hand but it all adds up but it’s cheaper than retail. I like packaging but what is really important is just the movie cheers
I probably caught this video at the right time as I picked up my first 4k the other day and did get a bit of the bug. Certainly going to slow down and take my time. I do however need a new TV so will need to look into that. I have heard that 4k sometimes detracts from movies e.g. Titanic and CGI that can be seen much clearer. It does feel a bit like you would think playing GTA Vice City on an HD tv would be better but the CRT is so much better to play vice city on. Cheers for the video and looking forward to more like it. All the best.
Sometimes yeah. It does distract. All I can say is do your homework on releases. Look at vids and what folk say. And be picky. Not every film needs it.
The question should be do you want films to look mind blowing fantastic? surely you want filmmakers intentions. I was never satisfied with blu rays. High contrast levels and luminous colours were not for me. Granted alot of blu rays looked good and some still hold up really well even compared to the 4k but 4k with dolby vision hdr is where it ends for me. Alot of People have barely upgraded to blu ray, DVD still carries the torch so anything beyond 4k now is looking less likely, there was rumours of 8k but realistically isn't this just going to be targeted at people who can just say that they want the latest of tech despite not really knowing that realistically you can't tell the difference between the look of 4k and 8k.. we're coming to the end of the road I feel and blu rays and 4ks or whatever you decide to watch just enjoy it while it lasts. Eventually they will stop selling 4k tvs, and if other companies decide to stop manufacturing players such as LG just very recently then we've just got to keep hold of what we have and make the most of it . Sometimes we overthink it and we should just enjoy it, do 4ks look better than dvds, yes!. Do they look better than the blurays. Yes! Even if some are by a small margin. We have the added HDR and for that reason it's always going to be worth the upgrade, but if you are on a budget and thr cost is significantly less on blu rays, it's a no brainer.. you must cut your cloth accordingly and make the best decision for you personally.. the other question should be, what do you want from your viewing experience at home?. Alot of the latest tvs have all the bells and whistles that experts always advise you should turn off.. again this is because of filmmakers intentions. All the smooth motion and eye care settings. DNR and AI enhancing settings look terrible. So too is HDR tone mapping. My advise is get the best tv that displays excellent black levels. Such as any LG OLED from 2019+ a good player like a Panasonic ub820 with dolby vision and just have the best of everything. Dvd's, blu rays look great upscaled and if you choose to buy a few of your favourite films on 4k then surely life is good?
@Music.Movies.67 This is simply not true. Maybe to your eyes this is how it looks, otherwise your setup is completely off, ive not seen washed out colours since vhs and dvd, even blu rays are stable, maybe not accurate but not washed out . What's your setup, if you don't mind me asking?
VHS. Over 2 million films and TV shows on the format. DVD. About 300k. 1080p Bluray. About 90k. 4k Bluray. About 1.2k. For each new format less and less gets released. Dvd seems the logical choice.
Great conversation👍🏾 thank you for telling us your truth , me, myself, am all about DVDs and Blue rays. Don't get me wrong, I've been tempted to go down that 4K rabbit hole for a long time now, but the movies are getting more expensive, and some of the transfers are looking too much like AI Creepy!😅 A lot of 4K guys hate on Blu-ray, guys, but thank you for keeping it real👊🏽❤️🇨🇦🔥
Thank you for watching and commenting. We all Collect what we collect. Whether it be dvd. Blu-ray 4K. Why people look down on others because of their format is beyond me. We’re all in it together and collecting for the same reasons - we love film ! Admittedly I don’t pick up dvd as much as I once did. But still do in certain circumstances. And still have a load I won’t get rid off. I think the more and more 4K is produced. The more crappy AI versions we will see. It must be far cheaper to produce that way for them.
I collect DVD, bluray and 4K. There are some 4Ks in my collection that are absolutely stunning. For example, MAD MAX 2, THE SHINING, FURIOSA, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE FALLOUT and JAWS 2. I buy 4K selectively and I will go for the bluray if I'm not expecting to see a huge difference. If a film was made using IMAX (or similar) camera then I will always get the 4K. TOP GUN MAVERICK is absolutely stunning in 4K as are parts of the Christopher Nolan Batman films.
@@ajsmovieplace I thought it looked fantastic. I also thought the four original Superman films looked great on 4K. I think most people think the fourth film has the best picture quality, and I tend to agree, but they all look really good.
I blows my mind seeing all these collectors and so many of them don’t even have a good sound system. Good audio is soooo important to the experience, yet they review movies and don’t even mention the sound! Nice video but you’re missing out. Imagine going to the theater and the sound is garbage. It would be a bad experience.
Totally get what you’re saying. And historically I have had a surround sound system and didn’t really care for it. I don’t need to have noise all around me. Not coming from different speakers. I don’t like noise at the best of times. And certainly my don’t want to watch a film with a sound level that a can feel vibrating through the room. That does nothing for me at all. Also generally. Regardless of sound most cinema experiences are bad because of all the scumbags around you who couldn’t give a toss for anyone else in the screening.
At somepoint someone at Shout Factory decided, "nope, no more importing new obscure titles. We are releasing all of our archive titles on 4K." That's when I decided to abandon ship. Blu-ray is good enough for me. 4K is a sheer and blatant price gouging.
Hi AJ i feel i am at a point where I am over the constant upgrading cycle having 2 Systems a Panasonic Plasma and Optoma Projector is where I stop. feeling no desire upgrade either . HDR and Dolby Atmos are just not big enough reasons for me. Also agree on Comedy 4K releases due not see the sense in either the Seinfeld Or Friends sets but each to their own. Regards Trevor
What is that 4K friends set £200 ? I don’t mind friends. Have it on Blu-ray. Cost me £30 🤷🏻♂️. Not watched yet though 😂. I’m Not a sound person. So the whole Dolby Atmos isn’t a selling point for me. I thought enhanced picture was. But I’m not so sure now. I think for me it’s about being more picky
Honestly no. It’s whatever I fancy watching to be honest. At the moment I am watching through the tv show elementary. ( DVDs ) recent watched Congo ( Blu-ray ) and Rise and Dawn planet of apes ( 4K ). So it is very much a mix up formats
I don't regret getting into 4K. I do agree with many of your points. So many titles do not need an upgrade. Older films, yes. Some of the restorations they are doing are phenomenal! I will admit that when I died into 4K, I wanted everything. But over time, I started seeing that some didn't need it and I started to be more selective. But I have seen some 4Ks that are miles ahead of the bluray. A Few Good Men and War of the Worlds (Tom Cruise) come to mind. I feel same way with comedies. Just depends on how good my current copy is. Great example would be Galaxy Quest. I had the DVD for years and looked like crap. Was so happy to upgrade it.
I agree. There are some lovely restorations out there ( Jaws , The Thing ) but the. We are given a lot of dross in pic quality ( planes trains and automobiles. Weird science ). And now we’re at a point where these restorations aren’t done out of love. They are done for profit and we have the AI interference stating. For a quick finish
I have a 3d plasma tv and have been building a 3d blu ray collection, but I'm not buying everything in sight. I don't have a 4k player (yet) but i have picked up some 4k movies mainly in anticipation of picking up a 4k tv at some point. I have a ps4 pro with a vr headset that will enable me to continue to watch 3d movies even if the tv dies on me down the track and i am still picking up dvds where special collector editions come up in charity shops. So basically i haven't ruled out any one medium in favour of another I'm just trying to be very selective about what i pick up in what version..... So maybe there is no one right solution its just a case of taking each film you want and deciding how best to retain a collection copy.
Some movies definitely deserve a 4K release and an upgrade, especially if the dvd/blu ray isn’t the best transfer. However FAR too many movies nowadays get a 4K and it really leaves you scratching your head asking, ‘who asked for this?’ 😂 I’m glad I’m not a huge collector AJ, because you’re right, a lot of it unfortunately is a waste of money
Hi Mike 👋. Yeah it’s time to be more selective. But yeah I mean Sharknaodo has a 4K in Germany ( I do have it 😂🤦🏻🤷🏻♂️). Why was that even looked at as an option for 4K 🤷🏻♂️
Its been an uphill battle for me. When i started in my journey of building a home theater i knew nothing about things like "hdr" and the difference between 4k and blu ray as formats. But also learning how each tv type is different was a learning curve. If you can afford everything and are okay with learning the technical lingo to learn all of this then i dont see the problem. Because i get to watch my favorite movies that mean something to me in the best quality at home. Ive always took good care of my stuff so it will be a permanent purchase. I only have to buy it once. When i was younger i never cared about owning any movies because i knew it could be replaced. But now its not so easy. Especially with how expensive everything is now.
I love classic movies and tv shows and I’ve upgraded two shows from from dvd to blu ray (smileys people & Night Gallery) that said, once I buy something, I almost never upgrade unless there are amazing extras or something like that. Getting into 4K soon, but I’m not sure how many I will buy as I have most of the films I want to watch already.
I never usually bother if it's a new film as its most are filmed in the 4K. Blurays are nearly half the price. Older films, though, look amazing. Think the first 4k i ever bought was My Fair Lady, and the look blew me away. I dont bother with digital either
Hey mate, this brings back memories.I started with a beta max, vhs, dvd, and blu ray ,but I've not dipped my toes into 4k . I'm over the upgrading and stopped at Blu ray.I never bought any Digital stuff and never will.My first blu ray player was the Playstation 3 lol.
I switched from standard releases to steelbooks but the expense is obviously more i bought a lot of better bluray steels and put the 4k movie in them but cost and space is becoming an issue so this year i have a goal of 6 titles max. I also have some boxsets and standard blurays i will force myself to sell for the space..i refuse to build more shelving etc for them. Can you imagine committing to such a restriction ?
Yes and no. I mean I have a room dedicated to my collecting. A year ago my room was about 1/3 larger than now. So I have reduced space. Regardless of the volume of space we have inevitably that space runs out over time. So yeah there is a restriction. But just much larger than most I guess. As I collect collectables and figures also. Capacity is full with those. But I still pick up on occasion. I couldn’t imagine the restriction of 1 or 2 book cases though. But I recall when it was just that for me
I totally agree. I think the whole packaging thing has a lot of people ( me included ) picking up a wealth of films that aren’t required in 4K. But we’re blinded by the steelbook and art
When I do buy a 4k I do try and think is it value for money, is the picture quality that much better than blu ray? I'm not gonna pay for a 4kmovie I've seen 50 times before unless otherwise
Yeah I think that’s a problem. Not doing homework on the release first. But when it’s a new release steelbook or collectors set. A lot of times you can’t wait for that as FOMO kicks in and you don’t want to miss out on that item ( I talk about that this Saturday - pre ordering and the FOMO link )
I used to collect DVD's when they first came out. I will never collect physical media again. A waste of money and space in my house. Everything digital for me. (I know the quality isn't as good as 4K discs) BUT! 8K - 16K Digital will be the norm within the next 5 - 10 years which will easily equal & surpass the picture quality 4K discs. I really respect collectors of anything. From VHS to vinyl to shoes to cars. But I see the future and the future is definitely 1000's of 4K - 8K movies & TV series that you start watching in seconds across all your devices & screens.
I think you know my thoughts on this AJ, it’s a case of OCD with me, I don’t mix formats and there was no way I was starting a collection over again from scratch, I’ve done it twice before, plus my son has a 4K set up and I struggle to see a significant improvement 🧐 I think this video will question a few peoples choices 👍 take care mate👍😃👍
I collected for the sake of collecting for a long time when I had disposable income, now I limit it strictly to films/ tv that I love and want to watch over and over again , most recently that’s Cobra Kai, poor things, D&W and the substance when It eventually gets a physical release, everything else I’ll stream or rent digitally
And this is why I quit physical in 2010. I couldn’t see myself purchasing the same movies over and over again. So I switched to digital, and I have enjoyed free 4K upgrades for years now. I personally have no need for physical copies. I enjoy being able to enjoy my movies whenever and wherever. I now always have all my movies in my pocket. And many TV’s have integrated airplay today. So when gathered with friends or family, I always have a movie to watch with them. And it has been a giant reales of my previous collector sickness. And my wallet is no longer constant bleeding.
I wonder if I will ever give up entirely. I honestly can’t see it. But then If a year ago someone said I would be thinking the way I do now I wouldn’t have believed it. Time and events have a way of changing us and our outlook
I havent ever had a massive collection, but i have always had my favourite films in the different formats over the years. However, I have a home theatre set up now with 4k TV and player. I have upgraded all my films i love to 4k and purchased new titles. I have an Apple TV 4K and also purchase titles when they are around £3-5. I dont get not buying digital apart from the upgrade in visual and audio quality when owning in physical media format. I purchased Scarface through ITunes back in 2007 and it is still in my digital library as so are all my other titles. The other added bonus to digital on Apple is if it’s purchased in 1080p it will get upgraded to 4k HDR for free, so no need to purchase again. Ok, it’s not the full 4k experience, but i can take my films anywhere with me and play them on friends and families TV’s as well. However, i still prefer physical media simply for the quality.
@ Yes, i get that. I dont go away and want to watch tv as my main activity. Some stuff i buy on Apple digitally which I can’t warrant spending 4K prices on. Also, i dont want 4ks and blurays taking up space for titles which aren’t demo or favourite worthy. For example, i buy a Christmas film every Christmas; last year i purchased Bad Santa. There’s no way I’m going to buy this on 4k or Blu-ray, plus when i was at my brothers for Christmas, we all watched it. For me, this is one scenario i buy digitally, it’s just convenient.
Apologies. Not sure if you watched the entirety of my thoughts ( I wouldn’t blame anyone who didn’t I know how it works. ) But asking that question would signify you didn’t and / or completely missed the point of the discussion. But please do enlighten as to why people wouldn’t see much of a difference on a 65” tv like you say
Hi also upgraded to a 4K TV and player the same time as you and I don’t buy every release I want on 4K. In the beginning I did buy a few 4K’s that were on offer to build my collection but now I only buy the movies that I really like and want on 4K, Alien, Aliens, The Matrix Trilogy for example. For everything else, I buy on blu-ray and sometimes wait a few weeks/months until they’re reduced which doesn’t take long like you said.
Given your extensive collection it would be well worth investing in a basic sound surround set up. IE A Dennon AVR, (£500) Two pairs of Dali Oberon 1 speakers(£800 rrp) +a small Rel sub (Zero rrp 450 sometimes on offer at 350) It would really enhance your whole viewing experience
Not a bad price. If I do consider it it will be 6 months down the line. Just simply because I don’t want to break away from my target of saving and not spending. I want to make that more of a habitual thing before any big buys
@@ajsmovieplace Yes as I typed I heard the rest of your vlog explaining that. We have to preplan & prioritise bigger purchases too. We'd like a new TV. & "definitely need a new Sofa The TV we are watching is a fairly budget 40" we bought at a rental property back in 2016. The Sofa 2009. Likely they will both be purchased on interest free rather than have to pay upfront as sofa £1500 ish & a Sony 55" nearly £700. Could get a cheaper TV but extensive research suggests they're are best quality LCD panel these days. Dont want/need OLED. Agree with your cost of living comments. Most of us just don't have the disposable income we used to have so have to be more selective on cd /blu ray purchases, especially with prices rising.
Footnote :actually don't need to spend anywhere near £400 on the rear speakers. A budget pair would be fine for rear sound effects. Forgot to mention our centre speaker was an end of line from Richer Sounds last January for £49
@andrewbrazier9664 yeah this is true. I do appreciate we all have varying degree of income and what we can spend. I am ( currently ) in. Fortunate enough position that I could pretty much pick up all I was tempted by. And this is on top of mine and the wife’s joint savings and holiday savings. But I now feel Foolish for spending the money I have on this stuff. I feel really Stupid. If I could go back and give my 16 year old self a reality slap I would. But I suppose better late than never. I am now asking if my buying has been driven by poor mental health ( and have a video planned on that )
I have to say, I am presently in the same boat as yourself. I spent a lot of my money on DVDs and then to Blu Ray. I stopped buying them when streaming and kids came along. Then covid hit. I started collecting Vinyl records again. Last week I noticed The Searchers was released on 4K. Saw a few videos about it. Ordered the movie and was floored by how good it is. So I have made a conscience decision to myself. I am only going to get the top 15 4K releases that I need. Lawrence of Arabia- etc. That should help keep me under control. For now at least 😅
I do upgrade to 4k but its very minimal. Im very selective on what i do upgrade. Got to be favourites, older movies and if i feel like the bluray wasnt good enough( usually the first blurays that came out ) Im still totally happy with bluray pq. I also just bought a new sony tv and the upscaling is fantastic.
tnx for the insight mate, yes I have been collecting but I'm collecting both blu ray and 4k, I c wat people say about the transfers and make my decision, it's the action and horror I like in 4k for the deeper blacks.. for example wen most reviewers saud the film Heat was too dark in 4k I just picked up the blu ray version...
I just slowed down on my 4K buying one because I have cash issues and the other if I have a movie on Blu-ray already I’m not gonna upgrade it and waste money
Over time my collecting habits have changed and I think a big reason for that change is the price of physical media has gotten so high these days especially 4K. Unless it is a movie I love and looks great on 4K I won't buy it on physical media. When the prices were cheaper I would buy what I call marginal movies that I did like but frankly may never get around to watching again? I don't care if a movie looks great on 4K if I don't love it and will never watch it again. So making sure I love a movie and will watch it again has become a criteria for me now when in the past prices where cheap I would buy lots of discs. I felt there was a big jump in video quality going from DVD to Blu Ray but not as much going from Blu Ray to 4K if you have a 4K TV that does a good job of upscaling Blu Ray to 4K. Most of those Blu Rays look damn good. That said there is a definite difference in a well done 4K Disc but is it a must have for most people watching a movie? I think not. Personally my new disc purchases are in 4K but like I said previously I am now very selective in what I buy. I did upgrade from Blu Ray to 4K my top 25 favorite movies of all-time but for most of my collection the Blu Ray copy I have is more than good enough. I have a hard time watching DVD's these days. Even with my Sony TV which is known for upscaling lower quality content the best the video quality of and upscaled DVD to 4K just doesn't compare to watching the same movie on a Blu Ray disc upscaled to 4K. I had already upgraded my favorite movies from DVD to Blu Ray a long time ago when the prices where relatively cheap compared to prices today.
Interesting thoughts, and of course Kermit never went 4K and I think he gets a lot more well priced items for this reason... as a steelbook collector I don't really have a choice as I'd have to get the 4K for the steelbook, anyway, as it's 'pretty rare' to get a Blu-ray steelbook these days... the reason steelbooks often have the 4K AND Blu-ray in even if the Amaray only has the 4K disc.
He certainly does. I myself have bought steelbooks and collectors sets primarily over past few years. But now questioning my thought process over that. ( my video this coming Saturday delves a bit more into that. ) ☝️. I’m Just working through changes I’m having with how I perceive collecting after nigh on 40 years of doing it.
@@ajsmovieplace I will look forward to your video, as always, especially as I may *want* to keep getting 'the best' (despite some serios 'rip off CE sets that don't get a 'basic' release... well at least not for ages) but I'm facing an uncertain financial future due to ill health so really have to examine where my priorities lie... there may be a lot fewer haul videos in my future by necessity and I'd rather be fully in control and know my priorities _before_ that day (potentially) arrives.
It's very important before collecting 4ks to research. Not all 4k players and tvs support HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Even some 4k discs are just SDR. The resolution upgrade is minimal. However, dolby visions and HDR10 is where the differences are found. All that said i do agree that not everything needs to be upgraded. And i personally dont lile the steelbook gimmick. Its pricing is beyond reasonable
I’ve slowed down my purchases if it’s a film I really enjoyed and I know I’ll rewatch it often I’ll buy the 4K if it benefits. If not I’m fine with the blu ray. I’ve also gotten rid of a lot of the older films I had on dvd that I didn’t watch regularly anymore and only kept the out of print titles or ones I plan on upgrading.
For some older films some of the new remasters are far far superior to the blu rays. That being said for most new films the difference is much much less, it’s mostly HDR that’s the difference and Blu Ray is clearly still great value and very very good. For me the biggest difference is audio(if you have 5.1.2 or better) and now that they seem to be intentionally keeping the Atmos tracks for the 4k discs when they always used to out them on the blu ray as well! So unless you have an Atmos set up then the blu ray may often be the better option and you wouldn’t notice unless viewed side by side. I will keep a Blu ray over a 4k if I prefer it. The recent release of the Terminator/Aliems being an example. From what I’ve heard I’ll likely keep my Kill Bill blu’s and not upgrade them either but I would for Jackie Brown.
And don't forget Aquaman look great on Blu-ray anyway. I question why I buy 4ks anyway. I can't see much of a difference and for the price is it worth it
Yeah if you’re questioning the difference. That’s not good if you’re going with the 4K over the Blu-ray. But tge 4K is the option with the better packaging ( steelbooks., collectors sets ) it’s all a psychological mind game
I remain unconvinced of the quality of 4k compared to blu-ray. For Christmas I was gifted Dune part 2 and Avatar The way of water on 4k simply because of the visuals but I made sure they were on offer before asking for them. Animation on 4k is unnecessary, most dramas on 4k are overkill. For big budget fantasy/SF movies fair enough but the quality difference from dvd to blu-ray is greater than blu-ray to 4k. 4k is good for some media but too much for others. Consider your purchases and only buy what you know your collecting suggests. In my case Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter on 4k due it later in the month. I collect Hammer, I have Amazon vouchers so I’ll buy it. Great video by the way.
Many films were shot and presented in 2k at theatres. 4k is therefore a better upscale of 2k. If you have a good upscaler then blurays can lok very very good.
Are you on about post 35mm? Certainly from the late 2000s to late 2010s they were shot at 2k. Also an upscale cannot add detail that wasn't in the 2k in the first place. And yes. Making a 1080p blu ray from a 2k scan can look superb.
Personally i'm a edition kind of guy, I love a nice set with screen cards and posters and booklets all other kinds of goodies included with the movie. 4K or bluray not really picky if its a nice set, but thats where the real money gets spent. For me getting a movie can cost £60+ each. For example i'm still waiting for my terrifier art attack collection from umbrella i have on pre order that cost me £125. I wish i could pick up a standard copy of a movie, but i just cant.
I have a fair few ‘editions ‘ and used to love them. But feel they are becoming lazy. And now art cards and a poster doesn’t excite me. All that does within these is a book or booklet with text
Me - Probably not. I know it’s crazy. Stupid even. But then the other day someone was showing me a release with cards and a different art slip and I felt so Indifferent to it. Like no excitement for it on anything. .
@@stevebriffoutandabout5081 Once i watch the movie i like to read any books included with the set while i play the special features. I also hang most poster with frames in the movie room and also the gaming room. the cards are more just a nice extra. Personally id rather have shelves full on collectors sets and editions of the movies i really enjoy then shelves full of hundreds of random movies looking like a movie rentral shop
When it comes to 4K UHD, I'm more old school, that is, especially with the films that I saw as a child on VHS, and the nostalgia factor also plays a big role when the DVD came out. I was so excited about the possibilities back then Bonus material and more background knowledge of your favorite films I think that has been lost a bit over the years, not to mention never rewinding films again. When Blu-ray was introduced I was on board because of the slight improvement in picture quality but I noticed that the studios had put less love into it than they did with DVDs. For example there were fewer and fewer interactive menus and the bonus material got smaller depending on the title. I also didn't like the idea of having to keep updating your player for the Blu-ray to work properly. But the bottom line is that the Bluray is a solid format. 4K is simply not my format anymore, no matter how much more refined it is. I still watch tons of DVDs on my 55 inch 4K TV with soundbar, as well as the Blu-ray of my absolute favorite films, and I'm very happy with them. I just don't have the inspiration to do another update. Let's lay our cards on the table. Physical media has become a pure collector's market anyway due to the 4K format and it's only worthwhile for those who own the equipment and, of course, the money.
You are not wrong in what you say. Yeah a lot has been lost with the effort put into menu screens. The abyss I recall had that interactive menu screen that went into different rooms on the rig. Then some discs had the odd hidden Easter eggs to find.
One movie studio in the U S has announced it is to stop selling stand alone blu ray. So it's either the dvd or the 4k with blu ray. The culling has just begun.
Even comedies and films with very little cgi and effcets look better on 4k because 4k is using the original negatives of the movies which were used in the theatre presentation, so no matter what movie it is it is the closest way to seeing a movie in its original theatre presentation at home. Blurays dont use the original negative dvds dont do it either, the difference is also bigger if you know how to set up a tv set in the right way and how its meant to be seen.
Does it have to look ‘better’ ? How good do you want it. If There’s zero wrong with the Blu-ray transfers - it ‘looking better’ is a weak justification for a purchase
Using the original negatives. Really! Try that logic with planes trains and automobiles. Most 4ks are 1.5 or 2k. Upscale. To go back to the original negatives and do a fresh scan is very expensive. And most films produced in the 2000s were stored digitally at 2k. That's why star wars episode 1-3 look terrible on 4k.
@@stevebriffoutandabout5081 both of you guys' statements are misleading. If a 4K scan is something that matters to someone then it's best to just look up what the source of a new release is. Bluray and 4K included, some are sourced from 4K scans of the OCN, some from 4K scans of other film elements because the OCN wasn't available, some from 2K DIs, etc.
A 2k di of a 4k scan is still an upscale when it is made into a 4k release. At least the boutique labels are more fortcoming about what they are using. Most of them are between 80 and 85gb. Not the 50 to 57 gb of the main movie studios. Someone, somewhere is doing 4k correctly. If the only thing available is a 2k di then don't put out a 4k from it.@Chrisratata
I dont think its a mistake, I do think it is expensive though, I am happy with Blu-ray, I am happy with a HD presentation of 1080p, 4K has its place I have a few of my top favourite films in 4k but I only get it if it is at a decent price. But it can be overwhelming though and the collection can own you and your wallet.
I try to buy 4k's but only with titles that I want to see on that higher resolution. I find older movies are great for 4k. I still buy blu rays and dvds for my world cinema addiction. I don't agree with the increase in price for 4ks but most of my world cinema movies are that pricey which I prefer to buy. I feel with 4ks you can't stop because older titles do look amazing, you just need to choose what titles are best for you. I made that mistake with terminator 2 on 4k. I agree with you I also got Chrismas vacation movies and felt it was improved with quality but not with rewatchablity but I will now watch the 4ks over the blus
Yeah I have the 2 vacation films on 4K. And the Blu-ray box set of all 4. And my watches are of the 4K on the 2 that got that treatment. But that’s because I have them. If I sold them on and went back to the Blu-ray. Doubt I’d miss them.
And now with these new remasters all they're doing is over saturating the picture to make the image pop. Take a look at the new SILENT NIGHT, DEADLY NIGHT release as an example. These movies look better now than they did in the theater but were they meant to look this good?
I am not a big movie collector, l only get my real favourite movies, have around 60 movies and that l feel is more than enough to repeat view over the years, too many more and l would probably not get to watch them. Have 20 4K movies and rest are Bluray movies. Sound quality of a movie plays a big part for me in my purchase, if it sounds good in Surround sound with good Bass effects then l enjoy the movie even more.
I appreciate you may not have watched the entire video. It not as simple as just me talking about the difference in quality. Anyway who assumed that missed the point of the video
I own 1500 Blu-rays and 400 4K’s. Did I make a mistake going to 4K, maybe, but Ive made a lot of worse mistakes in my 73 years. I love Atmos and only a few blurays have it.
noo the mistake is buying multiple copies of the same film just for the "artwork" when it comes to upgrading i only really do it for films i know i like. and or if there is an audio upgrade good video
You aren’t wrong. And that’s something I myself am working on stopping. 2 x steels for Deadpool wolverine. I actually recently sold one as felt a tad stupid
The problem with Blu-ray vs 4K UHD Blu-ray comparisons is we are watching blu-rays on 4K TVs through 4K Blu-ray players that will upscale standard blu-rays. If you don't see much of a difference then play a standard blu-ray on a 1080p TV on a standard blu-ray player. It was just like VHS on a tube TV to DVD we started getting the flat screen versions of the CRT TVs to HDMI flat screens with blu-rays. Also with your thought process with the sound, should be the same for almost everyone. My friend only had a 13" TV and we would all laugh at how small the TV was, but when that movie started, we were all enthralled with the movie not on the size of the TV.
@@ajsmovieplace Because many want the best and 90$ of the time the 4K version is the best. Also it seems that 4K blu-rays go on sale quicker than the blu-ray counterparts.
@@stevebriffoutandabout5081 Twice as much? Maybe where you live. Where I live in Canada (which is equally as expensive as Australia) 4K Blu-ray to Blu-ray is a $5 difference on standard packaging and most 4K blu-rays also get the standard blu-ray where the standard blu-ray gets a DVD. So you should see that $5 difference is warranted.
SACD should have become the standard successor to cds. However continued to market players & discs as a super premium priced product & then streaming became mainstream format. Like SACD even on a small production run 4K discs can't cost more than 50p each more to manufacture .They shouldn't cost more than £5 over blu ray as development costs long since paid for.
I just find collecting the types of movies I enjoy (80-90s) don't really need anything better than Blu Ray. A new movie in glorious 4k is cool and all but means nothing to me if it's a crap movie that I'm never going to watch again.
Most times 4k allowed us the chance to obtain a steelbook for a cracking film that we missed out on blu ray. I know we were conned but look the original poster artwork on the 4k for star wars and back to the futures and Indiana jones....😊😊 Most 4k is just ok but hey we love it don't we?😅❤
The initial steels for Indy offered pretty rubbish artwork. We were then offered of a release with the decent poster art. Didn’t use it initially to get more sales 2nd time around 😂
I have a 4k TV, but not a 4k player. I've just finished rewatching 1883 & 1923 on blu ray & to me they looked stunning. For me to invest in 4k movies & series, I would only buy ones that I loved, & the transfer was good, Alien being an example. To me they are overpriced. I can get more out of blu ray at the moment, I can also get more of them if I want them. Also special editions are very hit & miss, I can live without them to be honest. I must admit the most recent purchase I made of the Alien Romulus steelbook you premiered in a previous video blew me away. I treated myself to that, & to put the blu ray disc in that steelbook was great. It's not going to be a regular occurrence & I was tempted to order another one for another film but thought, no, that's all for now. It's each to their own as far as collecting goes I guess. It's a great hobby collecting physical media, I just keep it to certain rules at the moment. I'll upgrade from DVD to Blu ray all day long, but 4k, I'm in no rush, cheers 👍.
@@GizParsonsI totally agree, I find my 55” Sony which is 7 years old and calibrated offers stunning blu-ray visuals - from a Sony player that’s 15 years old, yea 4K is fine but most of the time I’d be hard pressed to say its leaps and bounds beyond what bluray offers, on paper it may do, but for everyday viewing its marginal.
Sound certainly makes the experience more immersive but not everyone has the room for a complete system but the Atmos enabled soundbars do go some way to improve things
But then have you purchased the movie for it's excellent story telling or for the sound. No amount of Dolby Atmos would make me purchase super hero movies.
@@ajsmovieplace If the film is good I would search out for the best sounding mix if available, yes. If you're investing in the best picture quality then the best sound is important to those that have the capability of using it
I jumped on 4k around 6-7 years ago and swiftly realised it was not worthwhile for me. The jump in PQ in comparison to previously VHS-DVD and DVD-BLU-RAY is nowhere near as significant, and in my humble opinion, Blu-ray upscaled on a good 4k player played on a OLED TV looks outstanding and makes me more than content. £24.99 for a standard 4K release for me personally is lunacy to pay when I can get the same title for 40% less at least on the Blu-ray format, and I'll enjoy the content all the same. I've come to realise in the last few weeks that a lot of things I've bought to make me feel good and have swiftly realised my mistakes and have changed my habits significantly and am selling vast amounts of Physical media and action figures. This realisation has come from me being very happy with a big career move I made last month and me not feeling stressed physically and mentally anymore. These discussions are very insightful, and I'd say would make a good community livestream topic to get a few guests on for. I think a alot of people have been in a similar mindset or will head that way.
Hi Dan. Hope your well. Thanks for commenting. So a Big Career move. Away from the company you was in I hope ? Even back when I was working for them I was always happy to see people move on. So I am happy for you. And if you did want to do a live focussing on this. Always happy to join 👍
Nice!! What a great time to start. So many deals and items you’ll Be able to get. You’ll be able to build a collection at a fraction of a cost of the people Like me. Good luck with it
I’ve been at this a bit now… 4K honestly only makes sense for newer movies. If you really want to see a difference, it’s partly because of these new 4.5k cameras they use. You get all the detail. Furiosa is a good example, maybe not the best movie but it looks stunning in 4K. Almost everything that is older, the 4k is marginally noticeable. For those, save your money as the bluray is more than sufficient. The real debate is dvd vs bluray. The main reason you want the bluray over DVDis because of the sound. Yes the picture is really good but if you have a home theatre, the bluray is a MUST at a minimum for the sound.
👍👍👍 me personally. I’m not a big sound guy. I have a soundbar and that’s enough. Years ago I did have a surround sound system but did away with it. 🤷🏻♂️ The only film I rewatch that makes think about a sound system is Blade Runner 2049. …. But no. It’s an expense I’d rather be without. Furiousa does indeed look pretty sweet. Wasn’t sure about the film on first watch. But it certainly grew on me and love it now.
Ultimately I think people need to decide for themselves after seeing a variety of comparisons. Some can't tell much difference yet people like me quite clearly can for a very large majority of movies.
Now back in the real world. There are quite a lot of good movies that will never make it to bluray in the uk. And ac3 5.1 and dts 5.1 still rock, plus dvds are cheaper. Check out the dts track on Das Boot. Outstanding.
I'm going to be seriously more selective this year , and I'll be going to the dark side ( streaming) for titles on offer. Example, the gift is out today for £3.99 dolby vision, good film but I don't need it on physical. On the other hand constantine is only £3.99 and will get dolby vision and atmos free upgrade, but this is a day 1 pick up on uhd so I will pay the extra ( begrudgingly) I can't see myself buying over 10 4k discs this year, however due to the ridiculous prices I will be buying more digital films at the right price. I'm fully aware you don't actually own the digi , and the audio isn't quite as good as the disc but sitting in my home theater freezing my stones of thinking yay I got the disc or watching it on apple is beyond crazy. Cost of living is real, physical is becoming such a luxury purchase.
Cost of living is indeed a real problem for all. Prices are becoming stupid in everyday goods and there is no slowing. Selective is the way forward. But I don’t know that I could turn to steaming. But 5 years ago I said I wouldn’t go 4K. A year ago I wouldn’t have seen myself Saying what I am today. Life has away of causing change so ….. you never know. The dark side may be looming in the shadows. One day you may say my journey is complete
@ajsmovieplace It's certainly not through choice my friend, but I promised myself to curb my ways after all the titles that came through in December and I will stick with my decision. The guilt when the postman was coming every other day with films for £40 + EACH and me and my wife sitting with big wooly hoodies on to keep warm. No more for me. I'll be watching the gift tonight in dolby vision and £3.99 to buy digital is an easy decision to enjoy it. I've already booked a wee holiday in may with the money I'm going to be saving for myself, wife and 2 dogs 😆. Making memories. I've enjoyed your videos mate and really just confirming that I'm at a stage where I don't need everything twice. 👍
I'm just as happy watching an upscaled dvd as a blu-ray so maybe I'm not the guy to ask. So I'll just leave you with this phrase. The law of diminishing returns.
What about the amount of Boutique labels out there is that sustainable? I have hardly any tv on physical media more into movies. Unlike some ppl i have stopped buying VHS Films, nearly 10 years ago, i do not get atall the so called revival of VHS ! I saw last starfighter at the cinema, but i do not own it, do not really see it as an adulkt film. interesting video .
I’m sure some boutique labels will flounder given time. I don’t get the VHS revival either. I mean - each to their own. Must be nostalgia driven I suppose. But no chance. I have a couple of vhs tapes for nostalgic purposes. That’s it. But can count on 1 hand how many.
I couldn't give a monkey's about 4k, as blu rays and dvds look fine to me. I don't need the perfect picture to enjoy a film. Some stuff that gets released on 4k is crazy, Friends, Seinfeld, why on earth would you need to watch those in 4k. As for digitally buying films, no chance. Take care mate 👍 PS. Sorry I missed the live on Saturday, the wife had me chained to the radiator 😅
There's a £5 difference between dvd and Blu ray. Maybe if 4k blu ray was only £5 dearer than blu ray then it could be justified buying them. I have 900+ dvds, about 25 blu rays and 3 4ks. No steelbooks and no collectors editions. Dvd is still the most popular format. About 60/22/18% split. Now I only buy films I know i'll watch more than 5 times in my life. I rent from cinema paradiso before i buy.
I have about 20 4K titles without a 4K player. 😂 Sounds rather crazy, but I will probably get a 4K Sony player in March. I've been very picky about what I consider worthy for buying on 4K. Avoiding the obvious issues like Aliens and The Terminator etc. You have to be selective and use thought to navigate the mirrad of titles. I've been conservative with what titles I want. My wife and daughters don't understand collecting physical movies and TV. They have friends who watch everything via streaming. All the people where I work watch streaming. You really are a minority amongst the hordes.
Not at all. I had a few 4Ks actually prior to getting the tv and player. But was bought because I preferred the art available on the packaging 🤦🏻 I never consider those as my first 4K pickups as they weren’t bought for the 4K reason
I haven't watched Aliens yet but The Terminator on 4k looks absolutely brilliant. And I did the same thing, stacking 4ks when ever they got on sale knowing one day I'd have a 4k player and a 4k TV
Collecting 4K‘s is not a mistake you’re actually future proofing yourself for when you have bigger and better TVs that can take more advantage of it. Now I don’t know what kind of TV you got but believe me if you have the right set up and your TV is capable of displaying Dolby vision. There is a big difference between a 1080 P Blu-ray and a 4K Blu-ray. My advice to you as a beginner collector is that you buy only the movies you like don’t collect movies just to have them.
@@ajsmovieplace yes the advice is for you and anybody that is a beginner collector. My advice for any one that doesn’t collect any movies, is that you should buy your favorite hundred movies and you’ll realize how seldom are you use streaming services. It will save you a lot of money over the years.
I'd glady have my money back on at least 90% of the 4k's I have bought. These 'The 4k is superior' youtube reviews is a total scam.. Take Jaws and Alien! Considered some of the best 4k's out there yet they look no different to the 1080p version? Absolutely zero upgrade in resolution.
I buy mostly boutique label titles. Obscure grindhouse films, esoteric foreign films, pre CGI productions. What grinds my gears is when a label does a 4K scan of such films but only offers it on blu ray at first knowing full well they'll be releasing it on 4K in six months or a year later. They do this in hopes that people/collectors will buy the blu ray as soon as they make it available and then purchase the 4K as a further upgrade when it's released later. A real insult to those, like myself, who are the bread and butter customers to their label and business.
How is that lazy? Us 4K fans want as many movies on 4K as possible, hence any given month from a label tends to be a mix of back-catalogue upgrades and new releases.
Raymoorey, do you buy mostly 4K for the new purchases or do you still buy Blu-rays?
I can only dream of having 3000 Blu-rays.
@happydogg312 I only buy Blu rays, believe or not there's not a great difference between the both, infact some blu rays have a better transfer than 4K. Good luck in building your collection, i enjoy the hunt finding films that are OOP that's all part of thr fun.
I was sure beta was going to win!
You are definitely not alone. I don't consider our dives to be errors but a learning experience. Now we're not just blind buying 4k movies, just buying the ones that are worth it to us.
Great topic. Thank you
And thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Always appreciated 👌
I agree with you fella,
I'm buying less physical media simply because there are fewer films being made that I enjoy enough to warrant buying.
As for 4K vs. Blu-ray, I always go for the 4K version that also has the Blu-ray version with it. If it is 4K only then I keep my old Blu-ray version as well.
Never bought Steelbooks as I thought they were a cash grab for the sake of some bling.
You are right. Films now compared to prior are a lot worse. Lazily made. Badly written.
I’m certainly going to make ‘better’ decisions
I think the only steelbook that tempted me was Don't look now. Gorgeous steelbook, Didn't buy it though.
@@ajsmovieplacecause Oppenheimer, Dune, Fury Road are all lazy
@csdarlington86He said "fewer" that he enjoys, not none.
No it doesn’t. You are correct 👍
One of the issues is that all movies are initially converted into 2k masters for cinema release, hence a substantial amount of 4k discs are upscaled from these 2k versions. Not many films are shot in 4k or higher and then mastered into a 4k releases.
👌👌👌
Yeah I can see me going the same way.
Makes sense
I now only buy 4Ks if i really really like the movie. Especially for animations. Animations seem to "pop" in 4K. However, I am perfectly fine with the Blu-ray in most cases.
I think the same
Best way to do it. Pick and choose. And I agree in most cases. Blu-ray is good enough for me too
👌👌
I must admit to super Mario brothers being a guilty pleasure of mine, due to the hdr and all those colours. Lol.
Even though i mostly buy 4K now i struggle to tell a difference between the 4K disc and blu ray
Depends on the disc and your setup because it’s night and day sometimes, mostly.

Sometimes I regret getting into 4K myself. But sometimes you can only get the movie in 4K on some releases which is irritating
It’s about being selective isn’t it.
For me I think I should get 4K when I feel needed and Blu-ray when not.
But it’s the steelbook thing I would need to get past for that
I have zero regrets. Love my collection. It brings me great joy
Yeah it’s certain films that 4K
Benefits. Like what you mention other films. Have to question why they have a 4K at all
Thanks for making this video.
And I honestly think it was more solely because of the steelbook ( as an afterthought this is )
Seriously.
You Sir are 100% correct
Totally.
@@bal5884yes he is
@@ajsmovieplace Modern Life is apps and subscriptions and I can't stand it mate
@ it’s awful isn’t it
Shame you don’t upgrade to a surround sound setup!!
👍 makes perfect sense.
I’ve found that on a few myself.
That is very true
This was a great video. Been really enjoying the output on the channel, just shouted you out in my latest video. Its great seeing other's look at collecting from a different light and pull away from the fomo aspect and the constant need to upgrade.
👍👍👍. As you know. I’ve sought out your channel and subbed
Yes I buy the movie I want in my collection not every movie just bcuz it’s in 4k. You are absolutely correct. And I primarily buy second hand but it all adds up but it’s cheaper than retail. I like packaging but what is really important is just the movie cheers
Totally. It’s the film. Be selective. Be clever. Not all films need 4K
HDR is not always that great it makes movies look too dark with washed out colours compared to SDR 1080p Blu-rays
Paragraph breaks would help out a lot
Great conversation👍🏾 thank you for telling us your truth , me, myself, am all about DVDs and Blue rays. Don't get me wrong, I've been tempted to go down that 4K rabbit hole for a long time now, but the movies are getting more expensive, and some of the transfers are looking too much like AI Creepy!😅 A lot of 4K guys hate on Blu-ray, guys, but thank you for keeping it real👊🏽❤️🇨🇦🔥
Thank you for watching and commenting.
We all
Collect what we collect.
Great video, AJ! It would be an interesting video if you did a What If
I’ll give it some thought and sleep on it 😂 I do my best thinking asleep 😴
I collect DVD, bluray and 4K. There are some 4Ks in my collection that are absolutely stunning. For example, MAD MAX 2, THE SHINING, FURIOSA, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE FALLOUT and JAWS 2. I buy 4K selectively and I will go for the bluray if I'm not expecting to see a huge difference. If a film was made using IMAX (or similar) camera then I will always get the 4K. TOP GUN MAVERICK is absolutely stunning in 4K as are parts of the Christopher Nolan Batman films.
Interesting you should say Jaws 2.
I havnt yet checked my one out. So now curious to out on ( after all Jaws is my Fav of all time
@@ajsmovieplace I thought it looked fantastic. I also thought the four original Superman films looked great on 4K. I think most people think the fourth film has the best picture quality, and I tend to agree, but they all look really good.
@ 👌👌👌. I’ll put it in soon and give my thought on one of my upcoming ‘what have I been watching ‘ vids
Good sound means diddles squat if the movie is not worth bothering with.
At somepoint someone at Shout Factory decided, "nope, no more importing new obscure titles. We are releasing all of our archive titles on 4K." That's when I decided to abandon ship. Blu-ray is good enough for me. 4K is a sheer and blatant price gouging.
Really. That’s bad. I wasn’t aware of that.
I’m
Not a sound person. So the whole Dolby Atmos isn’t a selling point for me. I thought enhanced picture was. But I’m not so sure now. I think for me it’s about being more picky
Do you find you are more inclined to pick a 4k to watch on a given night and maybe skipping a movie that you might enjoy more?
Best 4ks are the ones they do from VistorVision. North by Northwest, Ten Commandments, white Christmas.
Being more selective is the way forward
Some movies definitely deserve a 4K release and an upgrade, especially if the dvd/blu ray isn’t the best transfer.
However FAR too many movies nowadays get a 4K and it really leaves you scratching your head asking, ‘who asked for this?’ 😂
I’m glad I’m not a huge collector AJ, because you’re right, a lot of it unfortunately is a waste of money
Would you upgrade to ( if there was ) a next format. Say 8K became a thing or the like. Or would you stick
@@ajsmovieplaceAny new format that comes out would need both a new tv and player.
Where do we draw the line?
I love classic movies and tv shows and I’ve upgraded two shows from from dvd to blu ray (smileys people & Night Gallery) that said, once I buy something, I almost never upgrade unless there are amazing extras or something like that. Getting into 4K soon, but I’m not sure how many I will buy as I have most of the films I want to watch already.
That’s great.
I’ve actually pre ordered the Blu-ray upgrade of Gerry Anderson Space Precinct.
I never usually bother if it's a new film as its most are filmed in the 4K. Blurays are nearly half the price. Older films, though, look amazing. Think the first 4k i ever bought was My Fair Lady, and the look blew me away. I dont bother with digital either
Digital is pointless ( IMO ). I would never have guessed my fair lady as anyone’s first 4K 😂👍. Was it a first time watch ?
Not sure I'd be not bothering with digital. Digital will still be here long after blu ray and 4k are gone.
Hey mate, this brings back memories.I started with a beta max, vhs, dvd, and blu ray ,but I've not dipped my toes into 4k . I'm over the upgrading and stopped at
Blu ray.I never bought any Digital stuff and never will.My first blu ray player was the Playstation 3 lol.
The good old PS3 👌
I said I wasn’t going to go into 4K. Alas I did 🤦🏻 🤷🏻♂️.
I don’t think that in itself was an issue. It was all that came after 😂
I switched from standard releases to steelbooks but the expense is obviously more i bought a lot of better bluray steels and put the 4k movie in them but cost and space is becoming an issue so this year i have a goal of 6 titles max.
It is a waste of money at the end of the day. I totally agree.
8k and 16K will be digital only though. You won't actually own your content at that point, in those resolutions.
If it gets people thinking and questioning. That’s a good thing.
I admire how you collect. I do. It makes sense amongst the madness
👍. “collecting for the sake of collecting “. I like that. Hits the nail on the head.
See I wouldn’t get that with digital. When I go away I don’t even put a tv on or anything.
@ yeah that’s not a bad idea. Space is a big issue - that’s something that , if it hasn’t yet , will impact us all who collect.
What system are you watching your 4k discs on? So many people watch on a 65” tv and wonder why they can’t see much difference to Blu-ray…..
Apologies.
Not sure if you watched the entirety of my thoughts ( I wouldn’t blame anyone who didn’t I know how it works. )
But asking that question would signify you didn’t and / or completely missed the point of the discussion.
Sound like you’ve found a good balance / strategy. Which is what I need to work on for sure
Given your extensive collection it would be well worth investing in a basic sound surround set up.
IE A Dennon AVR, (£500)
Two pairs of Dali Oberon 1 speakers(£800 rrp) +a small Rel sub (Zero rrp 450 sometimes on offer at 350)
It would really enhance your whole viewing experience
Not a bad price.
If I do consider it it will be 6 months down the line.
Just simply because I don’t want to break away from my target of saving and not spending. I want to make that more of a habitual thing before any big buys
@@ajsmovieplace Yes as I typed I heard the rest of your vlog explaining that.
We have to preplan & prioritise bigger purchases too.
We'd like a new TV. & "definitely need a new Sofa
The TV we are watching is a fairly budget 40" we bought at a rental property back in 2016.
Forgot to mention our centre speaker was an end of line from Richer Sounds last January for £49
@andrewbrazier9664 yeah this is true.
I do appreciate we all have varying degree of income and what we can spend.
I am ( currently ) in. Fortunate enough position that I could pretty much pick up all I was tempted by. And this is on top of mine and the wife’s joint savings and holiday savings.
But I now feel
Foolish for spending the money I have on this stuff. I feel really Stupid.
If I could go back and give my 16 year old self a reality slap I would.
But I suppose better late than never.
I am now asking if my buying has been driven by poor mental health ( and have a video planned on that )
@andrewbrazier9664 superb price 👌
Its not needed in most cases , i buy the films a really want on 4k as a upgrade . But 9 times out of 10 the blu ray is good enough
That’s not a bad way of doing it.
Great idea.
I’m now going to be far more picky with how I collect and what 4Ks I upgrade and pick up.
I do upgrade to 4k but its very minimal. Im very selective on what i do upgrade. Got to be favourites, older movies and if i feel like the bluray wasnt good enough( usually the first blurays that came out )
Im still totally happy with bluray pq. I also just bought a new sony tv and the upscaling is fantastic.
Yeah it’s best to be selective. And I think that’s been my issue. I havnt been
tnx for the insight mate, yes I have been collecting but I'm collecting both blu ray and 4k, I c wat people say about the transfers and make my decision, it's the action and horror I like in 4k for the deeper blacks.. for example wen most reviewers saud the film Heat was too dark in 4k I just picked up the blu ray version...
Picking and choosing is the best way 👌
So many questions, no conclusions!
Exactly. As I’m questioning it myself daily - but the scales are teetering in one direction
The cost is huge in difference. And I have the money to support collecting. But I just feel now that moneys wasted if I’m honest.
( my video this coming Saturday delves a bit more into that. ) ☝️.
I’m
Just working through changes I’m having with how I perceive collecting after nigh on 40 years of doing it.
@ajsmovieplace After 40 years. Are we quaders just jaded or do with have other things and priorities to spend our money on?
@@ajsmovieplace I will look forward to your video, as always, especially as I may *want* to keep getting 'the best' (despite some serios 'rip off CE sets that don't get a 'basic' release... well at least not for ages) but I'm facing an uncertain financial future due to ill health so really have to examine where my priorities lie... there may be a lot fewer haul videos in my future by necessity and I'd rather be fully in control and know my priorities _before_ that day (potentially) arrives.
@ I’m sorry to hear that.
Wishing you the best ❤️
It's very important before collecting 4ks to research. Not all 4k players and tvs support HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. Even some 4k discs are just SDR. The resolution upgrade is minimal. However, dolby visions and HDR10 is where the differences are found.
All that said i do agree that not everything needs to be upgraded. And i personally dont lile the steelbook gimmick. Its pricing is beyond reasonable
Steelbooks have become an expense for sure
I only but 4k discs if they come with the bluray. If it’s a choice, like with Arrow Video, I always buy the bluray.
Don’t arrow now do 4K only on some stuff. I maybe mistaken
Makes sense.
If I had been more honest with myself when I culled my collection. A lot more would likely have gone.
Yeah I’ve heard those kill bills are possibly not great. I already made a decision about them before even hearing that. ( in my vid this Saturday )
Thanks Kindly.
Yeah I think it’s about picking and choosing now. Like you say. Not everything requires it.
Would a drama or rom com really need a 4K ?
Even with the right set ups people have problems with 4k dics playing. So for that reason I'm not sure if it's worth it
It’s a fine line and obviously an opinion or decision suited to the individual. A year ago I would have said yes. Now I don’t think it is worth it
Many films were shot and presented in 2k at theatres.
👍👍👍
How many times will you look at those cards and posters? When you re-watch a movie will you also do the same with the extra stuff?
@ Stupid? I dont buy the same movie if i already have it. Stupid is buying a movie you already own.
@@ajsmovieplace or you can let people decide for themselves what factors make for the most enjoyable experience for them
A 2k di of a 4k scan is still an upscale when it is made into a 4k release.
I focus on Blurays but if its a film I really like or want to support like Oppenheimer ill buy the 4K. I only have about 10 4K and about 90 Blurays .
👌👌👌.
Was it a mistake for me ? At the time no. I still don’t think so but my views are shifting.
Give it a year and the answer may be. Yes it was a mistake
I don't get many 4ks but I only pick ones up that I've heard will benefit the watching experience. Unless you have given it to me lol 😊

You’re absolutely correct. There weren’t made to look that good. In some cases - looking to good shows the cheapness of the film
I suspect that most cinemas back in the day were poor quality and no film looked good.
also streaming and digital has so much compression its not at all the same quality as with physical media.
No. It can look horrid at times for sure
Pick and choose your 4k titles 😉
Agreed. Certainly not the jump in quality we had from dvd to bluray!
Indeed.
Yep.
Definatly the amount of films I have is Way OTT. One day I may whittle it down to a smaller collection
4k movies visuals and audio are usually a great jump in quality. It's night and day. It has to be the set up or you just want to save money.

So if upscaling is that good. Why are we buying 4K discs ?
@@ajsmovieplace Because many want the best and 90$ of the time the 4K version is the best. Also it seems that 4K blu-rays go on sale quicker than the blu-ray counterparts.
I buy most of my 4K blu-rays for $1CAD from my local Amazon return store.
@@randybradley4151But is the best worth paying twice as much for?
@@stevebriffoutandabout5081 Twice as much? Maybe where you live. Where I live in Canada (which is equally as expensive as Australia) 4K Blu-ray to Blu-ray is a $5 difference on standard packaging and most 4K blu-rays also get the standard blu-ray where the standard blu-ray gets a DVD. So you should see that $5 difference is warranted.
SACD should have become the standard successor to cds.
However continued to market players & discs as a super premium priced product & then streaming became mainstream format.
Like SACD even on a small production run 4K discs can't cost more than 50p each more to manufacture
.They shouldn't cost more than £5 over blu ray as development costs long since paid for.

I just find collecting the types of movies I enjoy (80-90s) don't really need anything better than Blu Ray. A new movie in glorious 4k is cool and all but means nothing to me if it's a crap movie that I'm never going to watch again.
Very true
But isn't that the case with dvd and blu ray as well. Crap is crap no matter what format it's on.
Yes and no. I feel the same way sometimes.
I’m sure that scale will weigh heavier on one side given time
Most times 4k allowed us the chance to obtain a steelbook for a cracking film that we missed out on blu ray.
I know we were conned but look the original poster artwork on the 4k for star wars and back to the futures and Indiana jones....😊😊
Most 4k is just ok but hey we love it don't we?😅❤
The initial steels for Indy offered pretty rubbish artwork.

They do this in hopes that people/collectors will buy the blu ray as soon as they make it available and then purchase the 4K as a further upgrade when it's released later.
