I've had a few suspected mini-strokes and am vegan. This helped me see that salt could very well be a culprit. Appreciate such a simple and likely contributor. The doctors were for giving me a host of things and didn't mention salt.
Cheese, cheese, cheese. Many vegetarians eat a lot of cheese which is high in fat and salt. Substitute a ham sandwich with a cheese sandwich. Vegetarian recipes were often very cheesy. Years back if you were vegetarian in the UK you would be offered a cheese omelette or vegetable lasagna, topped with cheese.
As I understand it, eating vegan doesn't mean anything in itself. It all depends on what you eat. With processed foods that are high in salt and sugar, the risk of stroke is the same as with meat eaters. On the other hand, vegans who eat whole plants with no added sugar, little or no added salt and lots of fiber have a very low risk of stroke.
I eat vegan often, but will eat fish on occasion. I know not to chow down on cheese and eggs. There has been no salt, sugar, flour, or butter in my house this century. Vegan plus occasional fish is a traditional Lent. (I'm not religious, but find religious diets from all over the world fascinating. I find that their wisdom is often confirmed.)
I was surprised at you did not get into the fact that many vegetarians have lower cholesterol levels, in fact significantly lower levels, than meat eaters. And some studies have shown that very low cholesterol levels can increase the risk of hemorrhagic stroke.
Nice red herring you throw out there. Those "dangerously low" cholesterol levels can only be achieved with medications like statins. No need for meds on a whole food plant based diet, which gives you optimal cholesterol levels.
Well the vegetarians have a dietary intake of cholesterol and had higher rates of stroke than the vegans. But still, dietary intake cannot necessarily offset low cholesterol if your liver and intestines are not producing enough. That's why it's important to eat healthy fats from plant-based sources, and keep a healthy gut.
12:10 all people say they don't add salt but unfortunately they're not including the salt content of many foods, and they don't look at the stock cubes which are really salt cubes. More sodium in bread than a packet of crisps. So that's where the focus needs to be. A video dedicated just to salt and where it's hidden in food and why..... because it's a cheap flavour enhancer.... manufacturers can literally chuck it into food by the tonne and it doesn't effect the bottom line.
"and they don't look at the stock cubes which are really salt cubes. More sodium in bread than a packet of crisps." Exactly. People gloss over high amounts of salt in their diet because of this. Cheese is one people don't think about either.
The vegetarians I know eat anything and everything except meat because they are humanitarian’s. But Cheese, candy, and sodas are part of their everyday diets.
Dr. Gregor - have you looked at the results from the 90+ Study from UCI? Anything we can learn from it? 60 minutes had a segment on it, but glossed over the nutritional aspect claiming "diet doesn't matter"
I have been a vegetarian since birth (due to my religion and ancestry) but use milk in tea, oils .I have some problems like thyroid while I see in while my husband is a diabetic by genetics, and I have seen my mother and mother in law have cancer surgeries after a certain postmenopausal age! Now this virus I have seen is diet independent, it has no relation to diet, I have seen vegetarians(don't know vegan, but you can call us mostly vegan as we don't drink that much milk, don't eat eggs, cheese(home made) is almost rare a delicacy, this virus has infected anybody, and it's just the strength of the respiratory system that is counting! I had bad Flu pneumonia in March as I didn't had flujab, my lungs were vulnerable and I overdid breezers in coldest weather! I have also seen hardcore carnivores falling prey to virus sane way as vegetarians because they were careless in wearing masks and thought it couldn't happen to us ! No doubt the recovery rate in my origin country is much higher than other countries, it could be because of No flesh diet (rice or wheat eaters) home cooking, climate as in extreme availability of sunlight and social distancing with masks!
Refined carbs and sugars are not good, but only carnivore is proven to be carcinogenic. Best to stay away from carnivore and use a whole food plant based diet instead.
@@robertusga Indians (most) have been vegetarians for centuries. But they also consume milk(liquid meat) and it's products as a norm( even in ayurvedic medicine). Maybe they discovered the body works well on a vegetarian diet with a little milk/meat-like nutrition(many people are currently allergic to Caesin and Lactose in milk). Also should look into ayurvedic advice of eating dinner before sunset and minimal portions of food at that time. May be they were onto low-calorie diet( they had butter and clarified butter) and time- restricted eating.
@@nowpresent2167 there are good things in Ayurveda medicine. Clarified butter not being one of them. Delicious but deadly. Lots of heart disease in the vegetarian Indian population. Unlike blue zones where dairy is excluded.

Salt, also sea salt, has 60% chloride and 40% sodium. Chloride = chloride. Sodium = sodium. The 'extra' minerals in sea salt are in such low concentrations that it's not doing anything if you already consume enough minerals. If you want more potassium and less sodium in your diet and still use salt, buy potassium salt. (2/3 potassium, 1/3 sodium) That actually makes a big difference.
maybe its not even b12 and its just diet in general, would make alot more sense than humans needing meat for b12 when meat is cancer and we have a conscious (be it only a few of us, still capable)

Exactly!! Saying that you're vegan or vegetarian does not equate to being healthy!! I'll stick with my whole plant foods
Powerful message Dr G!

A lot of vegetarians eat eggs and dairy. Not the healthiest food.

The food industry controls the narrative.
Wow wow wow, thank you my dear doctor

B12 deficiency -> raised homocysteine -> heart issues and strokes
B12 deficiency isn't really a problem for vegans these days. Shouldn't be at least.

They need to look at salts... refined salts versus whole unrefined sea salt 🤔
Salt is salt to the body regardless of the name. The names are pure clever marketing.
