You can still bang a wedge with a splitter. The occasional use of the bit to free a pinched bar or chop a random limb, plant the axe in a stump or whatever... my personal preference is to have a fatter cheek and not get it stuck hard. In my opinion, the fatter profile is just more versatile, making the axe a better all around tool. Since you asked for everyone's 2 cents...
